Peaks Mill Christian Church and Cemetery

The Frankfort Roundabout on November 28, 1891 published the following:
"At Peaks Mill, the new Christian Church will be dedicated tomorrow morning".
The dedication sermon will be preached by Rev. George Darsie of this city at

10:30 o'clock.  The Rev. W. S. Giltner, pastor, and Rev. Polk South will assist
in the services.  The public is invited to attend, and the congregation expects
to feed all who are present.

The history of Peaks Mill Christian Church began much earlier than November 29, 1891.

A little congregation of Christians had a meeting house on the west bank of the Elkhorn Creek
in the northern section of Franklin County. On July 31,1849 James and Mary Church deeded
property to trustees, Lewis L. Sullivan, Alexander B. Bacon and James Graham for a meeting
house to be built.  For many years the Pleasant Hill Christian Church played an active roll in the
religious life of the community.

Then some of the congregation wanted a meeting house across the creek at Peaks Mill, which
split the Pleasant Hill Christian Church. The remaining members of the Pleasant Hill Christian
Church moved to Swallowfield and under the direction of James South, organized the Church of
Christ. Trustees for the newly formed congregation of the Peaks Mill Christian Church were;
Lew Church, Zack Church, Sutter Stafford, Charles Jackson and M. R. Pierce. Laurence Hannon
deeded a lot, which set the wheels in motion for the construction of a meeting house for the Peaks
Mill Christian Church.  It is said the rocks used for building the foundation of the church were
hauled from the Elkhorn Creek on mule wagons and sleds.

The  Peaks Mill Church Cemetery is located beside the church.  The oldest tombstone in the
cemetery, is that of Augusta Jackson, daughter of John C. and Mary Jackson, where her death
date is inscribed as June 20, 1880.
