Email Contributions to Foxie. Thanks!!! | Tombstone photos of the abandoned Freeman Cemetery by Al & Carole Martin. Below are some of the photos they took while visiting the cemetery. To me, a photo speaks louder than words ever could. All photos have been left pretty good size for better viewing. If you have any complaints or have trouble downloading this page feel free to email me & I can make a few changes so it will download faster. I have dial up but I don't mind the wait when it's something like this. Thank you bunches Al & Carole for all your hard work plus, contributing your photos to this site for others to be able to enjoy & view, too. | Putting this here and don't think Carole will mind I emailed her back to ask a question and she gave a little more on the state of the Cemetery so thought would include it here. Thanks Carole & your husband Al too for all you guys do to try to preserve these people's last resting place. Thank you bunches & bunches. Hi Foxie, The evening we went to Freeman Cemetery, it was quite cold and wet. We did not even have much of our "cemetery tools" with us. The stones were already wet and very muddy, so we washed them off. The only color of chalk we had was pink and chalk never looks good when wet, especially pink. So we used some flour. I was surprised that it worked as well as it did. We had never used flour on wet stones before. Finding this cemetery, which sits right on the side of the road, has been a challenge, but shouldn't be. We knew about where it was but we have driven past it on many occasions without seeing it. We had decided it must be in the middle of the corn field or maybe totally lost. So, I put it out of my mind while the corn was standing. One evening when we had nothing better to do, we drove down there, with hardly any tools in the car. We were able to see it because most of the weeds had died off. The cemetery ground is large enough to hold many more burials so I suspect there are buried or missing stones. As you saw, the stones that are there are in bad shape and obviously, not over the caskets. It looked like the stones may have been victim to vandals but I suspect they have been accidentally hit by farm equipment. We will probably go back there when the weather permits and try to repair & up right the stones. I believe this cemetery is "endangered" and not far from extinction. Carole Martin |
