Descendants of James Lane - Nov 10 2000 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note about this genealogy: The first five generations are speculative. It is certain that the people existed, but some of the relationships are unproven. Information on generations one and two come from the LDS site. Information on generations three, four and five come from Donald Senn, who is descended from Mordeci (Mordica) Lane (#16). There is some circumstantial evidence (noted in the appropriate sections), but so far there is no proof that these people are related in exactly the way shown in this document. The family unit for Jonathan Lane, Sr. in generation five is also speculative. The list of children is based on Donald Senn's information. There is ample proof that these people existed, but the family unit is unproven. Research seems to support some of them being siblings, but not others. For example, the 1880 census lists Mordeci's parents as being born in North Carolina, but lists Jonathan's parents as being born in Pennsylvania. It is possible that this list mixes children of two families together. FIRST GENERATION 1. James Lane was born about 1675 in Westmoreland County, VA. He died about 1699 in Westmoreland County, VA. Coffey was born on Jul 20 1776 in Amherst County, VA. He died on Jan 7 1849 in Saline or Hamilton County, VA. 15. Mordecai Lane was born about 1787 in Guilford County, NC. He died Unknown. SIXTH GENERATION 16. Mordeci "Mordica" Lane was born in 1803 in Greensboro, NC. The 1850 census lists his age as 50, the 1860 census lists his age as 55, and the 1880 census lists his age as 72. None of these match his birth year of 1803. His brother Jonathan Lane took out federal land in Orange Co., IN, in 1832. Based on census and marriage records, Mordeci must have come with him or shortly after him. He appeared on the 1840 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. He appeared on the 1850 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. It lists Mordica (50), Mary (41), James (21), William (18), Jesse (7), David (4), and Henry (1). He appeared on the 1860 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. It lists Mordica (55), Mary (45), David C. (14), and Hannah (11). According to Goodspeed's History of Pike and Dubois Counties, Mordica and Mary moved from Orange County to Dubois County in 1879. He appeared on the 1880 census in Columbia Township, Dubois County, IN. It lists Mordeci (72) and Mary (60) in the household of their son David C. Lane. He died on Oct 14 1883 in Dubois County, IN and was buried in Moores Ridge Cemetery, Orange County, IN. It is assumed that he is the Mordacai Lane, 1804-1884, found in Moores Ridge Cemetery. His wife, Mary, was buried there in 1882, so it makes sense that he would choose to be buried in the same cemetery. He was married to Unknown before 1826 in North Carolina. Unknown was born Unknown. She died Unknown. Mordeci Lane and Unknown had the following children: 22 i. Jonathan Simpson Lane. 23 ii. James M. Lane. 24 iii. William Lane. He was married to Mary A. Allen (daughter of Lewis Allen and Elizabeth Ann Black) on Feb 27 1840 in Orange County, IN. Mary A. Allen was born on Mar 29 1807 in Tennessee. The 1850 census lists her age as 41, the 1860 census lists her age as 45, and the 1880 census lists her age as 60. None of these match her birth year of 1807. She appeared on the 1850 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. She appeared on the 1860 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. She appeared on the 1880 census in Columbia township, Dubois County, IN. She died on Apr 27 1882 in Orange County, IN and was buried in Moores Ridge Cemetery, Orange County, IN. Mordeci Lane and Mary A. Allen had the following children: 25 i. Jesse A. Lane. 26 ii. David C. Lane. 27 iii. Henry Lane. 17. Jonathan Lane Jr. was born on Jul 16 1808 in North Carolina. According to Thomas Combs' notes and Indiana land records, Jonathan Lane took out from the U.S. Government NE 1/4 Sec. 30, 1N 1W on 06 Dec 1832, and NE 1/4 NW 1/4 Sec. 32 1N 1W on 24 Sep 1833 (this is southeast of French Lick, Orange County, IN). He had many other land transactions, but it is presumed that one of these parcels constituted his "home place". He appeared on the 1840 census in Greenfield Township, Orange County, IN. The household had one male under 5 [Martin], one male 20-30 [Jonathan], one male 40-50 [?], two females under 5 [Eliza and Mary], and one female 20-30 [Rebecca]. He appeared on the 1850 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. It lists Jonathan (37), Rebecca (36), Liza J. (15), Mary A. (14), Martin (13), Lucy (11), Nancy (9), Jordan (7), David (5), and William (3). Based on the age, the David listed here must have been Dovey. He appeared on the 1860 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. The family is listed twice. The Jackson Township census lists Jonathan (52), Rebecca (44), Martin (21), Jordan (17), Dovey (14), William (12), Sherman (9), Thomas (6), and Franklin (6). The French Lick Township census lists Jonathan (52), Rebecca (47), Martin V. (22), Dovey (14), William (11), Jordan (7), Thomas (5), and Franklin (5). No explanation is given as to why they were counted twice or why the list of children (and their ages) is slightly different. He appeared on the 1880 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. It lists Jonathan (71), Rebecca (66), and William S. (grandson) (15) . He died on Oct 31 1883 in Orange County, IN as a result of being kicked by a horse and was buried in Moores Ridge Cemetery, Orange County, IN. He was married to Rebecca Giles (daughter of Thomas Giles and Lucy Hazlewood) on Feb 1 1832 in Orange County, IN. The marriage date is listed as February 2 instead of February 1 in Indiana Marriages Through 1850. Rebecca Giles was born on Jan 29 1813 in Crab Orchard, KY. She appeared on the 1840 census in Orange County, IN. She appeared on the 1850 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. She appeared on the 1860 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. She appeared on the 1880 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. Rebecca Lane bought from Thomas Lane on 16 Sep 1870 for $400, 40 acres, S 1/2 SE Sec 23, and SW NE Sec 26, 1N 2W Book 33, P. 300. She sold to Thomas and Rachel Lane on 14 Jun 1884 for $90, 20 acres, pt. SE 1/4 Sec 23, 1N 2W Book 36, p. 56. This was shortly after her husband Jonathan died and about the time she moved to Kansas. She died on Aug 1 1887 in Norwood, KS. John and Lucy Lane Leonard lived in Norwood, a small community north of Ottowa, Franklin County, KS at the time of Rebecca's death (the only one of her children living in this county at the time), and Rebecca's probate records are filed in Franklin County, so Rebecca surely was living with them. John Leonard was appointed administrator of the estate. In the estate papers her heirs are listed as E. J. Leonard, M. V. Lane, Nancy Hobson, J. S. Lane, all of Quenemo, Osage County, KS; Lucy Leonard of Norwood, KS; Mrs. D. Luttrell of Sp(?) Falls, W. (?); Mary Marlette and Thomas Lane, Newton Stuart, IN; and Will Lane Clinton M (?). Apparently Jordan Lane had died by this time. Franklin Lane died in 1875. Her estate was $150. The affidavit was filed Sep 23 1887, Case No. 3203. John Leonard's name is misspelled Lenard in places but his signature is always Leonard. She was buried in Prairie City Cemetery, Douglas County, KS. The Prairie City cemetery is on the southwest edge of Baldwin City, Douglas County, KS. Rebecca is buried next to Bailey Leonard, John Leonard's father and Lucy Lane Leonard's father-in-law, apparently in an unused burial plot. Thomas Combs' notes report that Jonathan and Rebecca had 13 children, but only 11 have been identified. Jonathan Lane and Rebecca Giles had the following children: 28 i. Eliza Jane Lane. 29 ii. Mary Ann Lane. 30 iii. Martin Van Buren Lane. 31 iv. Lucy Lane. 32 v. Nancy Lane. 33 vi. Jordan Lane. 34 vii. Dovey Lane. 35 viii. William F. Lane. 36 ix. James Sherrod Lane. 37 x. Thomas Lane. 38 xi. Franklin Lane. 18. Daniel Lane was born in 1814 in North Carolina. His brother Jonathan Lane took out federal land in Orange Co., IN, in 1832. Based on census and marriage records, Daniel must have come with him or shortly after him. He appeared on the 1840 census in Paoli Township, Orange County, IN. He appeared on the 1850 census in Paoli Township, Orange County, IN. It lists Daniel (36), Mary (32), Levi (13), Matilda (10), Clorenda (7), Louisa (8), and Lanceford (3). The list of children and birth dates is based on this. He was a Farmer. He died Unknown. He was married to Mary Collins on Jun 11 1835 in Orange County, IN. Mary Collins appeared on the 1850 census in Paoli Township, Orange County, IN. She was born Unknown. She died Unknown. Daniel Lane and Mary Collins had the following children: 39 i. Levi Lane. 40 ii. Matilda Lane. 41 iii. Clorinda Lane. 42 iv. Louisa Lane. 43 v. Lanceford Lane. 19. John A. Lane was born in 1816. He died Unknown. 