Herbert Males
Mayor of Evansville, Indiana
1926 - 1930

On top of Stringtown Hill on the Loop Road there a a water reservoir with a capacity of 20,000,000 gallons, belonging to the people of Evansville.

On United States Highway 41, a short distance from the city limits, there is a $250,000 municipal airport belonging also to the people.

On all the street corners there are signs giving street names and numbers, enabling the people to more easily find their destinations.

These and many other equally fine improvements were accomplished during the mayorship of Herbert Males, who served from January 4, 1926, to January 4, 1930. The reservoir, which assures at all times an unlimited supply of pure water, and the overhauling of the water works proper on the Ohio River, cost approximately $1,300,000. The sum was realized through city control of the water works. The airport, one of the finest in this part of the country, was built at an Original cost of $150,000. Today, Evansville is known as the "Air Crossroads of America" and the government pays annually to local government employees approximately $33,000 in salaries.

Mayor Males started his political career during Mayor Benjamin Bosse's time as a member of the Safety Board. He had previously been a salesman for the Neitert Produce Company, where he had worked from 1890, at the age of fourteen years, until 1919 when he became manager of the local Chero Cola (now Nehi) Bottling Works. He resigned from the Safety Board in 1918 to run for Sheriff of Vanderburgh County on the Republican ticket. He was elected and served from 1919 until 1923. He was for many years Republican County Chairman.

Mayor Males was born in Evansville July 19, 1875, the son of Thornton and Emma Males. He attended the Public Schools and Lockyear's Business College. He is now engaged in business under the name of Males Insurance Agency, located at 19 S.E. Third Street.

He is a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Shrine and lives at 1615 Lincoln Avenue. He is a member of the First Evangelical Church.

He has one son, John C. Males.
