INDEX
1917-1921
Following
the onset of hostilities during World War I, non-naturalized "Enemy
Aliens" by definition, were required to register with United States authorities
as a national security measure. Under the provisions of a Presidential
Proclamation of April 6, 1917, non-naturalized female aliens were likewise
registered as an additional national security measure that included those women
of American birth that were married to aliens born in one of the countries at
war with the United States. Registrants include school children, divinity
students, former United States soldiers and sailors, Roman Catholic nuns, the
elderly and the infirm. For the State of Kansas the registered aliens represent
a broad cross-section of the German-born population of the State. The series contains original affidavits of
registration that record personal information about each registrant, their
photograph affixed to the majority of documents, and the registrants
fingerprints. Complete files for

Rehling's record gives his parents' names.
--- Spelling doesn't appear to be uniform here so look carefully through these
names. Some surnames are spelled differently but may be the same. Some possible
examples of this in this listing are BREMECKE/BRENECKE, HEIGELE/HEIGLE
SEEFKEN/SEIFKEN and SAMP/SOMP. These individuals are most likely related but
the records show a different spelling for their surnames. Married women's
maiden names are included in this listing. They appear after the "City of
Origin" for each woman.

Center in Kansas City include all the information listed here.
--- This list is not an indictment against those who appear on it. The United
States was at war and there was a feeling of distrust of those who still spoke
German or showed any kind of pride in their German heritage. As American
soldiers began to die on the battlefields of Europe this distrust turned into
open anger and sometimes even violence. The Enemy Alien Registration is more a
sign of the anger and paranoia of the era than a listing of people under
suspect.
