Kathy Mills, who lives right now in Texas, update--Kath now lives in North Carolina---  typed this up and emailed it to me via the net.   Thanks so Much Kathy!!! I really

appreciate all the time and trouble you've taken to help me out on my new venture on my Knox County, Illinois Web Site.

I have photos of all the tombstones in this cemetery and will be posting them here later or if you'd like a copy before hand email me just click on my doggie below.   If you know of anyone who is buried here or information that is not correct or would like to add to it  feel freed to

Have a Great Day!!!  & Happy Gene Hunting

You may click on Thumbnails for a bigger & better view.  These photos were taken one day last fall while Rachael, my dog, and I were out "cemetery hopping". This cemetery sits on a little hill north of the county road 2205, has some trees and grass roads through the cemetery.  It is still used today as a burial ground.

Center Prairie Cemetery is located in SW 1/4 of Section 25 north of Williamsfield on State Route 180 about 41?2 miles and then east 1/4 mile.  I have a new Platt Map of Knox County, Illinois, and it is marked on this platt map.  The numbered road you turn off on Rt. 180 heading north out of Williamsfield when you come to Knox Road 1950N you turn right/East and go a little ways and you'll see the cemetery.  On the west side of Route 180 there use to stand the Center Prairie Church.  There is now a Memorial Stone there to mark the place in which it stood.   There was a village here called Centerville.

December 18, 1893, James Thomas and Caroline Thomas, his wife of Lincoln County, and State of Nebraska deeded to the County of Knox, State of Illinois, a parcel of Land to be used for Cemetery purposes. Located on 2 acres off the West one-half of the North West one-half of Section 25 Township 12 North Range 4 East. Deed Recorded Book 145, page 450, Knox County Court House.

One of the things neglected here, as in all newly settled districts was an early setting apart of a Plot of ground for a Public Cemetery. The early settlers buried on their own premises: The TABORS buried on what is now the John SALINE’S Place; the STUARTS on the Stuart Place; the ARNOLDS on the Arnold Place; the CLIFFORDS on the Dr. Cravens Place, where old Bobby ARMSTRONG’S first wife, who was a CLIFFORD, is buried.

It was not until 1858 that the family of Jim Thomas, who owned the farm where the Center Prairie Cemetery is located, lost several children with diphtheria and buried them there and when he sold the place to Olof BOWMAN, he reserved the present plot for a burial ground and later at the suggestion of William MESSMORE, deeded it to Knox County for a Public Cemetery.