20. Thomas Lane was born about 1820 in North Carolina. His brother Jonathan Lane took out federal land in Orange Co., IN, in 1832. Based on census and marriage records, Daniel must have come between 1840 and 1844. He is not in the 1840 census, but he was married in Orange County in 1844. He appeared on the 1850 census in French Lick Township, Orange County, IN. It lists Thomas (30), Elizabeth J. (21), Nancy A. (5), Mary (3), and William J. (3/12). The list of children and birth dates is based on this. He died about 1855 in Orange County, IN. The Probate Order Book shows the estate of Thomas Lane, p. 450, estate to Elizabeth J. Lane, Feb 20 1855; heirs of Thomas Lane, p. 433. Jonathan Bush was appointed guardian of Nancy, Mary, William, and Sarah, minor heirs of Thomas Lane, deceased. Partition of land on July 9 1858 to Elizabeth Underwood, Stephen Underwood, Nancy, William, Mary, and Sarah Lane. He was a Farmer. He was married to Elizabeth J. Compton on Mar 14 1844 in Orange County, IN. Elizabeth J. Compton was born about 1829. She appeared on the 1850 census in French Lick Township, Orange County, IN. She died Unknown. Thomas Lane and Elizabeth J. Compton had the following children: 44 i. Nancy A. Lane. 45 ii. Mary Lane. 46 iii. William J. Lane. 47 iv. Sarah E. Lane. 21. Jesse Lane was born Unknown. He died Unknown. SEVENTH GENERATION 22. Jonathan Simpson Lane was born in 1826 in North Carolina. He died on Dec 27 1893 in Crawford County, IN and buried in Wickliffe Cemetery, Crawford County, IN. He was married to Jane Kellums (daughter of James Kellums and Sarah Rains) on May 17 1849 in Crawford County, IN. Jane Kellums was born on Oct 8 1833 in Tennessee. Indiana Marriages Through 1850 lists her as Jane Killems. She died on Dec 28 1896 in Crawford County, IN and was buried in Wickliffe Cemetery, Crawford County, IN. Jonathan Simpson Lane and Jane Kellums had the following children: 48 i. Fritz Lane. 49 ii. Elta Lane. 50 iii. Therzilla Ann Lane. 51 iv. Malvinia Lane. 52 v. Terrica Lane. 53 vi. Bazella (Barzil) Lane. 54 vii. William Yance (Yantz) Lane. 55 viii. William A. Lane. 56 ix. James H. Lane. 57 x. Nancy E. Lane. 58 xi. John L. Lane. 59 xii. Gifford Lane. 23. James M. Lane was born in 1829 in North Carolina. He appeared on the 1850 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. He died Unknown. 24. William Lane was born in 1832 in Orange County, IN. He appeared on the 1850 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. He died Unknown. 25. Jesse A. Lane was born on Dec 7 1842 in Orange County, IN. He appeared on the 1850 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. He died on Mar 25 1917. He was married to Rachel Allen on Oct 26 1865. Rachel Allen was born Unknown. She died Unknown. Jesse A. Lane and Rachel Allen had the following children: 60 i. Rose Ann Lane. 61 ii. Mahulda J. Lane. 62 iii. Henry F. Lane. 63 iv. Sylvania Lane. 64 v. Ollie L. Lane. 65 vi. Enoch Bloomer Lane. 66 vii. Mary Lane. 26. David C. Lane was born on Sep 20 1846 in Orange County, IN. He appeared on the 1850 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. He appeared on the 1860 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. He died on Nov 11 1914. A biography published in "History of Pike and Dubois Counties, 1885 History of Dubois Co., Indiana, Hall Twp", p. 766 states "David C. Lane was born September 20, 1846, and was one of a family of three children - Jesse A., Henry and David C. - born to Mordica and Mary (Allen) Lane, natives, respectively, of North Carolina and Tennessee. They were married in Orange County, Ind., where they remained until 1879, when they moved to Dubois County, Ind., and lived there until their