Distinguished-Service Cross. General Orders No. 37, War Department, March 11, 1919: He volunteered to carry a message to the battalion commander notifying him that our barrage was falling short. Crossing a valley swept by shell and machine-gun fire, he swam the icy Meuse River and succeeded in delivering his message in time to avoid further casualties.

Overseas April 9, 1918 - March 12, 1919. Battles: St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, Verdun. Discharged march 27, 1919.
