FIRST GENERATION 1. Andrew Cope was born about 1765. He is listed in the Knox County, KY, tax lists from 1803 through 1809. He is not in the earlier tax lists, so he must have moved there in late 1802 or early 1803. His son Andrew Jesse Cope's birth place is listed as Tennessee, so the family must have come from there. Clay County, KY, was formed in 1807 from parts of Madison, Knox, and Floyd Counties. He appeared on the census in 1810 in Clay County, KY. It lists 1 male (10-16), 1 male (16-26), 1 male (45-over), 1 female (under 10), 2 females (10- 16), and 1 female (26-45). He appeared on the census in 1820 in Clay County, KY. Andrew Jackson Cope Sr. was born on March 24, 1818 in Harlan County, KY. He was a farmer. David Nelson visited the county seat of Clay County, KY and found a land record in the genealogy section of the local library showing that Andrew J. and Winnie Cope owned land on "Red Bird Creek". A Clay County, KY county court record on August 27, 1827 says "On motion of Faris Roberts he [John M. Hacker] is sppt surveyor of the road from the ford of the Red Bird below Andrew Cope up big creek to the top of the ridge and that Andrew Cope, David Lewis, Thomas Roberts, Claiborn Hacker, Titus Hacker, Jack Wilson, Swinfield Roberts, Faris Roberts, Samuel Hacker, Hogan Hacker, Jessee Roberts and Dudly Hunt and all persons residing on the waters on Big Creek keep the same in repair as the law directs." He appeared on the census in 1860 in Stinking Creek District, Knox County, KY. It lists Andrew, Winnie, William, Wily, Jesse, Nancy, and his brother Ambrose and father Andrew Jesse. He appeared on the census in 1870 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. It lists Andrew, Rachel, Polly, Wiley, Jessie, Nancy, Thomas, Andrew, and Silas Mills, probably a relative of his brother-in-law, William Mills. He was a sergeant in Company I, 7th Regiment, Kentucky Volunteers in the American Civil War. Goodspeed's History of Dubois County says he was in the war about eight months, but became disabled and returned home. He was persecuted by the rebels in Kentucky, so he moved to Indiana in 1862. He died on December 15, 1873 in Orange County, IN. He was buried in Elon Cemetery, Orange County, IN. Fred Dillard's memoirs state that "The broad acres extending from the Clements Ford southeastward and to Elon was once the property of Jack [Andrew Jackson] Cope. In my recollection it belonged to two well known and prosperous brothers, Thomas and Andrew Cope. They had married the Ford sisters Etta and Martha. If both had had children they would have been double cousins but as it was Thomas and Etta had no children but they became almost father and mother to the large family of children of Andy and Martha. These brothers liked baseball and fox hunting. Many are the exciting baseball games I have seen on the different diamonds on this farm. Elon played, Ellsworth, Wickliff, Newton Stewart, Dubois, Cuzco, Birdseye, English, and others. They had the first greyhound that I ever saw and he was credited with catching foxes on the run. This farm was made a modern dairy farm by their nephew, Elvin Cope, a teacher and leading civic leader and farmer of his generation." He was married to Winnie Lewis on December 7, 1844 in Knox County, KY. Winnie Lewis was born about 1822 in North Carolina. David Nelson reports that Winnie Lewis may have been related to Messenger Lewis. She appeared on the census in 1860 in Stinking Creek District, Knox County, KY. She died on February 14, 1862 in Knox County, KY. Family members recall being told that Winnie Lewis Cope died while the family was enroute from Kentucky to Indiana and that she was buried somewhere on the banks of the Ohio River, but this appears to be incorrect. Andrew Jackson Cope Sr. and Winnie Lewis had the following children: 26 i. William Cope (born on February 11, 1845). 27 ii. Miria J. Cope (born on October 28, 1846). 28 iii. Wylie Cope (born on June 12, 1850). 29 iv. Jesse Cope (born on September 11, 1855). 30 v. Nancy Cope (born on June 26, 1857). He was married to Rachel "Sarah" Honeycutt on January 6, 1863 in Knox County, KY. References to her contain both the names Sarah and Rachael, it is assumed that both names refer to the same person. David Nelson and Marvin Beatty's records show her as Rachel. Rachel Honeycutt was born in 1826 in North Carolina. She appeared on the census in 1870 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. She appeared on the census in 1880 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. It lists Rachel, her step-daughter Mary, Thomas, and Andrew. She appeared on the census in 1910 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN, in the household of her daughter-in-law, Martha Ford Cope. She died on April 22, 1912. He appeared on the census in 1870 in Greenfield Township, Orange County, IN. It lists William, Mary, Susannah, Elijah, John, and Eleanor. He came