NAME: G. Smith

SURNAMES: McCLAIN-SHIPLEY-LOGAN
QRYTEXT: My gr-gr-grandparents are Richard and Louisa (Shipley) McClain of White County, Illinois. I have searched for more information on Richard McClane/McLain, etc. for several years without success. Don Marsh and I have previously exchanged info, but without finding much more that shown below. Perhaps something here will "ring a bell" with you? The first record found on Richard McClain was his marriage to Louisa Shipley on 13 September 1857 in White County, Illinois. This marriage license was issued on 11 September by R.S. Graham, Clerk and the marriage was performed by R.D. Campbell. The parents of Richard McClain have not been identified at this time. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War and was discharged because of illness and later applied for a pension. His discharge certificate dated on 26 May 1863 shows that Richard McLane served as a private in Captain James Thomas' Company "I," 87th Illinois Infantry. Richard McLane enlisted on 15 August 1862 for a term of three years. The record states "Richard McLane was born in Marion County, Kentucky and is 30 years of age."[this would date his birth as 1832, however, Marion County, Kentucky was not created until 1834, when it was taken out of Washington Co., KY.] Richard McClain died on 27 March 1870 in White County, Illinois. His widow Louisa was appointed Administrator of the estate. Her bondsman was William Stewart. The appraisal of this estate was recorded on 9 April 1870, listing one mare and colt, 6 head of cattle, 3 shoats, 15 head of sheep, one wagon and farming equipment, along with household goods for an estimated value of $250. Richard and Louisa McClain also owned 28 acres of land in the north part of SW 1/4, NE 1/4, Sec.10, T7S, R10E, purchased from Robert Shipley. This farm land was valued at $400. After Louisa McClain's death, the friends and family members filed for pensions for the children. Information included in the pension file of Richard McClain , showed an affidavit from Eliza Jane Logan, wife of Samuel L. Logan. Eliza Jane stated she was the sister of Richard McClain and verified both his and Louisa's death dates. Eliza Jane Logan also verified the birth dates of the children named above. The marriage records show Eliza Jane McClain and Samuel Leander Logan were married in White County, IL, on 24 February 1869. [She has not been located in the 1850 or 1860 Census records?] A short article in The History of White County, Illinois (1883), mentions Samuel Leander "Lee" Logan and his wife Eliza Jane who was a native of Posey County, Indiana. Eliza Jane McClain has not been found in the 1850 census records of Posey County, Indiana. Eliza Jane's birthdate was shown as May 1848 in the 1900 census, so she should appear in the 1850 and 1860 census? Any additional information on these McClain-McLane-McLain families, especially the parents and family of Richard McClain who was reportedly born ca1833 in Marion County, KY and his sister Eliza Jane (McClain) Logan, reportedly born on 10 May 1848 in Posey County, Indiana will be greatly appreciated.

QRYTEXT: I am trying to find out if there are any descendants of ISAAC ELLEDGE who took his family including sons WILLIAM, JOHN W., DANIEL, JOEL ELLEDGE first to WHITE then to WAYNE counties IL about 1830+. I have much information about that generation, but am trying to find out if there any Elledge descendants, especially of the female Elledges still in either county. THORNBURY ELLEDGE who became a cripple due to falling off a horse and almost being burned by a fire all around him became a school teacher in White County and his census records showed both male and female children and I have never found any of his descendants. Do you or anyone working with you know of any such descendants. I know Joel went to Texas and I have about 100 pages of data on the IL Elledges that is being included in a book I am writing about that family.
