James Shelton
James Shelton, a well-known farmer of Skelton Township, was born January 22, 1825, the second son in this family of children -David (deceased), James, Elizabeth (Mrs. Thomas Boyd), Stephen and Thomas B. who were born to John and Nancy (Dickinson) Shelton, natives respectively of Virginia and Indiana. James Shelton lived at home in youth, receiving only such education as could be obtained in the country school of that day. His marriage with Miss Minerva Polk was solemnized August 9, 1846, and to them were born four children: Mary E. (Mrs. Commodore Kelly), Rebecca, Nancy Ellen (Mrs. Andrew Kelly) and Josiah. Mrs. Shelton died December 25, 1861, and for his second wife Mr. Shelton married Mrs. Susan (Mills) Kelly on December 31, 1862, and to this union these children have been born, named as follows: Elmira, Stephen H., Eugene, Edna and Maud (deceased). Mr. Shelton owns 160 acres of good land, is a Democrat in politics, and his wife is of the General Baptist faith. They are among the township's best citizens and universally respected.