to Orange County, IN, in the early 1860's. John was born about 1861 in Kentucky and Eleanor was born about 1865 in Indiana, so the family came sometime between these dates. He probably came with his brother Andrew in 1862. He died in 1879 in Orange County, IN. He was married to Mary Hammonds before 1847. Mary Hammonds was born about 1822 in Kentucky. She was also known as Mary or Polly. According to Vivian Cope Kearby, "Aunt Polly" was crippled and was never married. The fact that she is in her parents household in the 1870 and 1880 censuses seems to support this. However, there is a listing in Indiana marriage book C-5 page 550, for Miria J. Cope and John W. Land on December 23, 1869. Either this is a different Miria Cope or John Land died before the 1870 census was taken.. Goodspeed's History Of Dubois County says that he married and began farming at about 23 years old, and dealt quite extensively in the log and lumber business for a firm in Jasper. He owned 333 acres of land, 100 acres under cultivation and the rest timber land. In the History Of Orange County section on the town of Newton Stewart, Goodspeed reports that Jesse was an officer in the Newton Stewart Masonic Lodge, No. 432, in the 1880's. In the section of Fred Dillard's memoirs covering the people that once lived between Elon and Wickliffe, he reports "Due east of the narrows 1/2 mile and on the Wickliffe-Elon road stands the building marking the location of what was once a more imposing one. It had previously been that of James Gass and his wife Elizabeth (Dillard). Later it became that of Jesse Cope and his wife Nettie (Beatty) and their children Ada, Everett, Elvin, Andrew, Lee, and Agnes. To give an idea of the goodness of these people I wish to record the following story. Andy and I were school mates in #10 school that stood at the top of the hill above this home. As was the custom on March evenings after school I went home with Andy to spend the night. We did the nightly chores and after supper went into the large living room to enjoy the large fireplace with his father and mother. A storm came and there was keen thunder and lightning. Finally the storm abated and there was a knock at the front door. When it was opened there stood a man dripping wet with a two year old child on his shoulder and his wife with a small valise in her hand. The Copes took them in and while drying by the fire they told this story. They were traveling with their household goods with a relative to a new home near Eckerty. North of Elon the wagon broke down and their relative was forced to take his horses and return. They had walked the two miles along the muddy road through Elon and had encountered the terrible storm. They were given supper, warm beds, and the next morning Mr. Cope took the man 'Thad Williams' to a neighbor, Oscar Kellams, and they with his team and wagon moved to the log house south of the Narrows and set them up to housekeeping again." Jesse Cope and Jeanetta Beatty had the following children: 67 i. John Elmer Cope (born in 1880). 68 ii. Ada Ann Cope (born on July 16, 1883). 69 iii. Everett Ellsworth Cope (born on January 11, 1885). 70 iv. Herman Cope (born in 1887). 71 v. Elvin Earnest Cope (born on November 7, 1889). 72 vi. Andrew Earl Cope (born on October 9, 1893). 73 vii. Lloyd Cope (born in 1895). 74 viii. Alma Cope (born in 1897). 75 ix. Thomas Lee Cope (born on December 3, 1899). 76 x. Agnes Ione Cope (born on April 13, 1903). 30. Nancy Cope was born on June 26, 1857 in Knox County, KY. She appeared on the census in 1860 in Stinking Creek District, Knox County, KY. She appeared on the census in 1870 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN, in the household of her father and step-mother, Andrew Jackson and Rachel Honeycutt Cope. She appeared on the census in 1880 in Hall Township, Dubois County, IN. She appeared on the census in 1900 in Hall Township, Dubois County, IN. It lists Nancy, Rachel, Mary, Hulda, Dessie, and Leland. She died after 1900 in Dubois County, IN. She was married to Richard Ford on July 20, 1878 in Orange County, IN (book C-6, page 570). Richard Ford was born on September 12, 1847 in Kentucky. He was a farmer. He appeared on the census in 1880 in Hall Township, Dubois County, IN. It lists Richard, Nancy, and Rachel. He died on July 1, 1886 in Ellsworth, Dubois County, IN. The Jasper, IN Courier (November 28, 1986) reprinted this story in their genealogy section "On Thursday afternoon of last week about 3 o'clock, the boiler of Bender Brothers, at Ellsworth, in Hall Township, in this county, exploded with terrific force, tearing the engine and boiler from their foundations, and hurling the latter through piles of lumber fifty yards, killing instantly Mr. Richard Ford, a farmer of that neighborhood, who chanced to be near the mill. He leaves a widow and three young children. Mr. Wyley Cope, who was working at the mill as a hand, was thrown 