Armstrong
Family Cemetery, contributed by Laura of Elmore, IL. Knox County, IL

To get to this cemetery if you are in Williamsfield, IL, head out north
on IL Sate Hwy 180, about two miles, just before the Caldwell Creek is a
cross roads. You turn East right on 1660N. You stay on that road and
follow it. when you see a curve it turns into 2325E. you will also see a
dead end sign follow that road straight east. just before you come to a
for Sale sign on a new house property and the curve in the road pull
over. You will see a mound, not so much a mound any longer as I cut most
of it down this afternoon, but it looks like a water way in the bean
field. That is where the cemetery is. If this is the Greep - Anderson
Cemetery then there should of been about 1/4 acre. It's about the same
place. And so named on account of the Eric Able & his wife Caroline J.
Greep conveyed a warrant to John A. Anderson of County of Knox except
for one fourth of an acre to be used as a cemetery. So, there should be
more people buried here.
Talked
the Farmer who farms the ground tonight Oct 01, 2008 eight pm and
he assured me he does not drive his equipment over the stones.
He's a very nice gentleman & will talk to the Woman who owns the ground
very soon. She has some problems right now;
have also found our some information on the
families who are buried there & will be posting later when it all gets
sorts out and comes together. anyone who is descended would truly love
to hear from you. I have Armstrong's in my line of descent and would
love to know if there is a connection I'm working on it I re-track what
I said earlier..
I went back today and cleaned up and around the stones
there are more bases than stones, scattered stones which seem to almost
be in pieces and such. I noted who was buried there and the condition of
the stones. This needs immediate attention and I'm trying my best.
September 30, 2008. Pictures took today will be on the next page.

This is a child's stone. It is
broken is many many pieces and I took several photos trying to read it.
I cleaned it the best I could with just plain water & soft brush. and
just added a little chalk to the bottom to read her epitaph. I felt so
sorry for the youngster buried here and her stone in such a mess I
wanted to get everything I could from it. What I got was C O or U
----- for her name rest of it is broken off and I couldn't find the
piece that went with it. next it reads part of that is missing too but
daughter of you can just see a D... then broke off then on the other
part strong meaning or my taking it to mean Armstrong. died Mar 25, 1862
Aged 15ms and 7ds. Just a little baby who is buried here once loved and
now long long forgotten about. shame......
the epitaph what I could decipher
was Sleep of dreams only take thy and that was all I could make out.
There was a footstone by it with the initials of C. I. A. on it I took
it as for hers. |

although the stone above is for a Civil War Veteran
who lost his life and the very young age of 18ys8ms 9ds the family saw
fit to place a stone among theirs in their family plot. Daniel was in Co
E 85 Regt. Ill Vol. & was buried near Bowling Green Kentucky. the bottom
of the stone is in three pieces. with a chip out of the top near his
first name. Daniel was the son of William & Lucy A. Armstrong & his
stone was found near what appears to be his mother's stone--- LUC above. |
