Contributed by, Robert Lane FIRST GENERATION 1. Jonathan Lane was born on July 16, 1808 in North Carolina. He was a farmer. History of Idaho, 1920, contains a biography of Silas and Dovey Lane Luttrell. It states that Dovey's father Jonathan Lane came to Indiana as a child, with his parents. He purchased NE 1/4 Sec. 30, 1N 1W on December 6, 1832 in Orange County, IN, from the U.S. Government. He purchased NE 1/4 NW 1/4 Sec. 32 1N 1W on September 24, 1833 in Orange County, IN, from the U.S. Government. He had other land transactions, but it is presumed that one of these two parcels constituted his "home place". He appeared on the census in 1840 in Greenfield Township, Orange County, IN. It lists 1 male under 5 [Martin], 1 male 20-30 [Jonathan], 1 male 40-50 [?], 2 females under 5 [Eliza and Mary], and 1 female 20-30 [Rebecca]. He appeared on the census in 1850 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. It lists Jonathan (37), Rebecca (36), Liza J. (15), Mary A. (14), Martin (13), Lucy (11), Nancy (9), Jordan (7), David (5), and William (3). Based on the age, the David listed here must have been Dovey. He appeared on the census in 1860 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. The family is listed twice. The Jackson Township census lists Jonathan (52), Rebecca (44), Martin (21), Jordan (17), Dovey (14), William (12), Sherman (9), Thomas (6), and Franklin (6). The French Lick Township census lists Jonathan (52), Rebecca (47), Martin V. (22), Dovey (14), William (11), Jordan (7), Thomas (5), and Franklin (5). No explanation is given as to why they were counted twice or why the list of children (and their ages) is slightly different. The Jackson Township census lists Jonathan and Mordica Lane as next-door neighbors. He appeared on the census in 1870 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. It lists Jonathan (63), Rebecca (57), Sherman (19), Thomas (16), and Franklin (16). There is also a Nancy Burtt (8) in the household. He appeared on the census in 1880 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. It lists Jonathan (71), Rebecca (66), and grandson William (15). He died on October 31, 1883 in Orange County, IN. The Paoli Republican (Nov 7, 1883) reported "Old Jonathan Lane met with painful death last week. He and his wife were in the wagon returning home. The double-trees got of his fix. He got out of the wagon to adjust them when one of the horses kicked him so terribly that he died in a few hours afterwards." His grave stone says "A loving husband, a father dear, a faithful friend, lies buried here". He was buried in Moore's Ridge Cemetery, Orange County, IN. He was married to Rebecca Giles (daughter of Thomas Giles and Lucinia Hazelwood) on February 1, 1832 in Orange County, IN (book C-2, page 41, which lists the date as February 2). Rebecca Giles was born on January 29, 1813 in Crab Orchard, KY. She appeared on the census in 1840 in Orange County, IN. She appeared on the census in 1850 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. She appeared on the census in 1860 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. She appeared on the census in 1870 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. She purchased S 1/2 SE Sec 23, and SW NE Sec 26, 1N 2W on September 16, 1870 in Orange County, IN. She bought 40 acres from her son Thomas Lane for $400 (Book 33, P. 300). She appeared on the census in 1880 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. She sold pt. SE 1/4 Sec 23, 1N 2W on June 14, 1884 in Orange County, IN. She sold 20 acres to Thomas and Rachel Lane for $90 (Book 36, p. 56). This was shortly after her husband Jonathan died and about the time she moved to Kansas. She died on August 1, 1887 in Norwood, Franklin County, KS. John and Lucy Lane Leonard lived in Norwood, a small community north of Ottawa, Franklin County, KS, at the time of Rebecca's death (the only one of her children living in this county at the time), and Rebecca's probate records are filed in Franklin County, so Rebecca surely was living with them. John Leonard was appointed administrator of the estate. In the estate papers her heirs are listed as E. J. Leonard, M. V. Lane, Nancy Hobson, J. S. Lane, all of Quenemo, Osage County, KS; Lucy Leonard of Norwood, KS; Mrs. D. Luttrell of Sp(?) Falls, W. (?); Mary Marlette and Thomas Lane, Newton Stuart, IN; and Will Lane Clinton M (?). Apparently Jordan Lane had died by this time. Franklin Lane died in 1875. Her estate was $150. The affidavit was filed Sep 23 1887, Case No. 3203. John Leonard's name is misspelled Lenard in places but his signature is always Leonard. She was buried in Prairie City Cemetery, Douglas County, KS. The Prairie City cemetery is on the southwest edge of Baldwin City, Douglas County, KS. Rebecca is buried next to Bailey Leonard, John Leonard's father and Lucy Lane Leonard's father-in-law, apparently in an unused burial plot. Thomas Combs' notes report that Jonathan and Rebecca had 13 children, but only 11 have been identified. Jonathan Lane and Rebecca Giles had the following children: 2 i. Eliza Jane Lane (born in March 1833). 3 ii. Mary Ann Lane (born on February 1, 1836). 4 iii. Martin Van Buren Lane (born on February 2, 1837). 5 iv. Lucy Lane (born on February 16, 1839). 