100 feet by the concussion, and was badly bruised and scalded; will probably die. [Note: the Jasper Courier of July 16, 1886 reports that he did indeed die.] Dr. G.W. Walker was sitting on some lumber talking to Ford at the time. He was thrown several yards, into lumber piles, scalded on one side, one arm broken, and badly bruised. John Bender, one of the owners of the mill, was badly scalded, but will recover. Nicholas Bender, another of the owners, had some heavy lumber fall on one hand and was slightly scalded. Lafayette Ellis was also slightly injured: he was thrown among the flying timber about 100 feet and his escape is almost miraculous. The mill was a stationary one; was several years old; having been bought by the Benders from the now notorious Archer gang of Martin county, one of whom hangs at Shoals today, and who ran it several years as a blind to their rascalities. It is supposed carelessness in the supply of water caused the explosion." Wheeler Nelson told David Nelson on June 11, 1988 that these sawmills were great gathering places for locals. He said that Richard told his wife he was just going to run down to the store for a minute. Wheeler also said that the only treatment for burns then was covering the victim with wet sheets. Wheeler referred to Wylie Cope as "Uncle Wylie". The 1900 census for Hall Township, Dubois County, IN reports two children - Dessie and Leland - born after Richard Ford died. David Nelson reports that he asked his aunt, Nancy Cope Ford's granddaughter, about this some years ago. She gave him a chilling look and said, "Well, yes, you are bound to discover things if you go prying about." She then said "Imagine the situation of a young widow in those times, trying to make ends meet to keep her family together. The Springs Valley Herald (January 5, 1933) reported "The body of Amos Cope was discovered in a ditch along highway 54 just southwest of town early this morning. The discovery was made by Hib Harris who was passing the spot about six o'clock. A few minutes later Web Crowder arrived at the scene of the accident and although both men knew Cope well neither were able to identify him. The victim's head was crushed so badly that identification was not possible until Coroner Holiday arrived about seven thirty and examined the contents of the dead man's pockets where identifying mail was found. No witness of the accident could be found and although no statement was made by the coroner the condition of the body indicated that death was die to the victim being struck by a vehicle traveling at a fairly good speed. The only tangible clue other than the crushed skull was a piece of door handle - obviously from a car lying near the body. About eleven o'clock this morning, five hours after the accident was thought to have happened, a truck belonging to Wm. S. Grigsby of West Baden, minus a handle of one door and having blood and small particles of bone clinging to its body led to the questioning of Grigsby who admitted that he had been to Hillham for a load of coal early this morning and passed the spot where the body was found at about the time of the accident occurred. Grigsby denied any knowledge of the accident however, and claimed that if it was his truck that struck Cope he was unaware of it at the time. Since the accident evidently occurred just at dawn and since there was a thick fog it is entirely possible that the driver of the death car was unaware that a man had been struck down. This is possible if no part of the vehicle except the door handle struck the victim. The breaking of the handle would absorb part of the impact and a driver on the opposite side of the car could conceivably be ignorant of the tragedy. Coroner Holiday has not given a verdict nor has any charges yet been placed against Grigsby although circumstantial evidence seems to definitely prove that the man was struck by Grigsby's truck. The body was brought to W. V. Ritter and Son's undertaking parlors where it will be prepared for burial. No definite announcement of funeral arrangements has been made. Cope, who is about fifty years of age, has been living at the home of his mother since becoming estranged from his wife. He is survived by his wife, his mother and a brother, Dr. Clint Cope." Census data is listed as follows: Head of Household: Census year and location, family members, and other facts where appropriate. Family Members: Census year and location, and other facts where appropriate. 3. The spelling of names in obituaries, newspaper articles and census records is often incorrect. Early censuses were done verbally, with the census taker often spelling the name based on how it was pronounced. The spelling could be different in every census. The same thing occurred in obituaries and newspaper articles. However, in most cases these items are reported in this document just as they were written. REPORT INFORMATION Created by: Robert E.
