THURMAN CEMETERY
This cemetery is located two miles south of Maquon on the north east quarter of Section 21 in Maquon Township. (Near the old Bennington school house.) This cemetery was originally known as the Bennington Cemetery. Elisha Thurman laid out the Town of Bennington on April 04, 1838, with 20 lots, two streets, and two alleys. The town failed to developed was was used as the township voting place until 1858. After that it was moved to Maquon. Andrew C. Housh bought out Elisha Thurman's farm but one acre was set aside for the cemetery. In 1884 Elisha & his wfie, Anna, sold the one-acre lot to the Bennington Cemetery Association for $1.00. They also sold the one acre lot the school sat on to the Maquon School District #8 for one dollar. The first known burial in the Bennington Cemetery was in 1836 and the last in 1923. Most of the stones have been destroyed by a cow pasture. UNMARKED BURIALS There are surely several unmarked graves in this cemetery