6 v. Nancy Lane (born on December 30, 1841). 7 vi. Jordan Lane (born in 1843). 8 vii. Dovey Lane (born on March 1, 1846). 9 viii. William F. Lane (born about 1847). 10 ix. James Sherrod Lane (born in May 1851). 11 x. Thomas Lane (born on May 10, 1854). 12 xi. Franklin Lane (born on May 10, 1854). SECOND GENERATION 2. Eliza Jane Lane was born in March 1833 in Orange County, IN, based on the 1900 census which lists her as b. March, 1833, age 67. Given that Mary Ann Lane was born February 1, 1835, this date is more reasonable than the 1835 date in family records. She appeared on the census in 1840 in Orange County, IN. She appeared on the census in 1850 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. She appeared on the census in 1860 in Centropolis Township, Franklin County, KS. She appeared on the census in 1870 in Franklin Township, Franklin County, KS. She appeared on the census in 1880 in Junction Township, Osage County, KS. She died on March 24, 1912 in Homewood Township, Franklin County, KS. Gary Lane found this in the Lyndon, KS Carnegie Library, Osage County cemeteries records: Eliza J. L. Alward, b. 1865, d. March 24 1912, age 77 years, on same stone as Calvin Leonard (even though she had married Alfred Alward after Calvin's death). In the 1910 census they were living in Homewood Township, Franklin County, KS. They presumably were still living there when she died in 1912. Gary was unable to find an obituary for her. She was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Osage County, KS. She was married to Calvin Leonard (son of James Leonard and Sarah Wellington) on December 15, 1853 in Orange County, IN (book C-3, page 514). Calvin's first wife was Lucy Giles, sister of Eliza's mother Rebecca Giles Lane, making him Eliza's uncle. Family told Gary Lane that Calvin and Eliza had no children of their own but raised several other children. Calvin Leonard was born on August 2, 1813 in North Carolina. He purchased NE NW Sec. 31, 1N 1W on December 26, 1840 in Orange County, IN, from his future father-in-law, Jonathan Lane. He appeared on the census in 1860 in Centropolis Township, Franklin County, KS. He appeared on the census in 1870 in Franklin Township, Franklin County, KS. It lists the family in Pomona PO, house 36, John and Lucy Leonard in same, in house 33. Also listed are Calvin Leonard (21) [nephew?], farm laborer, born in Indiana; Annie Morris (13), at school, from Indiana; and Henry Massey (10), at school, from Texas. The census shows another Calvin Leonard age 55, wife Jane age 45, in Ottawa Township, Pomona PO Reel K-29, page 117. Other residents are Annie Leonard [not Morris] (13), at school, from Indiana ("Cousin Ann" brought with them as an infant from IN to KS and raised by them); Lee Wood (21), farm laborer [not Calvin Leonard], and Henry Massey (10), from Indiana [not Texas]. This is clearly a duplicate and a mix-up, but it isn't clear which is right. He appeared on the census in 1880 in Junction Township, Osage County, KS. It lists Calvin (66) and Eliza (48), Also listed are William Bennett (13) from Illinois, Eugene Payne (21) from Indiana, and William Baker (52) from Iowa. He died on December 11, 1891 in Quenemo, Osage County, KS. Calvin Leonard Estate, Probate Court, Osage County, KS, Case no. 2033. Property SW 1/4 Sec. 28 T 16, R 17 Junction Township. Proceeds to son William Franklin Leonard and wife Eliza Jane. Also lots 2 and 4, Block 4, Cloud Addition, Quenemo, also NW 1/4 Sec. 28, T 16, R 17, D. K. Lord, Executor. Will executed December 26, 1888, son used the name Frank Leonard and lived in Lebo, KS in 1891. The Lyndon, KS Peoples Herald (Thursday, December 24, 1891) reported that his first wife was Miss Lucy Jiles (Giles), married in 1840 in Orange County, IN. They had two sons, one killed in the Civil War by bush-whackers and the other, Franklin Leonard, now living in Coffey County (this was his heir). Calvin was born in North Carolina, moved to Indiana when 14 years old, moved to Kansas in 1859 (Pioneer settlement book says 1857). Married Eliza Jane Lane in 1853. Lived in Franklin County until 1871 when he moved to Osage County northwest of Lyndon, until a few years ago when he moved into Lyndon. However, Eliza was reported as living in Quenemo in Rebecca Lane's estate papers. The Lyndon report is taken from the Quenemo Republican paper, thus northwest of Lyndon was actually Quenemo. Franklin County deed records show Calvin is grantor on September 22, 1859, of Lots N2, Sec. 33 T15S R20, Book A, P. 244; and grantee on June 7, 1858, Lots 3 and 4, Sec. 33, T15, R20, Book A, p. 444. This is about 2.5 miles east of Norwood in a rural area. Apparently there was some effort to establish a town there. This shows Calvin was in the area as early as 1858. The History of the State of Kansas, 1883, for Franklin County, p. 602 states that in 1857 quite a large number had settled on West Branch and on the East Branch of Ottawa Creek; Esquire Merchant, Calvin and John Leonard, and John Heek. She was married to Andrew A. Alward on February 6, 1893 in Quenemo, Osage County, KS. Andrew A. Alward was born in November 1830 in Indiana, based on the 1900 census which lists him as born Nov. 1830 in Indiana, age 69. The age on his marriage license supports this year. He appeared on the census in 1900 in Homewood Township, Franklin County, KS. He died Unknown in Kansas. 