General Orders No. 15, Headquarters 1st Field Artillery Brigade, Camp Meade, Maryland, September 20, 1919: The Brigade Commander cites the following officers and men for gallantry in action and devotion to duty: .....Sergeant Verlas N. Richardson, Battery C, 5th Field artillery, while under heavy shell fire, established communication to his Battery Out Post on Hill 240, in the Argonne and with rare courage and devotion to duty stayed at the O. P. under enemy fire until ordered to seek shelter by his superior officer.....By command of Brigadier General McIntyre: F. J. Dunigan, Major, Field Artillery, Adjutant. Record: Born February 4, 1892, Morgantown; son of Newton Asbury and Letitia E. (Brickey) Richardson. Enlisted May 25, 1917, Fort Logan, Colorado. Assigned to Battery C, 5th Field Artillery. Corporal, December 12, 1917; sergeant, November 28, 1918. Overseas July 30, 1917 - September 5, 1919. Discharged September 27, 1919. Married Anna Sheets. Son, Raymond Charles; daughter, Veragene. Junction City, Kansas.
