Son of Charles and Anna Van Valer; born April 1, 1895, Griggsville, Ill. Moved to Jonesboro, Grant County, Ind. about 1902. Educated in Indiana University. Traveling salesman. Enlisted in Missouri National Guard, May 31, 1917, St. Louis, Mo. Sent to Ft. Sill, Okla.; assigned to Company A, 138th Infantry, 35th Division. Overseas in May, 1918. Fought in Vosges Sector, at St. Mihiel, Chateau-Thierry, and Verdun. Died of pneumonia September 29, 1918, Mesves, France. Buried, Mesves, France.