3. Mary Ann Lane was born on February 1, 1836 in Orange County, IN. She appeared on the census in 1880 in Orange County, IN. It lists Mary (44), Martin (20), Isaac (18), Melinda (17), Rebecca (10), and Jonathan (9). Also listed are Delilah Compton (22) from her first marriage, stepsons James (28) and George (25) Marlette, and Martin's wife Emma Marlette (22). She purchased S 1/2 SW 1/4 Sec. 2, 1S 2W on October 13, 1889 in Orange County, IN. From Thomas Lane (book 39, page 507). She immigrated in 1908 to Kansas. Cloe Anna Beatty states in a July 1965 letter to Gary Lane that Mary Marlette went from Orange Co., IN to Ottawa, KS to live with Martin in his last years. Based on her obituary, she went about 1908 when she was in her early 70's. She is in the 1910 Ottawa directory. She died on July 18, 1912 in Ottawa, Franklin County, KS. The Ottawa, KS Weekly Herald for Thursday, July 20, 1912 reports that she died that morning, so the July 18 date may be wrong. It also reports that she died at Martin V. Lane's house at 834 Burrough St., Ottawa, KS, she was survived by three children, Delilia Brent of Lebo, KS, Isaac Marlette of West Baden, IN, and Martin V. Marlette of Louisville, KY, and she came to Kansas 4 years ago to maker her home with her brother. She was probably buried at Lincoln Cemetery in Lebo because Valentine and Delilia Brent were living there at the time of her death. She was buried in Lincoln Cemetery, Coffey County, KS. She was married to William Compton (son of Larkin Compton and Becky Andrew) on January 13, 1853 in Orange County, IN (book C-3, page 461). Niece and uncle Mary Ann and Thomas Lane married brother and sister William and Elizabeth Compton. William Compton was born on March 19, 1830. He died on February 9, 1857. He was buried in Moore's Ridge Cemetery, Orange County, IN. Mary Ann Lane and William Compton had the following children: 13 i. Sarah Jane Compton (born about 1854). 14 ii. Delila Ann Compton (born on August 13, 1856). She was married to James N. Marlette (son of William Marlette and Nancy Miles) on November 25, 1858 in Orange County, IN (book C-4, page 256). James N. Marlette was born on May 5, 1827 in Tennessee, based on his grave stone which lists him as 47y/11m/7d. He was a farmer. In the History Of Orange County section on the town of Newton Stewart, Goodspeed records that James was a charter member of the Newton Stewart Masonic Lodge, No. 432, which was organized on May 23,1871. He appeared on the census in 1860 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. It lists James (33), Mary (26), and James (3). Also listed are Nancy J. (13), William (12), George (8), and Malinda (6) from his first marriage, and Sarah J. Compton (6) and Delila Compton (4) from Mary's first marriage. He appeared on the census in 1870 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. It lists James (43), Mary (35), James (13), Martin (11), Isaac (9), Eveline (6), and Rebecca (1). Also listed are George (17), and Malinda (15) from his first marriage, Sarah (16) and Delila Compton (14) from Mary's first marriage, and his mother, Nancy Miles Marlette. He died on April 12, 1875 in Orange County, IN. According to a book titled The Marlette Story, his will was written on March 25, 1875 and filed on April 19, 1875. It lists children Nancy, William, George, James, Martin, Isaac, Malina, Rebecca, and Jonathan. Items 10 and 11 were bequeaths to Sarah and Delilia Compton. The last item was "the remainder of the estate to my beloved companion Mary Ann marlett to hold as long as she remains my widow, and at her death to be divided between heirs". He was buried in Marlett Family Cemetery, Orange Co., IN. Mary Ann Lane and James N. Marlette had the following children: 15 i. James F. Marlette (born about 1859). 16 ii. Martin V. Marlette (born about 1860). 17 iii. Isaac Michael Marlette (born in 1861). 18 iv. Melena Eveline Marlette (born on March 21, 1864). 19 v. Rebecca V. Marlette (born in 1869). 20 vi. Mary Ann Marlette (born in July 1871). 21 vii. Jonathan E. Marlette (born in 1874). 4. Martin Van Buren Lane was born on February 2, 1837 in Orange County, IN. He was born the same year that Martin Van Buren became President of the U.S. (1837-1841). He appeared on the census in 1840 in Orange County, IN. He appeared on the census in 1850 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. He appeared on the census in 1860 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. He appeared on the census in 1880 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. It lists Martin (43), Martha (34), Jordan (15), Philip (14), Wilford (11), Perry (10), Melcena (8), Ollie (6), Lorena (4), and Charles (1). Also listed are his mother-in-law, Penelope Shively (71) and niece Hetty Pickett (6) (her age is incorrect). He immigrated about 1885 to Kansas. The earliest record of Martin in Kansas is the 1885 census. He was living in Quenemo, age 47, single, occupation farmer. Martin is listed as an heir of his mother, Rebecca Lane, in September1887 and living in Quenemo at the time. He died on May 13, 1916 in Ottawa, Franklin County, KS. His estate was settled on April 27, 1918, brother J. S. Lane executor. Heirs were J. A. Lane, son, age 50, of 