BEVERLY "OLD" CEMETERY---Village of Beverly, Beverly Twp, Adams County, Illinois This cemetery is located at the west edge of the Village of Beverly. It is located directly behind the Methodist Church. The cemetery is not used today and it is in terrible condition. The stones have fallen and are covered with over-grown grass and weeds. They are very difficult to find. We made about three trips to this cemetery and each time we would find more stones. We have probed and hopefully all the stones that remain have been accounted for. There are open spaces between remaining stones that could be graves. The last visit to this cemetery was the summer of 1983. (Great Rivers Genealogy Society, Quincy, IL.) Kathy's Notes: In July 2005 there was little left identifiable in this poor old cemetery. An elderly gentlemen (bless his heart) who lives close by, does mow the area, and tries to find headstones and stand them upright. This is a labor of love on his part. Following is the listing done in 1893, with many more listed as "broken stone, could not read, etc." I don't know where all of these stones are now, but there were less than half remaining in 2005. We found it very sad indeed. When Kathy, Pat, Jorden, Kate, & myself visited this cemetery below are some of the photos I took. It is located behind the park and sits behind a church in the Town of Beverly. We spoke to a lady who her father is a direct descendant of the people who helped to settle the town of Beverly, I believe, their name was Mayfield. She said her brother takes care of it because nobody else will and nobody cares anymore about the old and abandoned cemetery which lies in the town of Beverly.
