FIRST GENERATION 1. Thomas Stackhouse was born Unknown. He died in February 1791 in Pelsall, Staffordshire, England. He was married to Elizabeth Owen on December 21, 1767 in England. Elizabeth Owen was born Unknown. She died in February 1792 in Pelsall, Staffordshire, England. Thomas Stackhouse and Elizabeth Owen had the following children: 2 i. Maria Stackhouse (born Unknown). 3 ii. Elizabeth Stackhouse (born Unknown). 4 iii. Hannah Stackhouse (born Unknown). 5 iv. William Stackhouse (born Unknown). 6 v. Thomas Stackhouse (born Unknown). 7 vi. Hugh Stackhouse (born about 1769). SECOND GENERATION 2. Maria Stackhouse was born Unknown. She died Unknown. She was married to Edward Martin on August 13, 1810 in England. Edward Martin was born in 1788 in England. He died in 1843. 3. Elizabeth Stackhouse was born Unknown. She died Unknown. 4. Hannah Stackhouse was born Unknown. She died Unknown. 5. William Stackhouse was born Unknown. She died Unknown. 6. Thomas Stackhouse was born Unknown. He died Unknown. 7. Hugh Stackhouse was born about 1769 in Pelsall, Staffordshire, England. He was christened on December 3, 1769 in England. Lisa Sheppard reports that, while several researchers have indicated that Hugh did come to the United States, she has found no evidence. One researcher reports that he settled in Brooklyn, NY, where he died about 1837. Paul Nicholls, a British researcher, reports that the family seems to have disappeared from all English records around 1816. However, Hugh Jr. is reported as being christened July 6, 1813 in the Methodist Church at Orangeville, IN (when he was 9 years old). If he didn't come to Indiana with his parents, who did he come with? He died Unknown. The Lost River DAR transcriptions from August 12, 1937 show "Stackhouse, Hugh b. Leicester, England 179? d. about 1870. His wife Jenkins, d. several years prior to Hugh. Graves had markers". However, James E. Lane visited the cemetery in 1988 and found a grave stone for Hugh Stackhouse that reported him to be "67 Yrs. 28 Ds." old when he died (the stone had deteriorated to the point that it was not possible to tell whether it was 26 or 28 days, but 28 days seemed the more likely). This age doesn't match the father Hugh, but does match the son Hugh. This is likely the son Hugh's grave stone, even though he was not reported in the DAR transcriptions. This would also mean that the DAR reference to wife Jenkins probably refers to Sarah Rowe. He was married to Mary Berrington. Mary Berrington was born Unknown in England. Her name is uncertain. Carlin Conrad reports it as Sarah Jenkins and the Higgins cemetery transcription for Hugh Stackhouse seems to support this. However, there are questions about this transcription (see the notes for husband Hugh and son Hugh Jr.). Lisa Sheppard reports her name as Mary and states that several researchers believe her maiden name was Berrington, which is more likely given how frequently the name was used in subsequent generations. She died Unknown. Hugh Stackhouse and Mary Berrington had the following children: 8 i. Charles Stackhouse (born about 1792). 9 ii. Henry Stackhouse (born about 1794). 10 iii. Jane Stackhouse (born about 1796). 11 iv. Henry Stackhouse (born on December 26, 1797). 12 v. William B. Stackhouse (born on January 1, 1800). 13 vi. Jane Stackhouse (born on June 28, 1802). 14 vii. The Springs Valley Herald (July 11, 1940) reported "John A. Stackhouse, son of Hugh and Morning Dalton Stackhouse, was born in Orangeville Township, Orange County, Indiana, January 21, 1859 and went to his eternal crowning July 8, 1940 on the farm where he had lived for more that half a century, near West Baden Springs, Ind. His life began on a farm and his entire life was spent amid rural surroundings not far from the scenes of his birthplace. He prepared himself in his youth, as a teacher in the public schools of Orange County and in conjunction with his farming career, he taught school for a period of twenty-one consecutive years and was classed as being a good and successful instructor of youth to which many of his former pupils will testify as they learned of his passing. On September 10, 1885 he was united in marriage to Lucy E. Pipher with whom he lived happily for forty-six years, until her translation February 24, 1932. To this union three daughters and two sons were born, all of whom survive him. While yet a young man before reaching his majority, he was converted and united with the Methodist Church at Nelson Chapel which charge soon thereafter became a part of the Ames Chapel church to which his membership was later transferred. This church today mourns his passing where he labored and worshiped for so many years and so faithfully in various capacities until the afflictions of failing health and loss of vision interfered. For some years he was totally blind, an affliction he bore with much patience and fortitude. He was a public spirited citizen and his life was quite extensive, he was Cashier of the West Baden National Bank for a period of twenty-one years from 1904 to 1925. Here he added to an already extensive acquaintance, making many friends who today gratefully remember his service to them and their community. He was possessed of a cheerful disposition, yet firm in his convictions of right and wrong and having a moral judgment of unfailing loyalty to right conduct before men. After his retirement from the bank he gave his entire attention to the farming interest and desired a well deserved rest from public life. However, this brief respite was soon broken and he was again called into public service when he was elected in 1926 to the office of Trustee of French Lick Township and to which he was reelected in 1930, for four more years, when his service ended in this connection. The few years of life remaining to him have been given to his farm, the lure of which still made its appeal and which was the source of contentment to him, throughout a long life of more that four score years, when he ceased from his labors and left a life full of good works to follow him. The surviving children are Mrs. Sam Charles, Mrs. George H. Pruett, Mrs. Louie Leonard, Floyd Stackhouse and John A. Stackhouse, with fifteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Also two sisters, Mrs. William Toliver