deaths. The mother was an earnest and useful member of the Christian Church. Our subject was reared and educated by his parents, and remained at home until his marriage, which occurred June 11, 1863; his wife was Miss Mary McGrew, daughter of Washington and Susan (Archer) McGrew of Orange County, Ind. Eight children were born to this union: William M., Emma J., Lavina, Andrew, Zerilda, Martha, Sarah A. and Charley H. Mrs. Lane was born in 1845 and is a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mr. Lane owns 340 acres of excellent land, well improved, and is a good farmer and stock raiser, and by energy and industry has acquired all his property since his marriage." He was married to Mary A. McGrew (daughter of Washington McGrew and Susan Archer) on Jun 11 1863 in Orange County, IN. Mary A. McGrew was born in 1845. She died Unknown. 27. Henry Lane was born in 1849 in Orange County, IN. He appeared on the 1850 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. He appeared on the 1860 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. The 1850 census lists Henry, age 1. The 1860 census lists Hannah, age 11. David Lane's biography mentions siblings Jesse and Henry, so it is assumed that the 1860 census listing is in error. He died Unknown. 28. Eliza Jane Lane was born in Mar 1833 in Orange County, IN. Family records listed her birth year as 1835. In the 1900 census, she is listed as born March, 1833, age 67. Given that Mary Ann Lane was born Feb 1 1836, this date is more reasonable. She appeared on the 1840 census in Orange County, IN. She appeared on the 1850 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. Starting in 1860, she appeared in the Kansas censuses. She died on Mar 24 1912 in Homewood Township, Franklin County, KS and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Osage County, KS. Gary Lane found the following in the Lyndon KS Carnegie Library, Osage County cemeteries records: Eliza J. L. Alward, b. 1865, d. 24 March 1912, age 77 years, on same stone as Calvin Leonard. Eliza married Alfred Alward after Calvin's death. In the 1910 census they were living in Homewood Township, Franklin County, KS. They presumably were still living there when she died in 1912. Gary was unable to find an obituary for her. She was married to Calvin Leonard on Dec 15 1853 in Orange County, IN. Calvin Leonard was born on Aug 2 1813 in North Carolina. He appeared on the 1860 census in Franklin County, KS. It lists the family as living in Centropolis Township, Franklin County, KS. He appeared on the 1870 census in Franklin County, KS. It lists the family as living in Franklin Township, Pomona PO, house 36, John and Lucy Leonard in same, in house 33. Other residents are Calvin Leonard age 21 (nephew?), farm laborer, born in IN; Annie Morris age 13, at school, born in IN; and Henry Massey age 10, at school, born in TX. The census shows another Calvin Leonard age 55, wife Jane age 45, in Ottawa Township, Pomona PO Reel K-29, page 117. Other residents are Annie Leonard (not Morris) age 13, at school, born in IN ("Cousin Ann" brought with them as an infant from IN to KS and raised by them); Lee Wood age 21, farm laborer (not Calvin Leonard), and Henry Massey age 10, born in IN (not TX). This is clearly a duplicate and a mix-up, but it isn't clear which is right. He died on Dec 11 1891 in Quenomo, Osage County, KS. Calvin Leonard Estate, Probate Court, Osage County, KS, Case no. 2033. Property SW 1/4 Sec. 28 T 16, R 17 Junction Township. Proceeds to son William Franklin Leonard and wife Eliza Jane. Also lots 2 and 4, Block 4, Cloud Addition, Quenemo, also NW 1/4 Sec. 28, T 16, R 17, D. K. Lord, Executor. Will executed Dec 26 1888, son used the name Frank Leonard and lived in Lebo, KS in 1891. A Calvin Leonard obituary is in the Peoples Herald, Lyndon, KS for Thursday 24 Dec 1891. It says that his first wife was Miss Lucy Jiles (Giles), married in 1840 in Orange County, IN. They had two sons, one killed in the war (Civil War) by bush-whackers and the other, Franklin Leonard, now living in Coffey County (this was his heir). Calvin was born in North Carolina, moved to Indiana when 14 years old, moved to Kansas in 1859 (Pioneer settlement book says 1857). Married Eliza Jane Lane