FIRST GENERATION 1. Daniel Lane was born in 1814 in North Carolina. He was a farmer. History of Idaho, 1920, contains a biography of Silas and Dovey Lane Luttrell. It states that Dovey's father (and Daniel's brother) Jonathan Lane came to Indiana as a child, with his parents. It is probable that Daniel came at the same time. Daniel served as guardian for Harmon Lane's minor children after his death. Jonathan Lane and his son Martin served as sureters for Daniel's bond. See the death notes for Harmon Lane. She was the mother of eight children [there were actually nine children, see Clorinda Lane's obituary], seven of whom survive her, one of them being Mrs. David Jones, near Mt. Pleasant. She was a cheerful, kind hearted old lady, whom it was a pleasure to know, and her death cast a shadow over a large circle of relatives and friends. Lansford Lane, a prosperous farmer living near Terre Haute was at West Baden last Monday attending the funeral of his mother. On his return he visited his sister, Mrs. David Jones, near Mt. Pleasant. Mr. Lane's wife is a sister to Ham Coakley and is well known to our people. They live on a large farm near Terre Haute, where Mr. Lane operates a dairy and keeps a large number of fine horses. He left for home Thursday." She was buried in Prospect Cemetery, Orange County, IN. Daniel Lane and Mary Collins had the following children: 2 i. Levi Lane (born on March 14, 1837). 3 ii. He sold SE NE Section 11 1N 2W on September 24, 1874 in Orange County, IN. This is in the Moore's Ridge area. This must be about the time they moved to Vigo County, IN. Levi's brother Lansford sold land about the same time and also moved to Vigo County, IN. He died Unknown. Clorinda Lane Dixon's 1927 obituary reported that he had previously passed away. The Orleans Progress (December 16, 1897) reported "Mrs. Matilda Jones, whose illness was noted in a recent issue, died last Monday evening at a quarter past one o'clock. Mrs. Jones has been a sufferer from paralysis of the lower limbs for nearly twelve years and was confined to her bed all the time. She was born August 20, 1840 and was married January 29, 1857 to Ben P. Chatham. Of this union seven children were born. On Feb. 8, 1880, her husband died; leaving her the care of the family. Three years later she married David Jones. Of this union one child, a girl was born, and shortly after she was stricken with paralysis and suffered all the agonies attendant until the day of her death. However, she bore it all with that true Christian fortitude and patience that had characterized her early life. She was a devout Christian and those who stood by her bedside and watched her sufferings and heard her agonizing prayers to 'go home' could have no doubt as to her future. As we stood by her bedside during her last hours we were forcibly impressed with the beauties of a true Christian religion and realized the stability of a hope founded on the promises of the Redeemer. She was well known to all of our people and was the recipient of many kind and sympathetic words from all who visited her. Hers was a cheerful disposition and until a few weeks before death, when her suffering grew so intense, was a congenial companion. But the spirit has left its frail abide and joined the glad throng in a clime where suffering is unknown. The children and friends, while losing a loving mother and a kind true friend, are glad that her suffering is over and that the body, that for so many years was packed with pain is now at rest. The funeral services conducted by Eld. M. C. Clark, of Campbellsburg, were held at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. H. F. Johnson, yesterday at one o'clock, after which the remains were laid to rest in the beautiful I.O.O.F. cemetery by the side of the husband and son who had preceded her to that happy land. Many beautiful floral emblems were laid on the casket, and the large concourse of people who followed her to the grave bore silent testimony to her worth as a lady and the high regard in which she was held by the community. The children desire to return their sincere thanks to the host of friends who, by their many charitable and kindly acts contributed largely to her comfort during her last days. Mr. Jones died two years ago and again she was left to battle alone." The Orleans Progress (January 6, 1898) reported "Mrs. Matilda Jones was born near French Lick, Indiana, August 20, 1840. She was the daughter of Daniel Lane, an old resident and prominent citizen of Orange County. She was united in marriage to Benjamin P. Chatham, January 29, 1857. They located on the old Chatham farm near Orleans. There were seven children born of this union. The father and mother with their precious children composed a