and Mrs. John Phillips, all of whom with his wide circle of friends, will mourn his passing." He was buried in Ames Chapel Cemetery, Orange County, IN. He was married to Lucinda E. Pipher (daughter of Lindus Herbert Pipher and Elizabeth Ann Lindley) on September 10, 1885 in Orange County, IN (book C-7, page 498). Lucinda E. Pipher was born on August 15, 1865 in Orange County, IN. She appeared on the census in 1870 in Orangeville Township, Orange County, IN. She died on February 24, 1932 in Orange County, IN. The Springs Valley Herald (February 25, 1932) reported "Mrs. Lucy Stackhouse, wife of John A. Stackhouse, trustee of French Lick Township, died suddenly yesterday morning (February 24, 1932) at her home north of West Baden. Death was attributed to heart failure. Mrs. Stackhouse was 67 years of age. Mrs. Stackhouse had not been well for some time, but her condition was not considered serious. She had gone to the nearby barn to do the morning milking when the heart attack came, and she died before assistance could be rendered. The news of her death was a severe shock to her friends in West Baden and French Lick, as well as in Orange County. She was well-known throughout this district. Survivors of Mrs. Stackhouse, besides her husband, are two sons, John A. Jr. of Indianapolis and Floyd of West Baden; three daughters, Mrs. Lois Ham of Orangeville, Mrs. G. H. Pruett of French Lick and Mrs. Sam Charles of West Baden. She is also survived by five sisters, a number of grandchildren and other relatives. She was a fine Christian woman and was held in esteem by all who knew her. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 1:00 o'clock at the Ames Chapel M. E. Church, according to present plans. Interment will be made in the adjoining cemetery." The Springs Valley Herald (March 3, 1932) reported "Mrs. Lucy E. Pipher Stackhouse, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. and Elizabeth Ann (nee: Lindley) Pipher was born in the southern part of Orangeville Township, August 15, 1865 and departed this life February 24, 1932. She was united in marriage to John A. Stackhouse, September 10, 1885. To this union were born five children: Mrs. Effie E. Charles of West Baden, Mrs. Grace A. Pruett of French Lick, Mrs. Lois E. Ham of Orleans, Floyd T. She leave to mourn their loss besides the broken hearted husband and children, four sisters, Mrs. Fannie Stine of Orleans, Mrs. Carrie Grigsby of West Baden, Mrs. Emma Campbell and Mrs. Dora Webb of French Lick, fifteen grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. For the past forty-four years Mr. and Mrs. Stackhouse had resided on their farm two miles north of West Baden and their home has become a landmark in the community. During these years Mrs. Stackhouse has endeared herself to her neighbors and acquaintances. In her girlhood days, Mrs. Stackhouse was converted and united with the M. E. Church at Ames. She has these many years been a faithful Christian. No one can reflect upon her devoted life without feeling that there is such a thing as a spirit-filled life. The home, the church and society lose heavily when such a life has been taken. There are however, many compensations. Her loved ones and friends feel that she is the happier and we are all made better in heart and richer in soul when we reflect on her Christian life. As a wife and mother she was always at her best, striving with her sympathy, kindness, thoughtfulness and love to fill her place in the home and community. She has fallen asleep, but has left us a wonderful legacy, the influence of her daily Christian walk. She had courage to be true to her convocations, but charity for all. Her going has caused great sorrow and grief to the husband and children, but after all we do not morn as those who have no hope, for we have the assurance that, Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord." In 1888 Brother and Sister Mathers united with the Mathers Chapel M.E. Church. Some years after they transferred their membership to Wesley Chapel. In his quiet unassuming way he exemplified the Christian life as a friend and neighbor, he was the express image of his father. For more than 34 years he was an honored member of the I.O.O.F Lodge No. 113. To those who have known our brother so long it seems almost a tragedy to give up so good a man. But God has his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. The end of the journey was peaceful and calm. An honest clean upright life that honors God and believes in the brotherhood of man can only end in victory. Today the I.O.O.F. extend our sympathy and prayers to the bereaved family, as a brotherhood we are assured when the guardian of the Grand Lodge on high informed the Noble Grand there was an alarm at the gate, the answer came swing wide ye gates and be ye lifted up ye everlasting doors, and let him in. His name is transferred from Orange Lodge No. 113 to the Grand Lodge on high. He has left a rich heritage to his children, a life lived worthy of imitation. Charlie, to you he has been a loving Father and Safe Counselor, you will miss him. I pray that his mantle may fall on you and to you Bertha and Lula may you be cheered with the thought of a happy reunion with father and mother, where parting will be no more and to you Marion and Maggie may the memories of a happy home and youthful day well spent, when the family circle was not broken, inspire you to press on until the family circle will again be reunited. The 11th of March at 10:30 A.M. our brother was not, for God took him. He was 72 years, 3 months and 5 days. He leaves three children, Mrs. Bertha Felknor, Mrs. Lula Brown, son Charles and three grandchildren, also one brother Marion and Mrs. Maggie Noblitt and many friends to mourn his departure. Family Members: Census year and location, and other facts where appropriate. 2. The spelling of names in obituaries, newspaper articles and census records is often incorrect. Early censuses were done verbally, with the census taker often spelling the name based on how it was pronounced. The spelling could be different in every census. The same thing occurred in obituaries and newspaper articles. However, in most cases these items are reported in this document just as they were written. REPORT INFORMATION Created by: Robert E.