in 1853. Lived in Franklin County until 1871 when he moved to Osage County northwest of Lyndon, until a few years ago when he moved into Lyndon. However, Eliza was reported as living in Quenemo in Rebecca Lane's estate papers. The Lyndon report is taken from the Quenomo Republican paper, thus northwest of Lyndon was actually Quenemo. Franklin County deed records show Calvin is grantor on 22 Sep 1859, of Lots N2, Sec. 33 T15S R20, Book A, P. 244; and grantee on 7 Jun 1858, Lots 3 and 4, Sec. 33, T15, R20, Book A, p. 444. This is about 2.5 miles east of Norwood in a rural area. Apparently there was some effort to establish a town there. This shows Calvin was in the area as early as 1858. The History of the State of Kansas, 1883, for Franklin County, p. 602 states that in 1857 quite a large number had settle on West Branch ... and on the East Branch of Ottawa Creek, Esquire Merchant, Calvin and John Leonard, and John Heek. She was married to Andrew A. Alward on Feb 6 1893 in Quenemo, Osage County, KS. Andrew A. Alward was born in 1831. His birth date was taken from the 1900 census where he is listed as born Nov. 1830 in Indiana, age 69. The age on his marriage license supports this year. He appeared on the 1900 census in Homewood Township, Franklin County, KS. He died Unknown in Kansas. 29. Mary Ann Lane was born on Feb 1 1836 in Orange County, IN. She appeared on the 1840 census in Orange County, IN. She appeared on the 1850 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. She appeared on the 1860 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. She appeared on the 1880 census in Orange County, IN. It lists Mary with children Michael, Melinda, Rebecca, and Jonathan, and two stepsons, James and George. There is also an Emma Marlette, age 22, presumably a stepdaughter, but not certain. Cloe Anna (Lane) Beatty states in a July 1965 letter to Gary Lane that Mary Marlette went from Orange Co., IN to Ottawa, KS to live with Martin in his last years. She is in the 1910 Ottawa directory. Mary Marlette bought land from Thomas Lane on Oct 13 1889, Book 39, p. 507, S 1/2 SW 1/4 Sec. 2, 1S 2W. She died on Jun 18 1912 in Ottawa, Franklin County, KS and was buried in Lincoln Cemetery, Coffey County, KS. Mary Marlette's obituary in the Ottawa Weekly Herald for Thursday, Jul 20 1912 says she died that morning, so the July 18 date may be wrong. It goes on to say that she died at Martin V. Lane's house at 834 Burrough St., Ottawa, KS, she was survived by three children, Delilia Brent of Lebo, KS, Isaac Marlette of West Baden, IN, and Martin V. Marlette of Louisville, KY, and she came to Kansas 4 years ago to maker her home with her brother. This means she came about 1908 when she was in her early 70's. She was probably buried at Lincoln Cemetery in Lebo because Valentine and Delilia Brent were living there at the time of her death. She was married to William Compton on Jan 13 1853 in Orange County, IN. William Compton was born on Mar 19 1830. He died on Feb 9 1857 and was buried in Moores Ridge Cemetery, Orange County, IN. She was married to James N. Marlette in 1855 in Orange County, IN. James N. Marlette was born on May 5 1827 in Tennessee. His gravestone says d. 12 Apr 1875, age 47y 11m 7d. His birth date is calculated from this. He appeared on the 1860 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. It lists James (33), Mary (26), Nancy J. (13), William (12), George (8), Malinda (6), James (3), Sarah J. Compton (6), and Delila Compton (4). It is uncertain as to which children belong to which marriages. He died on Apr 12 1875 in Orange County, IN and was buried in Marlett Family Cemetery, Orange Co., IN. The Marlett family cemetery is at Sec. 2, T1S, R2W (abandoned) in a field on the William Marlett farm on state road 145. Mary Ann Lane and James N. Marlette had the following children: 67 i. Jonathan E. Marlette. 