 We have lost a very dear, important part of our community here at Saving Graves.

 Steven P. Stymiest 4/27/1957 - 11/15/2006 photo of Steve Stymeist
    On November 15, 2006, Steven P. Stymiest  quietly joined his beloved mother in eternal peace. He is survived by his father Darrell Stymiest of Sturgis, SD; his sister Tammy Stymiest also of Sturgis, SD; his favorite Uncle Denton "Doc" Stymiest of Lead, SD; his  former wife and best friend Gloria Stymiest of Fort Mill, SC; two sons Adam and Brandon Stymiest of Fort Mill, SC; his longtime companion Bill Roberts of Rock Hill, SC; as well as his two nephews Robert and Joshua  Sigety and many other aunts, uncles, and cousins of SD. Steven honorably served his country for 17.5 years in the United States Air Force. He will always be remembered as a caring father, son, brother and dear friend. The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Catawba Care Coalition, the Christopher Clinic of Rock Hill (1151 Camden Ave, Rock Hill, SC 29732). Services will be held on Monday, November 20th at 7 p.m. at Hankins and Whittington Funeral Home at 1111 East Blvd in Charlotte, NC. Please join family and friends as we remember this beloved father, son, brother, and dear friend. He will always be loved and missed.Steve & his dog

Steve will also be missed here at Illinois Saving Graves. I counted on him very much in helping with everything. Steve was always there for me and especially the nice email I received him this past August when my own father passed away. I thank you very much Steve for asking me to do this, and I'm going to continue on with this project;  as I know you would want it to continue on. God Bless you Steve!!! Going to miss you!!! Foxie

  I am very proud to be here and hope I can be of some help.  I've spent quite a few hours in the last few years in cemeteries in Knox, Warren, Stark, Bureau, Springfield, Illinois.  Seems everywhere I go there are cemeteries.  Some are very well kept and others have been so neglected it tears my heart.  I have just visited some cemeteries in Knox County, IL, that are on farms and have been so neglected and let go it is really a shame.  I just hope someday there is somebody out there who will be willing to take care of what we are letting go........ Also, I hope to have some of you people out there who will care enough about this project to lend a helping hand.  Just click on the appropriate links and you will receive all the help you need to get you started.   Sometime in the future when time permits I'd like to get some people together and do something about these neglected cemeteries.  We have American Soldiers buried in some of them from the War of 1812 and the Civil War and you can't even get to them... That, I think is really really sad.  My father raised this daughter to be a patriotic and it pains me to see this happen to people who fought so we could be here today.  I really think something should be done about it and I intend to do what I can.  Thanks! and hope you are also willing to help....

This is just a little note to let you know each and everyone of you out there who may be going out into the woods or other places taking tombstone photos. Be careful, dress for the woods, wear spray much of it, hat on head, long sleeves, pants, socks pulled up over your pants, etc. I have contacted Lyme Disease and it is not a very fun disease to have. I will be on antibiotics for at least thirty days, tired much of the time but will get better. Just wanted to put this hear to remind other people that it can happen to you. I didn't think I would ever get it and never worried about it before. Now I will be more careful in the future than I already have been. Just wanted to make people aware that this danger does exist. Thanks for listening & take care while out & about.

Found out today, October 2, 2006, The controller's office is basically for licensing of Cemeteries. They do not do the things I was led to believe and most of the laws following are for existing cemeteries and ones they have a listing of the license in their office. All the below acts pertain to Cemeteries that in use today.

Human Skeletal Remains Protection  Act Coordinator, Illinois Historic Preservation Agency

Below this of what Dawn is speaking about are the links to this Human Skeletal Remains Protection Act.
It is the Human Skeletal Remains Protection Act (20 ILCS 3440).  Go to www.ilga.gov/legislation.  Then click on Illinois Compiled Statutes, then choose Chapter 20, then scroll down until you find 20 ILCS 3440 Human Skeletal Remains Protection Act.  This law protects all graves, grave markers (including prehistoric burial mounds), and grave artifacts that are over 100 years old and are not  located in a cemetery that is registered with the State Comptroller’s Office under the Cemetery Care Act. Under this law, an unregistered grave is defined as any grave or location where a human body has been buried or deposited. This law offers protection from all disturbances including, but not limited to, excavation (e. g. cultivation), vandalism, removal, defacement, or desecration in any way. The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (IHPA) administers this law and it is our preference that graves or cemeteries be avoided and preserved in place.

Occasionally an unmarked grave or cemetery is disturbed, either by an accidental discovery or by a planned undertaking:  (1) If human remains or graves are accidently uncovered, then the discovery must be reported to the county coroner within 48 hours.  If the coroner’s office determines that the case does not warrant any further investigation and the remains appear to be over 100 years old, then jurisdiction is transferred to the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency.  (2) If a planned undertaking will adversely impact an unregistered grave or cemetery, then a permit must be obtained from our Agency prior to any development. Professional archaeologists and skeletal analysts are required to lead the archaeological investigation.  

It is unlawful for any person or agent representing a person to knowingly disturb or to allow the disturbance of human skeletal remains, grave artifacts, or grave markers without obtaining a permit from the IHPA.  Any violation of this Act is a Class A misdemeanor and the violator can face imprisonment of up to 6 months and a fine not to exceed $10,000.  Any subsequent violation is a Class 4 felony. 

Under this law, all human skeletal remains and grave artifacts in unregistered graves are under the jurisdiction of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and are held in trust for the people of the State.  All material collected under this Act will be maintained, with dignity and respect, at the Illinois State Museum , Springfield .  

In some instances, unregistered graves are identified with a grave marker.  The administrative codes of the Human Skeletal Remains Protection Act (17 IAC 4170) state that if direct lineal descendents can be identified, then they may submit a written request to the IHPA for the return of the remains, grave artifacts, and grave marker.  Descendents must demonstrate their direct lineal descent from the deceased through family genealogical records.  The family must agree to the reburial of the remains and artifacts within a set period of time and must provide notarized proof that the reburial has occurred.

    An 1840s pioneer cemetery in Wheatland Township, Bureau Co., IL that was desecrated in the 1960s and neglected since then. This restoration project was started in June 2000 by Jim & Mikki Judge of Buffalo, IA and is now being supported by the Hunter Cemetery Restoration Trust, started by the DeMaranville Family. Volunteers and contributions graciously accepted.
