Croix de Guerre with bronze star (France). Order No. 12440 "D", December 21, 1918, General Headquarters, French Armies of the East: A very courageous cannoneer. He distinguished himself during the offensive period from September 3 - 6 , 1918, when his battery was subjected to numerous bombardments by the enemy artillery. Under many circumstances he repaired the telephone lines that had been but by the shells.

Record. Born January, 1896, Adams County, Ohio; son of Jacob Pitts. Came to Indiana. Residence, Marion. Entered service June 1, 1917, Marion. Assigned to Company E, 4th Infantry, Indiana National Guard; transferred to Battery C, 139th Field Artillery; to Battery B, 147th Field Artillery. Private first class, August 23, 1918. Overseas April 24, 1918 - March 12, 1919. Wounded October 12, 1918. Discharged June 14, 1919.  Marion.