happy home. The old home roof under the brow of the hill and the new residence afterwards built by the loving husband and father, where Lemuel Richardson now lives, are pictured indelibly on the minds and hearts of the surviving children as a model home and as one of the spots on earth where the sunlight of love and happiness shed their gentle influence in a glow of diffusive warmth, and where they all swelt in a strong bond of affection. In the fall of 1879 Mr. Chatham, with his family, became residents of Orleans. In the early part of 1880 he was attacked with pneumonia and died of the disease, February 8, 1880, being the first member to be separated from the hitherto unbroken family circle. Mrs. Chatham remained a widow until October 12, 1882 when she entered into marriage relationship with David Jones, who lived in the Mt. Pleasant neighborhood. Tillie was born to them and survives both of her parents, her father having died March 23, 1896. The subject of this sketch was an invalid about twelve before she was released from her dreadful pain. She was stricken with paraplegia of the lower limbs and although she received the best treatment medical skill could devise the disease developed into general paralysis. She lived to bestow her blessing on each one of her seven children by her first marriage in the ordinance of their marriage. They all survive her except the youngest two, Lulu and Wesley, who awaited and welcomed her coming into the spirit world. Mrs. Jones died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Homer F. Johnson, on the 13th inst. at 1:15 o'clock p.m., where she had lived ever since the death of Mr. Jones. Now it only remains for me to speak of the estimable character and Christian fortitude of the deceased. Through all of her life she practiced the strictest rules of rectitude. She was scrupulously just, but withal liberal and charitable to a fault. She possessed a loving nature. The good and beautiful found a true admirer in her; the poor and distressed a sympathizing friend. She had a sunny social disposition and even in and through her long period of suffering she exercised great patience and due regard for the feelings of others. Her friendship was a benediction and no doubt the many kind words and acts she bestowed on her acquaintances will be as bread cast upon the waters, if not to return to her to those who were dearer to her than all else in this world. She lived a consistent Christian from her early girlhood. She joined the Christian Church and remained a communicant of that order until after her marriage with Mr. Jones, when in account of the near proximity of the Mt. Pleasant Baptist church to their home she identified herself with that church. The same faith and love characterized every word and deed of her entire Christian experience. It was her delight to have some one to read to her, and the Bible was the book that interested her most. The 23rd Psalm was a favorite selection that she often asked might be read to her. She trusted in the Lord and although she had suffered bereavements and afflictions greater than many mortals are called to endure she exclaimed with the psalmist, Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of Death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. It is an irreparable and heart-rending loss when we are called to part from such a mother, but her memory will always abide with us as a caress and a blessing. Her precept and example will live in the hearts of her loved ones and the pages of the book of life will impart sweeter lessons, because mother helped to impress them. She bore her physical suffering with as much fortitude as it was possible for a human being to do. She appreciates the careful attention of her physicians and the loving friends, but when human love and help failed with her as they must with all of us one after another. She quietly and peacefully fell asleep, leaning on the everlasting arms of her Savior." She was buried in IOOF Cemetery, Orleans, Orange County, IN. She was married to Benjamin P. Chatham (son of Reuben Chatham and Elizabeth Busick) on January 29, 1857 in Orleans Township, Orange County, IN (book C-4, page 156). Matilda's brother Levi and cousin Martin V. Lane married sisters Elizabeth and Martha Shively, who were cousins of her husband Benjamin P. Chatham. Benjamin P. Chatham was born on June 23, 1838 in Orleans Township, Orange County, IN. The same issue also reported in the Around Our Town section "Mrs. Clorinda Dixon, 85 years old, died Saturday at the home of her daughter Mrs. Chamberlain Campbell, near Abydel. