NEWTOWN CEMETERY- Burton Township, Village of Adams, Adams County, Illinois

SW 1/4 Section 27, Burton Township:  This cemetery is located at the north edge of the Village of Adams (formerly known as Newtown).  It is well kept today, but in 1971 when it was canvassed it was in terrible condition--overgrown with trees, weeds and brush.  The roads are good and it is easy to find.  Canvassed in 3 sections beginning on South side and proceeding to North edge.

Thanks... email is at bottom of page click on my hand...

From the will of my Great Grandfather's, Abraham Winget and died in the old Soldier’s home on 1/29,1910.  He was a Civil War Vet. information submitted by Brenda Winget

tombstone photo was taken by Linda McGee on February 5, 2007 when the temperature was only 14 degrees outside. So, now I know I'm not the only one who will go out in this cold weather and take tombstone photos. thanks Linda

HI Linda,

That would be great if you could do the look up for me.  I have been emailing Norma and she only went by the information on the death certificate when she posted the information about Abraham.  She lives in CA and has never found the cemetery. I do have a copy of his obit, but it doesn’t say where he was buried.  According to his Will, it does say that he was to be buried in Newtown.  Maybe my Great Grandmother changed her mind and he was buried in the cemetery where the Home is.  But anyways, when you do go to Quincy, I would be very grateful if you could do a look up for me.

Sincerely,
Brenda Winget

email from Brenda this morning on Feb 6, 2006 after Linda had sent her the tombstone photo.

Hi Linda!

Oh my goodness!  Thank you SO much for finding it!  I can’t believe it!  Abraham’s wife died in Muskogee, OK and should be buried by her son.  After he died Oscar took her in.  Since he is not listed anywhere in the books, I am assuming that you will place it on your site or in your books so future generations know it is there.  Is there anything I can do for you?  Maybe send your cause a donation for finding the headstone?  You know that stone looks unique.  It looks like a log.  I am so happy you were able to find it.  I will keep in touch.  If I do find Diancy’s headstone in OK, I will send you a picture.  Thanks again!

Sincerely,
Brenda Winget

Foxie's note: Abraham is not listed in the listings below. He's here to be found with Brenda searching for him and Linda finding him.  any comments or suggestions be sure to email Linda. Thanks

All photos on this page were taken by Linda McGee---Linda's notes: on This cemetery is located on E 1600th Rd, on the north edge of the little town of Adams, IL.   Adams was formerly known as Newtown, IL.    I have visited this cemetery several times, (my gr-gr-gr-grandparents are buried there: Geo W & Hariet Williams) and the grass has always been mowed.   According to a friend of mine, Jim Fuller (owner of Brinkoetter Monuments in Quincy), there was a man in Adams a few years back who used to keep the cemetery mowed and tried to reset some of the fallen stones, along with Jim's help, but this man has now passed away.   Upon further checking, Jim reported that according to the Burton township supervisor the local sheriff brings the county inmates out to keep the cemetery mowed.   What a wonderful thing they are doing, I hope they keep it up!!

Many of the stones in this cemetery are at risk of being lost.   I believe that some already have been.   Many are broken, toppled over, half-buried, time-worn.    Such a shame....     This cemetery is need of a lot of TLC!!!    While photographing this cemetery, I had to dig out several stones and turn several more over.   Not always an easy job.   There are several markers that have been placed against a tree.   These are the kind of markers that only have a person's initials on them, that usually go with a large family monument.   I believe that over time people didn't know where they belonged and simply stacked them against this tree.   I'm not sure that the stones that have fallen over and are half-buried are even where they belong, on the plot of the person they identify.