1175 Hudson St., KC, KS; Philip, 48, and Monroe, 46, of West Baden; Melvena Livengood, 40, Perry, Ollie, Lulu, Charles and Leta, all of French Lick. Total estate was $307 in personal property. His obituary was in the Ottawa Herald on Tuesday, May 16, 1916. His address is given as Hamblin St. between 8th and 9th, so he apparently moved from the Burroughs St. house where he lived for many years (and where sister Mary Ann Lane Marlette died). It states that he had lived in Ottawa for about 15 years, so he must have moved from Quenemo to Ottawa about 1901. He was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Osage County, KS, next to his sister, Eliza Jane Lane Leonard Alward and her first husband, Calvin Leonard. He was married to Martha Shively (daughter of Philip Shively and Penelope Busick) on February 13, 1862 in French Lick, Orange County, IN (book C-5, page 3). Cousins Martin and Levi Lane married sisters Martha and Elizabeth Shively. Levi's sister (and Martin's cousin) Matilda Lane married Benjamin Chatham, who was a cousin of Elizabeth and Martha Shively. He was divorced from Martha Shively before 1885 in Orange County, IN. According to information passed down in the Charles Lane family, Martin V. Lane deserted Martha and the family sometime before the turn of the century and "went West". Charles said that this caused him to leave school in order to help his mother support the family. Mona Robinson stated in her September 26, 1999 genealogy column "Family Tree Leaves" in the Bloomington Herald-Times that Indiana was reported to be a divorce mill in the middle 1800's because of easy divorce laws and short residency requirements. The petitioner only had to place an ad in a newspaper where the action was filed; the spouse was not notified until after the divorce. Martha Shively was born on May 14, 1846 in Prospect, Orange County, IN. She appeared on the census in 1850 in French Lick Township, Orange County, IN. She appeared on the census in 1860 in French Lick Township, Orange County, IN. She appeared on the census in 1880 in French Lick Township, Orange County, IN. She appeared on the census in 1910 in French Lick Township, Orange County, IN. It lists Martha (64) and 3 boarders, among them is Ethel Breeden (18). Martha sold to Napoleon Pierce on March 2, 1888, lots 1,2,8 in New Prospect, also undivided 2/3 of undivided 1/2 of SW SW Sec. 22, 2N 2W and E 1/2 of NW of Sec. 27, same T and R, and W 1/2 of NE of Sec. 27, same T and R, except for 15 acres sold by Philip Shively for the site of New Prospect town and for meeting house and graveyard. All of said land being subject to life estate of Penelope Shively, widow of Philip, Deceased. A judgment was filed against Martha on January 17, 1891, Book 41, p. 326-327, for $110.26 by Daniel N. Long, prosecuting attorney, for part of S 1/2 of SW, Sec. 6, pt. SW of SE of Sec. 6 and NW NW, Sec. 7 2N 2W. Napoleon Pierce paid $49.65 at sheriff's auction on September 14, 1889 and turned over the land to Martha. She died on May 15, 1920 in French Lick, Orange County, IN (book FL-3, page 9). The Lane family Bible reported this date, but Edith Lane Bledsoe's letter reported it as May 5, 1920. She was buried in Ames Chapel Cemetery, Orange County, IN. Martin Van Buren Lane and Martha Shively had the following children: 22 i. Jordan A. Lane (born on June 29, 1863). 23 ii. Philip Shively Lane (born on February 16, 1865). 24 iii. Wilford Monroe Lane (born on June 15, 1867). 25 iv. Perry Calvin Lane (born on August 18, 1869). 26 v. Melcena E. Lane (born on November 16, 1871). 27 vi. Oliver Lane (born on June 17, 1873). 28 vii. Lurena Lane (born on March 25, 1876). 29 viii. Charles Edward Lane (born on September 16, 1878). 30 ix. Mary Meleticia Lane (born on January 29, 1881). He was married to Mary M. Johns on February 10, 1886 in Franklin County, KS. The marriage is reported twice: book C, page 4 on October 2, 1886 book C, page 403 on February 6, 1882. Mary is listed as a widow in the 1885 census, so the 1886 date is probably correct. He was divorced from Mary M. Johns on September 1, 1902 in Franklin County, KS. Mary M. Johns was born about 1844. She died Unknown. 5. Lucy Lane was born on February 16, 1839 in Orange County, IN. She appeared on the census in 1850 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. She appeared on the census in 1860 in French Lick Township, Orange County, IN. She immigrated in 1865 to Kansas. John and Lucy came to Kansas by rail to Westport (Kansas City), then by wagon 50 miles to Franklin County. They bought the farm of cousin Calvin Leonard's son, James, who was killed in the Civil War. They first lived in a log cabin, then built a frame house in 1869. They and their children are in the 1870 and 1880 Kansas census. She appeared on the census in 1880 in Hayes Township, Franklin County, KS. She died on November 8, 1910 in Burlington, Coffey County, KS. Lucy's obituary is preserved in a three ring binder of obituaries in the library room of the Coffey County Historical museum. The clipping is dated November 10, 1910, but the name of the newspaper is not recorded. It states that John and Lucy came to Kansas in 1865 and lived in Norwood until they moved to Burlington in 1901. She was buried in Graceland Cemetery, Coffey County, KS. She