General Orders No. 14, Headquarters 1st Field Artillery Brigade, American Forces in Germany, August 16, 1919: The Brigade Commander cites the following officers and men for gallantry in action and devotion to duty: .......Private first class Charles A. Reed, Battery A, 7th Field Artillery. Near Broyes, France, on June 2, 1918, during the course of a terrible bombardment by the enemy which forced the firing battery to take cover, he displayed marvelous coolness, courage, and contempt for personal danger, by voluntarily returning to the battery position to serve the guns, the position still being under a heavy enemy shell fire, thereby enabling the battery to fire a barrage which was called for after the personnel were ordered to take cover. By command of Brigadier General McIntyre: F.J. Dunigan, Major, Field Artillery, Adjutant.

Assigned to Battery A, 7th Field Artillery. Mechanic, June 1, 1917; private, July 17, 1917; private first class, July 23, 1917. Overseas July 28, 1917 - September 1, 1919. Battles: Luneville, Ansauville, Cantigny, Saizerais, Montdidier-Noyon, Meuse-Argonne, St. Mihiel, Aisne-Marne. In Army of Occupation. Discharged June 4, 1920.
