Email from Steve:
CAMP GROVE CEMETERY, west side of Rt. 40 about 1 mile north of Tanner's Orchard. I'm attaching only a few photos. I found about 20 stones but there's evidence of several more graves. Many graves had only a footstone or broken pieces of a headstone. The sign was lost in the weeds until I finally found it. The American flag was on the outskirts of the field.
Only one Civil War stone was found and that was a private stone
versus the standard military rounded top. A very nice stone,
none-the-less.
The majority of stones belong to children. Stones date 1841 to
1889.
And the search goes on .................
Foxie's Note: This cemetery seems to be a nature preserve and is protected by the State of Illinois. What they do not realize leaving this cemetery as a place for a nature preserve and then burning it off once a year is very hard on the old limestone tombstones. There is nothing you can do to get this mowed or taken care of. They will not do anything because they are preserving Illinois Grasses and wild flowers. |