was married to John Leonard (son of Bailey Leonard and Lucinda [Unknown]) on January 6, 1856 in Orange County, IN (book C-4, page 42, which list the date as January 11, 1855). John Leonard was born on October 28, 1833 in Orange County, IN. He appeared on the census in 1840 in Southwest Township, Orange County, IN. He appeared on the census in 1850 in French Lick Township, Orange County, IN. He appeared on the census in 1860 in French Lick Township, Orange County, IN. It lists John (26), Lucy (21), Celinda (4), Calvin (2), and William (1 month). He appeared on the census in 1880 in Hayes Township, Franklin County, KS. It lists John (45), Lucy (40), Lena (24), Calvin (22), William (19), Mary (17), Smith (15), Eliza (12), Nora (7), Volney (4), and Mattie (1). He died in September 1910 in Burlington, Coffey County, KS. He was buried in Graceland Cemetery, Coffey County, KS. Lucy Lane and John Leonard had the following children: 31 i. Lena May Leonard (born on May 18, 1856). 32 ii. Calvin Leonard (born in 1858). 33 iii. William Martin Leonard (born in 1860). 34 iv. Mary Leonard (born in 1862). 35 v. Smith Leonard (born in 1864). 36 vi. Eliza Leonard (born in 1867).. 37 vii. Nora Leonard (born in 1873). 38 viii. Volney Bailey Leonard (born in 1876). 39 ix. Mattie Belle Leonard (born in 1879). 6. Nancy Lane was born on December 30, 1841 in Orange County, IN. She appeared on the census in 1850 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. She appeared on the census in 1860 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. She immigrated in 1863 to Kansas. She appeared on the census in 1880 in Junction Township, Osage County, KS. She died on November 27, 1914 in Melvern, Osage County, KS. According to family stories, Nancy Hobson didn't like the way Elizabeth Walls Lane, brother Jordan's second wife, treated her stepson, William S. Lane, born to Jordan and Hannah Hobson. Nancy told her brother Jordan that one day she would take William, and she did. She took him to Kansas without permission. William later returned to Kansas as an adult. She was married to William Hobson (son of John Hobson and Nancy Haga) on January 6, 1858 in Orange County, IN (book C-4, page 264, which lists the year as 1859; Family Tree Maker CD #243 agrees with this date). Brother and sister Jordan and Nancy Lane married sister and brother Hannah and William Hobson. Brother Thomas Lane married their cousin Rachel Hobson. William Hobson was born on September 5, 1837 in Paoli, Orange County, IN. He was a farmer. He appeared on the census in 1850 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. He appeared on the census in 1860 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. It lists William (22), Nancy (18), and Felix (1). He immigrated in 1863 to Kansas. He appeared on the census in 1880 in Junction Township, Osage County, KS. It lists William (42), Nancy (36), Felix (19), Milton (17), John (15), and Otto (8). He died on July 7, 1925 in Melvern, Osage County, KS. A line in the Melvern Review (July 9, 1925) reported that Mr. William Hobson has been very sick for the past week. The Melvern Review (Thursday, July 23, 1925) listed out-of-town attendees at his funeral. They include some of Williams siblings and two of J. S. Lane's daughters. It goes on to say that the Hobsons moved to Kansas in 1863. He was in Lawrence, KS at the time of the August 21, 1863 Quantrell raid that burned the town and killed many people. The reason his obituary was so late was because the paper's linotype broke a gear and only scant news was published the week before. Nancy Lane and William Hobson had the following children: 40 i. Walter Hobson (born in 1858). 41 ii. Felix Hobson (born on May 28, 1859). 42 iii. Milton Hobson (born on February 16, 1861). 43 iv. John L. Hobson (born on July 2, 1865). 44 v. Otto Hobson (born on August 18, 1872). 45 vi. Delbert G. Hobson (born on April 19, 1884). 7. Jordan Lane was born in 1843 in Orange County, IN. He was a farmer. He appeared on the census in 1850 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. He appeared on the census in 1860 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. He appeared on the census in 1870 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. It lists Jordan (26) and William (3). Also listed is Elizabeth Walls (20), whom he would later marry, along with a number of Bledoes who are assumed to be her relatives (her mother was Demoris Bledsoe). He died between 1876 and 1880 in Orange County, IN. Gary Lane says that Charles Galloway stated in a letter that his grandfather Jordan Lane was killed and his grandmother Elizabeth Lane remarried. Steve Morrison says that he may have died in a farming accident. Jordan was alive when his youngest child Thomas C. Lane was conceived in 1876, but he was dead when Elizabeth was listed as head of household in the 1880 census. The Springs Valley Herald (August 2, 1934) reported "Thomas Lane, the youngest and last son of Jonathan and Rebecca Lane, was born May 10, 1854 in Orange County. He answered the Divine Summons to Come Up Higher on July 20, 1934 at the age of 80 years. His whole life was spent on his birthplace as a farmer and there he remained until years ago he came to live in French Lick. He was first married to Rachael Hobson