Independence Cemetery, Adams county, IL.

Burton Township

This cemetery is located just off county road CR-1600 E on county road CR-1150 N.    If you take Broadway (route 104) out of Quincy heading east towards the airport, you will turn south onto CR-1600 E and travel approximately 1/2 mile, then turn west onto CR-1150 N.   Mapquest calls this road CR-1153 N, but the actual street sign reads CR-1150N.   You can see the cemetery from CR-1600 E.

I photographed this cemetery the first time in March 2007, when the temperature had dropped.   We'd been having a warm spell and I'd driven to Quincy the day before with only a light, fleece jacket.   The next day, when I drove out to take pictures, it was 35 degrees outside and the wind was blowing!   I should have known better.    Anyway, I apologize but you will see my blue fleece jacket in some of the photos.   I did my best to crop off as much of it as I could.   The second time I visited this cemetery was in June/July and it was HOT!   There are many stones that had toppled over/broken, and to get a good shot I had to lie on the ground.   One of the stones, one of the prettiest I've ever seen (belonging to Laura A. Wilson), is resting against its base and it was way too heavy for me to move, so I laid on my back and stuck my camera into the opening, hoping to get some decent photos.    I was eaten alive by chiggers!   Oh well, keeps it interesting...    ;-)

Many of the stones in this cemetery are at risk of being lost.   I believe that some already have been.   Many are broken, toppled over, half-buried, time-worn.    Such a shame....     This cemetery is need of a lot of TLC!!!    Someone is keeping it mowed, but some of the stones need to be reset.   While photographing this cemetery, I had to dig out several stones and turn several more over.   Not always an easy job.    I've included some "before" and "after" photos of stones that I dug out.

As always, I would like to thank the Great River Genealogical Society for their help.   They have published cemetery books for all of Adams County.   These books can be purchased from the Quincy Public library or the GRGS website.   I use their books as a "guide" when I photograph these cemeteries because some headstones are difficult to read.   With the help of their books, I am able to figure out who might be buried in a spot with a hard-to-read headstone.

*** They have listed for this cemetery the following burials, which I was unable to find:

  • Adam DELL

  • James H. SHAFFER

  • Emmet MUSSER

  • Mary CLEVELAND

  • Mary J. WILSON

  • James WILSON

  • Elnore PARKER
