New Albany Daily Ledger 16 Dec 1897

Undertaker Disturbed.

He is not Allowed to Bury a White woman in Fairview, Neither can He Bury Her in the Colored Cemetery.

Mr. George Shrader, the undertaker is in a serious quandary. Mrs. Mary Lancaster, white, died last evening at her home near the Fairgrounds, of Dropsay. The husband of deceased is a Negro. It was the wish of her family that she be buried in Fairview Cemetery. When Mr. Shrader spoke to the regents about it he was informed that the interment could not be made at Fairview, as deceased was married to a Negro, and the law prohibited the burying of such persons in white cemeteries. After this the undertaker went to the colored cemetery and was informed by Alex. Mitchem, the sexton, that the body could not be buried in his cemetery because she was a white woman. The funeral will take place from the colored Baptist church Friday afternoon, but up to this hour it is not known where the deceased will be buried. The case is without a precedent in this section and undertaker Shrader is much disturbed.

[West Haven Cemetery Records show that Edward Lancaster [deed #61] purchased this lot and paid for it 13 Jan 1898. Shown as being buried in this lot are:
