December 18, 1893, James Thomas and
Caroline Thomas, his wife of Lincoln County, and State of Nebraska deeded
to the County of Knox, State of Illinois, a parcel of Land to be used for
Cemetery purposes. Located on 2 acres off the West one-half of the North
West one-half of Section 25 Township 12 North Range 4 East. Deed Recorded
Book 145, page 450, Knox County Court House.
One of the things neglected here, as in all newly settled districts was an
early setting apart of a Plot of ground for a Public Cemetery. The early
settlers buried on their own premises: The TABORS buried on what is now
the John SALINES Place; the STUARTS on the Stuart Place; the ARNOLDS on
the Arnold Place; the CLIFFORDS on the Dr. Cravens Place, where old Bobby
ARMSTRONGS first wife, who was a CLIFFORD, is buried.
It was not until 1858 that the family of Jim Thomas, who owned the farm
where the Center Prairie Cemetery is located, lost several children with
diphtheria and buried them there and when he sold the place to Olof
BOWMAN, he reserved the present plot for a burial ground and later at the
suggestion of William MESSMORE, deeded it to Knox County for a Public
Cemetery.
Taken from : Annal of Knox County Commemorating the Centennial of
Admission of Illinois as a State of the Union 1818.
