Pic #1:  This is the Taz. County Courthouse as it appeared in 1871. It was originally built in 1836. The cupola, on top of which a rod supporting 3 gilt balls was placed but was wrecked when this picture was taken. The site now houses a modern residence.

In Dec., 1836, a plan was adopted for a permanent court house and on January 13, 1837, the contract for the construction was given to William Flagg for a total of $14,500. The contract called for the erection of a 2 story building, with basement, to be erected in the south part of town on a parcel of land donated by John Harris. The new court house was to be "... 40 feet wide and 60 ft. long, including a portico 10 ft. wide. The windows are to be closed with good blinds, the latter to be painted with 4 coats of paint, two of which are to be French green. It is to be ornamented with an iron rod supporting 3 gilt balls."

This is James J. Kellogg, pioneer settler & teacher and one of the first mayors of Tremont.

Pic #3: This is Mr. N.J.Menard, son of Pierre Menard, pioneer & friend of Abraham Lincoln. He was one of Tremont's leading citizens.

Pic #4: Taken in the 1860's, this is Miss Ruth Fenner, one of Tremont's first female teachers. Originally she taught in a "district school" in Elm Grove Twp. and later in the new school building erected in 1897
