| Berwick Cemetery is located on the blacktop just outside of the village of Berwick. Berwick Township: Berwick Township (Township 9 North, Range 1 West), was organized at the election of April 4, 1854 and is one of the earliest in the townships settled in Warren County, Illinois. Many of the farms, as late as 1900 were still held by descendants of the men who first made their homes there. The first settlers, Solomon Kaisey and Soloman Perkins, brothers-in-law were the first settlers in Berwick Township and John Wilcker was the first settler in the village of Berwick. His daughter's marriage to a man by the name of Duffield was the first marriage. The first school house in the township was opened in 1835. it was a log building built by Thomas Pearce, near the present site of the Village of Berwick. Rev Martin Randall was the first circuit rider of the Methodist Episcopal church to visit this section of the state. In 1833 a class was organized which met in homes until 1837 when a permanent meeting place was arranged for the village. In 1852 the group erected a hutch building which was used for 16 years, when a new one was built at the cost of $4,000. This church struggled for many years, until finally there were not enough members to support regular services. In 1901 revival services war held by Rev. D. E. Hughes of Monmouth, Illinois and through his efforts a Christian Church was organized under the name of the Christian Church of Berwick, but it too is now gone, some of the members transferring to the Meridian Church east of Berwick. This church too is now gone, having consolidated with the Christian Church in Abingdon, Illinois. In the early days there was quite a colony in the area that held to the Baptist faith. They congregated a the home of John Smith in Roseville Township where on July 29, 1833 a society was organized by Revs. John Clark and John Logan. Rev. G. Bartlett was called as minister on August 1, 1833 and he served until December of 1934. The first house of worship built by the Baptist Congregation was erected in 1840. The present building was erected in 1850 at a cost of $3,000. The Baptist church is still active, having a full time minister, with a small, but active congregation which keeps the building and grounds in excellent condition. The Berwick Cemetery, also known as the Berwick Baptist Cemetery, adjoins the Baptist Church on the north. It is well kept with many old burials, some of the deceased having been born in the eastern states during the 1700's. Like other old cemeteries, many of the early burials are lost, the stones having fallen and were carried away instead of being repaired or replaced. The cemetery association responsible for this cemetery should be commended for the care they give it. The early history of Berwick Township, the Village of Berwick and it's churches, as well as the cemetery was taken from Volume 2 of the Warren County History published in 1903 by mussel publishing Company and edited by Hugh R. Moffett and Thomas H. Rogers. | Murdock, Christiana 1841 1912 Murdock, Jonas L. 1841 1931