August 31, 1877 and being a happy and cheerful father with a good mother, they made a happy home. To this union were born ten children: Mrs. Lucy Rogers of French Lick, William Lane (deceased), Maude Beaty of French Lick, Pearl Briner of French Lick, Grace Burch (deceased), Sampson Lane, French Lick, Chloe Ann Beaty, French Lick, Ruth Sturm (deceased), and Noble Lane of Topeka, Kansas. With all it was Home Sweet Home and of their mother the children rise up and call her blessed, her husband, he also praiseth her. Mrs. Lane passed on into the Eternal March 4, 1920. On November 7, 1924 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Anna Jones who became to him a devoted companion and a mother. For ten years they have enjoyed the inspiration of each other's lives and the joy of older years. With this event there came into the family Mrs. Zella Brown of Chicago to become a sister. She revered Mr. Lane as a father and often visited her mother and he with much pleasure. At an early age he became a member of the Old Liberty Christian Church, being confident of his faith and loyal to the church to which he became affiliated. Later he moved his membership to French Lick Christian Church where he was for a long time an elder. He enjoyed songs and was a singer himself. He loved everything good about the church. It would be hard to choose his favorite song. He was an affectionate and loving father, very devoted and faithful, always cheerful and with all living a happy abundant life. He was appreciative of the good things in life and always commented on them. He was of good countenance and happy life and well known and beloved by his family and a large circle of friends. His enjoyment of life was in greeting friends, shaking hands and talking over the experiences of life with them. He was an inspiration to the young for he was good to know and shared his life with them. The community will have a vacancy of his life left by Uncle Tom as he was so familiarly known. It is with a sense of sadness mingled with triumph that we write this life story which has been so well and nobly lived. But as the Book of Truth records Blessed are they who die in the Lord, their works do follow them and they shall rest from their labors. He is mourned by his six children, a wife, a daughter of his wife, 18 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and a very great host of friends." See Orange County Heritage book compiled by Arthur L. Dillard, 1971, pp. 137-180, French Lick and West Baden History by Andrew Jackson Rhodes. Gary Lane talked with Sampson's son Robert in 1997. He verified the story by Rhodes. He said he was born at Flat Lick. It was a mild mineral spring with very soft water, not as strong as the mineral springs at the hotels. She appeared on the census in 1910 in French Lick Township, Orange County, IN. She died on June 28, 1951 in Dayton, Montgomery County, OH. An unknown newspaper (probably the Springs Valley Herald) reported "Sarah Belle Lane, daughter of James Perry and Priscilla Jane Campbell, was born Aug 16, 1870 near West Baden. She was saved and united with the church in early girlhood. She was united in marriage to Charles G. Wells on January 11, 1891. To this union was born one son, Luther. She took into her home Rosa Pointer, who became the wife of Fred Dillinger and now resides in Kokomo, IN. After the death of Mr. Wells, she spent a few years in Ohio. She was united in marriage on September 21, 1946 to Perry C. Lane of West Baden. Mr. Lane passed away just seven weeks ago on May 5, 1951. She had gone to Ohio for a visit in the home of her son and granddaughter when she became seriously ill. The best medical and nursing care proved unable to prolong her life when, at the age of 80 years, 10 months, and 5 days, death called her to her heavenly home in the early morning hours of June 21. She leaves to mourn her departure the son, Luther, and wife of Dayton, Ohio, two grandchildren, Charles Wells of Clarksville, Indiana and Mrs. Ralph Stitsworth of Jamestown, Ohio, three great grandchildren, the foster daughter and family of Kokomo, Indiana, two stepdaughters, and two brothers, George Campbell of West Baden and James Campbell of Lafayette." She was buried in Ames Chapel Cemetery, Orange County, IN. 26. Melcena E. “Mellie” Lane was born on November 16, 1871 in Orange County, IN. She is listed under both Jones and Livengood in the Ames Chapel Cemetery transcriptions. She was married to William Ellsworth Livengood (son of William J. Livengood and Margaret Bledsoe) on October 30, 1890 in Orange County, IN (book H-1, page 182). William Ellsworth Livengood was born on October 6, 1868 in French Lick, Orange County, IN. He appeared on the census in 1870 in French Lick Township, Orange County, IN. He was Postmaster from 1915 to 1921 in French Lick, Orange County, IN. He appeared on the census in 1880 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. He appeared on the census in 1910 in French Lick Township, Orange County, IN. It lists William (no age), Mellie (37), and Ethel (5). Also listed is William's brother, Fred. He died on March 3, 1922 in Mitchell, Lawrence County, IN. The Springs Valley Herald (March 9, 1922) reported, in part, "Mr. Livengood and his daughter, accompanied by Geneva Rogers and Elvis