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Oscar Wininger and Mrs. Campbell, and one son, George Dixon. Funeral services were held at 2:00 o'clock Monday afternoon at Ames Chapel." The Springs Valley Herald (April 7, 1927) reported "Clorinda Lane Pinnick Dixon was born near Paoli, Indiana January 7, 1843 and passed away March 26, 1927. Age 84 years 2, months and 19 days. She was the daughter of Daniel and Mary Collins Lane; being the third child in a family of nine children. Only three sisters survive her, Mrs. George Pinnick of Richmond, Indiana, Mrs. Lizzie Rankin of Washington, Indiana and Mrs. James Dougherty of Lafayette, Ind. The parents, two sisters, Mrs. Matilda Chatham Jones and Mrs. Mary Grigsby; and three brothers: Levi, Lansford and Monroe Lane having preceded her in death. Her life having begun when Indiana as a state was yet young she has known the struggles and hardships of the early life of our country and has seen its development in various lines. In education from the log school house few in number with their rude equipment to the schools as they exist today. The churches from the worship in the home of some devout Christian who chose to convert his home into a sanctuary rather than be denied Christian worship, the little log chapels and on to the churches of today. Our highway system from its unimproved condition to the present system. Our towns as they are today from villages of only a few homes. She has known of the struggles and conflicts of our nation for more that three quarters of a century and though never bereft of loved ones in war as many have been, her heart went out in sympathy to those who suffered loss from the ravages of war. All her life has been spent in Orange County. In the year 1858 the Church of Christ was organized at New Prospect with about twenty charter members of which she was one and where her membership remained until death. She was married to James B. Pinnick September 25, 1865. To this union was born three children: Asenath, Belle and James Ritter. On May 15, 1873 the husband and father was taken by death and she was left with three small children to rear. On February 2, 1890 death again enter the home and took the father leaving her to struggle for the maintenance of her family. A granddaughter, Alta. B. Pinnick, now Mrs. C. E. Pierce, of French Lick was also reared in the home from the age of six years. She is survived by two daughters: Asenath Campbell and Luzena Wininger and two sons. George E. and William S. Dixon, all of West Baden. James R. Pinnick, Mrs. Belle Pinnick Williams and Cora E. Dixon have preceded the mother to their eternal home. Their loss being a severe trial to her in her advanced years. She leaves nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He home was one of hospitality and the latch-string was always out to many friends and acquaintances, the ministers of the gospel, her homeless nephews and all who came to share her comforts; and as the family left the home circle and made homes for themselves, on their return to the old home it was always Mother who greet them a welcome which only a mother and a grandmother's love could give. The last three years of her life was spent among her children and she passed away at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Campbell where she had made her home and where all was done for her that could be done. After little more than a day of suffering the end came so peacefully that we are made to say, 'O, death where is thy sting? O, grave where is thy victory?' As we are told the sting of death is sin, we think there was no sting in death for her." She was buried in Ames Chapel Cemetery, Orange County, IN. She was married to James B. It lists Maxwell and Asenath. He died on March 5, 1932 in Orange County, IN. The Springs Valley Herald (March 17, 1932) reported "Maxwell Chambers Campbell, son of Maxwell and Sarah Field Campbell, was born on the Campbell homestead four miles east of West Baden, Ind., July 4, 1850. The Campbell family having moved to this farm in the spring of 1842. His father died on March 15, 1850, before his birth, and he never knew the love of a father. Being the youngest of a family of seven children and the father having been taken by death, it fell to the lonely mother to care for and rear the young son, with some of the other members of the family. Two children, Harriett N. and John A., died in childhood before his birth, and Caroline M. was married before this time. So it was under these conditions that the strong hearted Christian mother cared for the remaining four children. It was probably the tenderness and gentleness of this mother's heart and hand that was reflected and molded into the character and life of the young son, known in the family and by all who knew him as "Chame." He grew to manhood at the place of his birth and was married Dec. 31, 1874 to