William R. Newman and his sharp-shooter medal. He was born Feb.28, 1844 in Hendricks County, IN. He was an Iowa soldier from Linn County and enlisted in Company "A" of the Iowa Thirty-First Infantry Regiment when he was 18 years old on Aug.22, 1862. He mustered on Sept. 24,1862 and was discharged for disability on Jan. 19, 1863 in St. Louis, Mo. He was entitled to a pension of Thirty-two dollars per month which commenced on July 15, 1918. He died on Jan.29, 1926.
