F., France, July 14, 1918: The Division Commander cites the following officers and men for conspicuous devotion to duty:.......First Lieutenant Wayne W. Schmidt, 28th Infantry, displayed high qualities of courage and leadership during the attack, in which he continually exposed himself to heavy fire, encouraging his men during consolidation, with utter disregard to danger, until wounded.....By command of Major General Bullard: H. K. Loughry, Major, Field Artillery, National Army, Division Adjutant. Record: Born December 5, 1894, Martinsville; son of George F. and Maletta (Schnaiter) Schmidt. Student, Indiana University. Entered service August 15, 1917. Previous service in Indiana National Guard, 1911-1915. Assigned to 28th Infantry. Second lieutenant, Infantry Section, Officers' Reserve Corps, August 16, 1917; active duty August 15, 1917; second lieutenant, Infantry, Regular Army, February 14, 1918; first lieutenant (temporary), October 26, 1917; first lieutenant, April 10, 1919. Overseas October 28, 1918, Cantigny. Assistant professor military science and tactics, Indiana University. Retired October 26, 1919; active duty, November 1-30, 1919. Married Laura M. Levering. Son, Wayne W., Jr. Indianapolis.