Ellen R. Underwood, daughter of Henry and Nancy Underwood, a young woman possessing all the qualities of a woman of highest character. To this union was born a daughter, Nannie May, Jan. 8, 1880, who died in infancy. Bereft for the loss of a child, they seemed to live more devoted to each other until at length the wife's health failed and death came Sept. 3, 1896, leaving the home broken. At this time he went to the home of his eldest sister, Caroline M., Mrs. Van R. Noblitt of Orangeville, In., where he remained until he united in marriage to Asenath Pinnick, daughter of James B. and Clarinda Lane Pinnick. Feb. 20, 1901. They at once established a home in Orangeville where they lived comfortably and happily until the death of the sister, Mrs. Noblitt, in March 1907, he having spoken of his happiness to again be in a home of his own. After the death of his sister, they moved into her home with a nephew, John A. Campbell, where they resided until his death. This home, a part of the Campbell homestead, just across the state highway from the place of his birth. This home was dearer to him because of these early attachments and memories. No man was more devoted to his home and companion. He was always doing all in his power to make it a home in its fullest sense. Soon after the death of his first wife, he was converted at his home. He loved to go to church, to mingle with neighbors and friends and to have them come to their home, doing his utmost in his unassuming way to make all who came feel a welcome. Their home was shared with the wife's mother during the greater part of the last three years of her life. Churches, charitable causes and those in need received help at his hand. It can be truly said that the beauty of his life was portrayed by his gentleness, meekness, honesty and trueness, making a character of highest integrity. At the age of 81 years, 8 months and 1 day, on March 5, 1932, just as the shadows of night were gently and silently falling over the earth, the shadow of death fell upon him and his spirit was wafted to that new bright home, having told his companion that morning that he was ready to go. With his passing one of the pioneers of the community has gone. While the wife and near ones so deeply feel the great loss, may they look to Him who in the fullness of his love and mercy can heal all our sorrows, and may all who knew him, though touched by his departure from this life, rather rejoice that they have come in contact with one whose life was so full of years and so rich in mercy, love and sympathy. Christ said, 'In my Father's house are many mansions, if it were not so I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself; that where I am there ye may be also.' Besides those mentioned who had preceded him in death, he was also preceded by the mother on April 6, 1890; by a sister, Sarah E. Charles, Jan. 24, 1892; by George W. Campbell, Nov. 25, 1906; Caroline M. Noblitt, March 8, 1907, and James P. Campbell, March 23, 1913. He is survived by the wife, seven nephews and two nieces, several great nephews and nieces and a number of great, great nephews and nieces, besides many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at Ames Chapel, Wednesday at 2:00 p.m., conducted by Rev. A. H. Rumbley of West Baden, Rev. Horace Hines of Sullivan, Ind. and Rev. N. F. Denny of Indianapolis, Ind." His father then married Addie Wortinger who gave Oscar the love of a real mother. He was a member of the Mt. Lebanon Methodist Church where he joined in his early life and left his membership there. Recently he expressed his desire to be baptized by immersion in the First Baptist Church in West Baden, a church he had helped to build. As a young man, Mr. Wininger followed the carpenter's trade, then moved to a farm near Ames Chapel where he spent the latter half of his life. On August 16, 1910, he married Luzena Dixon and to this union two sons were born: Harold Ray, who died in infancy and Lloyd Carrol, who with his family have lived with his parents, and had been associated with his father in farming until recently. Census data is listed as follows: Head of Household: Census year and location, family members, and other facts where appropriate. Family Members: Census year and location, and other facts where appropriate. 2. The spelling of names in obituaries, newspaper articles and census records is often incorrect. Early censuses were done verbally, with the census taker often spelling the name based on how it was pronounced. The spelling could be different in every census. The same thing occurred in obituaries and newspaper articles. However, in most cases these items are reported in this document just as they were written. REPORT INFORMATION Created by: Robert E.