Parks, had left this city about six o'clock Friday morning for Bedford to attend the sectional Basketball Tournament to be held there that day. When they met a car on the road about four miles north of Mitchell they drove near the edge of the concrete pavement of the road bed in passing it and owing to the icy condition the car skidded and turned over. Mr. Livengood was pinned under the steering wheel and his chest was crushed. Death came to him instantly. Miss Ethel was caught across the back by the edge of the car and her back broken and internally injured. An ambulance was called from Bedford, but she died before reaching the hospital." He was buried in Ames Chapel Cemetery, Orange County, IN. Melcena E. Lane and William Ellsworth Livengood had the following children: 82 i. [Male] Livengood (born on July 20, 1891). 83 ii. He was buried on February 22, 1942 in Anderson Cemetery, Martin County, IN. 27. Oliver Lane was born on June 17, 1873 in Orange County, IN. He was crippled in some fashion, perhaps from birth. Edith Lane Bledsoe recalled that all of the younger children were "afraid of Uncle Oliver". In his day, there was likely also the assumption that he was not mentally competent, though that may not have been the case at all. Oliver lived for many years at the Orange County Home for the Indigent (the poor farm, see notes for the 1910 census), and he was living there at the time of his death. He appeared on the census in 1880 in French Lick Township, Orange County, IN. He appeared on the census in 1910 in Paoli Township, Orange County, IN, as an inmate in the poor farm. Charles Edward Lane was born on September 16, 1878 in Orange County, IN. Edith Lane Bledsoe's letter dated January 15, 1950 gives his birth date as September 16, 1880. The Lane family Bible reports (in two places) that Leta Lane was born on January 29, 1881, which would rule out this birth date. Also, the 1880 census lists him as 1 year old, which would suggest that the date was 1878. He appeared on the census in 1880 in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. He appeared on the census in 1910 in French Lick Township, Orange County, IN. It lists Charles (31), Emma (24), Chester (3), and Clarence (1). It lists his occupation as barber shop, as it did with his brother, Perry. Did they work together? He appeared on the census in 1920 in French Lick Township, Orange County, IN. It lists Charles (40), Emma (33), Chester (13), Clarence (11), and Edyth (5). His occupation is listed as Barber At Hotel. Charles (known as Charley) was a barber during the early years of his life. Later, he operated a small grocery store across from the post office in French Lick, IN, until shortly after World War II. When coffee was a nickel a cup, with no free refills, Charley had the reputation of drinking his cup two-thirds to three-quarters of the way down, then asking for his coffee to be "warmed up". Long after his death, there were people in southern Indiana, when they wanted their coffee warmed, would say "Charley Lane my coffee". The Springs Valley Herald (February 3, 1905) reported " All kinds of people come to French Lick - millionaires and misers, princes and paupers, sports with money to throw at the birds and parsimonious old codgers who are so stingy and close that Pluto with all its penetration can't get through them. But the tightest, flintiest specimen of Shylock that ever struck this valley ambled into Charlie Lane's barber shop the other day for a shave. He sported the somewhat generous name of Pat Scanlan, and hailed from Peoria, Ill. Before taking the chair he inquired the price of a shave, and when told that it was 15 cents he threw up his hands in holy horror and started to leave for another shop; but when told that it was the same price concluded to remain. When Charlie came to the finishing touches and said 'Wet or dry?' Pat Said, 'a little oil, please.' Charlie suggested a little tonic which Pat accepted, but when he went to settle and found that the tonic was 10 cents extra he raised a howl and swore he'd been buncoed. Then with tears in his eyes, he declared he was a poor man with barely enough to get home on. Thinking he might be a pauper, Charlie let him off. He is reported to be worth $200,000, and probably is, for he certainly has never squandered his money. He left for home feeling that French Lick was a skin game from first to last." He died on August 22, 1957 in French Lick, Orange County, IN. He was buried in Ames Chapel Cemetery, Orange County, IN. God called him to his reward April 22, 1929 at the age of 56 years and 9 months. All of his life was spent as a farmer in the immediate community of his birth where he is widely known amount his many friends. He was married to Lucy J. Lane January 16, 1896. To this home five children were born, three daughters and two sons, namely, Marie M. Beaty, Zoe Kearby, Geneva R. Clay of French Lick, Guy E. of Indianapolis and Hugh T. of Los Angeles, California. For several months he had been in failing health and a few weeks ago went to his son Hugh in California thinking the change of climate would be helpful to him. This proved to be of no value and at dawn, on Monday morning April 22, he passed away in a Los Angeles hospital. He was converted at an early age and was baptized