With any questions on Cemetery Email Steve. Contributions email Foxie. Steve's survey, photos, & notes of this cemetery:
I was able
to locate 2 Civil War Graves-- Blood Brothers of the last name
S-E-A-M-A-N. Both served in the 47th Illinois Infantry according t6o
locals. These brothers were immigrants. Many local residents from all across Washington know of this cemetery. I spoke with people at the far Western edge of town, downtown, and around Washington High School. Current owners of Baker Cemetery: City of Washington Photographed & investigated Baker Cemetery, Washington, IL. To Access this cemetery, easiest way, turn left off Rt. 8, at stop light, entering Washington city, 1/2 mile from Bowling Ally. This stop light has a Hardees Restaurant on the right. Pass Babcock Field, Washington High School, and go to Westgate Drive. Turn left onto Tottenham Circle. Go to end of cul-de-sac and park. There is a ten foot easement between houses so you are not trespassing. Cemetery lies in a tree grove. On August 22, 2001, I counted approximately twenty graves--- nearly all have broken or damaged stones in-cluding stones that are partially buried due to time. Cemetery originally had a wire fence surrounding it. Fence still exists in back, west side, and North side though it is flush with the ground--trampled over time. Local residents living next to cemetery testify that they mow when they can. No thought given to preserve graves. ****************************************************************************************************** Important Notice: Contacts: Carol Moss--City Clerk---309-444-3196 Washington Chamber of Commerce Mrs. Mauna Smetz-----309-444-4742 ******************************************************************************************************
Land was
originally owned by the Vogelsang Farms and sold to Don Smetz. Don
Smelz has sold the property to the City of Washington thought there
has been no transfer of deed. |

All tombstone photos below are most in regular size. I resized a few for them fit here and since there were not really that many of them put them all on a little bigger than normal. Enjoy! & Thanks! |
