Rio Baptist Cemetery
Front side of the photo below. Got me a better photo... tah tah..
Close up of the back side of the photo above...
It is located in the northwest section of section 28, Rio Township--13 - N Range I - E
The cemetery is located off of Illinois State Route #150 heading north out of Galesburg, Illinois towards Woodhull. Watch for Knox county road 2550N. It will come up after you pass the intersection or signs that go to Oneida and the Deatherage Cemetery, which is Knox County Rd #35. When you see Knox county Road 2550N turn left off the highway. This is a gravel road and well maintained. The cemetery is located past Lowell Carlson's house. You can't miss it and it sits up a little off the road. The first Child born in Knox County is buried in this cemetery on the left or easterly side of the cemetery. I need to retake the photo of tombstone as it is not coming out very well. Have taken this photo several times but will try again.
There are also triplets buried in this cemetery which back in the early 1800's would of been something. Their tombstone also did not come out and will have to retake. Thanks for your patience. This cemetery here holds history of the founders of Knox County, IL.
If you have any information, new, old, photos, corrections, updates, whatever feel free to feed my doggie as he gets hungry too. Would love to hear from any and all who have persons buried in the cemetery or if you know where can obtain a photo of the Church that once stood here. Thanks Happy Hunting.....
This is the place where the original Baptist Church sat that Jacob Gum was the first minister of Knox county preached.. The Church was known as the Rio Baptist Church. The first Church of the County. The cemetery grew up around the church. The church was later in years abandoned. Then was moved to the corner of Route 150 and the North Henderson black top. It was made into a home and doesn't even resemble a church now. The photos I took a couple of years ago. I have found in doing research for another that the picture on the back of this stone is not of the original Church that once stood here. There is a guy who lives in Oneida, IL, and has a lot of ancestors buried in this cemetery. He had this stone made and put up here. So, if any of you out there would of know where there is a picture of this church. Email me.
Would appreciate having a copy plus, there are others interested in obtaining one also. Thanks.