in the faith of the Church of Christ at South Liberty where he was a faithful member. He served as deacon for many, many years and was never absent but very few times the past years and then only when sick or called away from home to help someone in trouble. The community has lost a good citizen. The weather was never too bad nor the distance too far, for him to go and administer to the sick and the suffering. A good man is gone. The home, community and church will miss him. We cannot know or understand God's plans but our faith gives us insight in the future and confidence to believe that this kind and loving father and husband who has made his home here one of paradise for his loved ones, has gone to prepare for them an eternal home where moth and rust cannot corrupt. As he loved and adored his grandchildren he now stands waiting with outstretched arms to receive all who follow in grandfather's footsteps. He leaves to mourn his departure four sisters, one brother, a devoted wife, two sons, three daughters, two son-in-laws, three granddaughters, a grandson and a host of relatives and friends. His mother, father, one brother and two sisters preceded him to the city Beautiful." He was buried in South Liberty Cemetery, Orange County, IN. The parents and her brothers Willie, Claude, Sampson and Noble, and her sisters Lucy Rogers, Maude Beatty, Pearle Briner, Grace Burch, and Ruth Sturm preceded her in death. With the passing of Aunt Cloe we can say with the poet Holmes, ‘And if I should live to be - The last leaf upon the tree - In the spring let them smile, as I do now - At the old forsaken bough where I cling’. And so her life has been a mosaic of joy and sadness and her relatives and friends have been shining jewels along the way. Survivors include her daughter-in-law, two grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. Years are fleeting and a brief history of a great life is so soon written on paper, but the influence and example of the life of Cloe Anna Beatty will last throughout Eternity and the world is a better place because she lived, worked, loved, and now is at peace." When Philip died the land was divided among his children and this land went to Martha Shively Lane, wife of Martin Lane. She ultimately gave or sold it to her son Wilford Monroe Lane. When he died, his brother Philip Shively Lane, who was a banker at the time, took the property for debts he claimed Wilford owed to him. Philip promptly sold it to Chester. He and his brother Clarence owned two gambling establishments, the Club Chateau in West Baden and the Green Acres Club in French Lick (their uncle, Perry C. Lane operated the Indiana Club, directly across from the Chateau Club). Both of them worked for a brief time at casinos in Lake Tahoe, NV and Las Vegas, NV. The Green Acres Club was only open for a short while. Bowing to pressure from the authorities, Chester converted the building into a motel around 1954. This building burned to the ground in 1959 during a flood, and a new motel was built. Ermel Lane retired and sold the motel in 1975. As of 2001, it was still named Lane's Motel. Chester was a self-taught musician; he played by ear, although he could follow written music if given time. He was good enough that he was playing the piano to accompany silent movies at a French Lick theater in his early high school years. Before his majority, he had organized an orchestra to play at the West Baden Springs Hotel. Chester was not a scholar - he had to attend summer remedial classes at Indiana Central College at Danville, IN, in order to graduate from high school. However, he always loved to read, and he was proud to have held card number 01 at the French Lick Library (now the Melton Public Library). His favorite genre of literature was the historical novel, but he also enjoyed mysteries such as "Sherlock Holmes" and "the Saint". He died on June 24, 1963 in Paoli, Orange County, IN. He died from colon cancer. James Lane related this story on Chester's last trip to the Orange County Hospital. James and Ermel helped Chester into the back seat of the car to take him to the hospital. However, they only made it as far as the Gulf filling station in West Baden when Chester said that he didn't think he could make it. They called an ambulence to pick him up. Chester's bones were so weakened by his cancer that his collar bone broke in the process of getting him into the car. He died in the hospital about two weeks later. He was married to Hattie Ermel Toliver (daughter of William Maxfield Toliver and Lavinia Elma Stackhouse) on November 25, 1927 in Shoals, Martin County, IN. Census data is listed as follows: Head of Household: Census year and location, family members and ages, and other facts where appropriate. Family Members: Census year and location, and other facts where appropriate. 2. The spelling of names in obituaries, newspaper articles and census records is often incorrect. Early censuses were done verbally, with the census taker often spelling the name based on how it was pronounced. The spelling could be different in every census. The same thing occurred in obituaries and newspaper articles. However, in most cases these items are reported in this document just as they were written. REPORT INFORMATION Created by: Robert E.