30. Martin Van Buren Lane was born on Feb 2 1837 in Orange County, IN. He was born the same year the Martin Van Buren became President of the U.S. (1837-1841). He appeared on the 1840 census in Orange County, IN. He appeared on the 1850 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. He appeared on the 1860 census in Jackson Township, Orange County, IN. He immigrated about 1885 to Kansas. The earliest record of Martin in Kansas is the 1885 census. He was living in Quenemo, age 47, single, occupation farmer. Martin is listed as an heir of his mother, Rebecca Lane, in Sep 1887 and living in Quenemo at the time. He died on May 13 1916 in Ottawa, Franklin County, KS and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Osage County, KS. Martin's estate was settled on Apr 27 1918, brother J. S. Lane executor. Heirs were J. A. Lane, son, age 50, of 1175 Hudson St., KC, KS; Philip, 48, and Monroe, 46, of West Baden; Melvena Livengood, 40, Perry, Ollie, Lulu, Charles and Leta, all of French Lick. Total estate was $307 in personal property. His obituary was in the Ottawa Herald on Tuesday, May 16 1916. His address is given as Hamblin St. between 8th and 9th, so he apparently moved from the Burroughs St. house where he lived for many years (and where sister Mary Ann Lane Marlette died). It states that he had lived in Ottawa for about 15 years, so he must have moved from Quenemo to Ottawa about 1901. Martin is buried next to his sister, Eliza Jane Lane Leonard Alward and her first husband, Calvin Leonard. He was married to Martha Shively (daughter of Philip Shively and Penelope Busick) on Feb 13 1862 in French Lick, Orange County, IN. Cousins Levi and Martin V. Lane married sisters Elizabeth and Martha Shively. He was divorced from Martha Shively before 1885 in Orange County, IN. According to information passed down in the Charles Lane family, Martin V. Lane deserted Martha and the family sometime before the turn of the century and "went West". Charles said that this caused him to leave school in order to help his mother support the family. Mona Robinson stated in her Sep 26 1999 genealogy column "Family Tree Leaves" in the Bloomington Herald-Times that Indiana was reported to be a divorce mill in the middle 1800's because of easy divorce laws and short residency requirements. The petitioner only had to place an ad in a newspaper where the action was filed; the spouse was not notified until after the divorce. Martha Shively was born on May 14 1846 in Prospect, Orange County, IN. She appeared on the 1850 census in French Lick Township, Orange County, IN. She appeared on the 1860 census in French Lick Township, Orange County, IN. Martha sold to Napoleon Pierce on Mar 2 1888, lots 1,2,8 in New Prospect, also undivided 2/3 of undivided 1/2 of SW SW Sec. 22, 2N 2W and E 1/2 of NW of Sec. 27, same T and R, and W 1/2 of NE of Sec. 27, same T and R, except for 15 acres sold by Philip Shively for the site of New Prospect town and for meeting house and graveyard. All of said land being subject to life estate of Penelope Shively, widow of Philip, Deceased. A judgment was filed against Martha on Jan 17 1891, Book 41, p. 326- 327, for $110.26 by Daniel N. Long, prosecuting attorney, for part of S 1/2 of SW, Sec. 6, pt. SW of SE of Sec. 6 and NW NW, Sec. 7 2N 2W. Napoleon Pierce paid $49.65 at sheriff's auction on Sep 14 1889 and turned over the land to Martha. She died on May 15 1920 in French Lick, Orange County, IN and was buried in Ames Chapel, Orange County, IN. The family Bible shows her date of death as May 15 1920. Mary is listed as a widow in the 1885 census, so the 1886 date is probably correct. He was divorced from Mary M. Johns on Sep 1 1902 in Franklin County, KS. Mary M. Johns was born about 1844. The clipping is dated 10 Nov 1910, but the name of the newspaper is not recorded. It states that John and Lucy came to Kansas in 1865 and lived in Norwood until they moved to Burlington in 1901. She was married to John Leonard (son of Bailey Leonard and Lucinda [Unknown]) on Jan 6 1856 in Orange County, IN. John Leonard was born on Oct 28 1833 in Orange County, IN. William's obituary is in the Melvern Review for Thursday, 23 Jul 1925. The reason it was so late is because the paper's linotype broke a gear and only scant news was published the week before. The obituary lists out-of-town attendees at the funeral. They include some of Williams siblings and two of J. S. Lane's daughters. It goes on to say that the Hobsons moved to Kansas in 1863. He was in Lawrence, KS at the time of the Aug 21 1863 Quantrell raid that burned the town and killed many people.
