    Son of Matthew W. and Elizabeth Mack Smith; born January 14, 1894, Madison, Indiana. Shipping Clerk. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army in August 1917, Louisville, Kentucky. Sent to Camp Taylor, Kentucky; assigned to 336th Infantry. Stricken with pneumonia he was confined to the hospital the date his regiment left for overseas. Died of pneumonia March 29, 1918, Camp Taylor, Kentucky. Buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, North Madison, Indiana.
