Son of William M. and Hannah Smith; born October 29, 1896, Kempton, Tipton County, Ind. Moved to Gas City, Grant County, in 1908. Laborer. Enlisted in U.S. Coast Artillery April 29, 1917, Marion, Ind. Sent to Ft. Washington, Md.; assigned to 60th Coast Artillery. Overseas in April, 1918. Gassed in the Argonne-Meuse battle. Returned to U.S.; treated in Hospital at Camp Sherman, Ohio. Removed to Gas City, where he died March 30, 1919. Buried, Gas City.
