Dauphin Hadley Cemetery, Livingston Co., IL
Hi Foxie,
Here are more pictures of Hadley
cemetery that I wrote you earlier about. We did find my Great
Grandparents there and I have attached pictures.
Picture# 140036, 38 and 39 are a
pictures of my Great Grandparents headstone. The first was after we
found the headstone and trampled some of the trees growing up around
it. The other two are more what it looked like when we found it. The
other pictures are around the cemetery. In the middle of picture #
140054 you can just barely see my Great Grandparents stone in the
trees.
Pictures # 140065 and 66 are at the gate
into the shooting range. To get to the cemetery, you follow
the driveway to the other side of the range.
It's hard to tell just how big the
cemetery is because it is so overgrown. For all I know, I have other
relatives buried there. Cleaning it up now will be a slow process.
Whoever does it will have to be careful not to damage any stone
laying on the ground or covered by weeds. I believe that Hadley is
the family name of the cemetery, and I did see several headstone
with that name. The are also 2 deer stands in the cemetery that it
looks like are currently being used for hunting. You can see one of
them in picture 140041 if you blow up the picture and look at the
other end of the lane.
Being a sportsman, I find it hard to
believe that the shooting club hasn't done anything to clean up the
cemetery. Even though it may not be their responsibility.
I know there are cemeteries all over
Illinois and other states in as bad or worse shape than this one.
It's a shame that we have forgotten our ancestors and people that
made this country what it is and given us the way of life that so
many of us take for granted. From soldiers to farmers, they all had
something to do with making this country what it is and don't
deserve to be forgotten about. What you are doing is a very good and
important thing. I thank you for that.
I'm sorry to hear about your father and
hope things go well for your mother.
Best regards,
Mearle Longnecker
Cemetery:
Hadley Cemetery This is Hadley cemetery and
is in Livingston County, Illinois just Northeast of Cornell, Illinois. I
recently found this cemetery with my Great Grandparents grave. It sits
behind a shooting range and doesn't look like anyone has taken care of
it in years. It's hard to tell how many graves are there, but my guess
would be 50 to 100 or more. Many of the markers are down and the only
activity looks the be to and from 2 deer stands in the cemetery
