On my very first trip to Adams County to
take some tombstone photos and find out about some of the cemeteries in
Adams county, Illinois; I had to stop at the Sunset Soldier's Home and
Cemetery. I have a third great-uncle Nathan A. Terpening who fought in the
Civil War and when returning from the War and having lost his family he went
to spend the remainder of his life here and is buried in this cemetery. It
was such a sad tale told at one of the family reunions as a child I never
forgot him. It's a sad tale.
I thought it would be really hard to find his grave. But I was wrong. We first went to the library and looked up his name in the cemetery book, Took a copy of it with us to the cemetery. But when we got there we almost walked or rather I did walk right to his grave his was memorable to say the least. I did not realize I had my camera set to take black and white photos while we there until I had gotten back home. So, will be going back to get another one in color. The ladies with me were my good friend Kathy Mills, who does typing for me on my sites, Pat Caulkins, who lives in Clayton, Illinois, and my daughter Kate. We had a very fun trip. Can't wait to go back. But now Kathy lives in North Carolina. Maybe she can meet us there this summer.... Dreaming I know. Foxie's Note: We found regular tombstones in this cemetery. They actually to me looked out of place with all the white ones and we couldn't figure it out but there they were. Maybe this summer can get some better photos of them. Nathan Alonzo Terpening was born April 05, 1846, Kelly Township, Warren County, Illinois to John Peck and Mindwell Smith Terpening. On January 02, 1872, he was joined in holy matrimony with Carrie Graham at the Tylerville Church. Notes for NATHAN ALONZO TERPENING: Subsequent to the organization of the 102nd Regiment, he enlisted in the union Army of the Civil War and served until the end. After marriage and the death of 1 daughter and two sons in Warren Co., IL, the family moved to Missouri and from there to Oklahoma. During this time his wife and remaining daughter died so he went to the Soldier's and Sailor's Home in Quincy, Illinois, to live. He died there and is buried there. His wife and remaining daughter are buried somewhere between Missouri and Oklahoma. There are no remaining relatives of this line, to my knowledge.
