    Son of James N. and Lilly A. Smith; born November 16, 1895, Blackford County, Indiana. Farm laborer. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army September 9, 1916, Marion, Indiana; sent to Columbus Barracks, Ohio. Transferred to Camp Douglas, Arizona; assigned to Company M, 35th Infantry. Overseas in June, 1917. Participated in battles of Soissons, St. Mihiel and Argonne. Wounded in action in Argonne Forest, and died October 6, 1918. (exact place unknown.)
