Locust Grove News - Marriage of Jeff BROWN and Miss Carrie CHILDERS, Wednesday, January 20, at the home of Robt. Childers by Rev. Wm. McMillian; honeymooned at Cincinnati. Attendants were George SANDERS and Miss Armanda BROWN, sister of the groom.

Marriage of Wm. CUNNINGHAM, 21, and Miss Delphine CHARBONNEAU, 18, both of Williamstown, quietly eloped to Cincinnati Tuesday morning and were married. Groom is nephew of Dan CUNNINGHAM of this place and has been employed for 3 years in the mechanical department of this paper. Miss Dell is the daughter of D. J. CHARBONNEAU, for many years engaged in the grocery business.

In Memory: Mary F. BURGESS, familiarly known as Aunt Polly, died at the home of her niece and adopted daughter, Mrs. Mrs. H. R. POWELL, December 27, 1891. Aged 78 years, 6 months and 3 days. Methodist.

Born to the wife of W. R. ELLISTON on the 26th, a girl.

Married at the residence of the bride's father, near Crittenden, this county, Tuesday, 21st, at one o'clock, Edgar WHALEY and Miss Harriet MILEDAM.

Rev. HILL resigned from the Williamstown Baptist Church after five years service according to Resolutions published in this issue.

Grant County's candidate for Commonwealths Attorney, M. D. Lafayette GRAY was born in Grant County, Kentucky on the 20th of November 1853; English, Scotch, Irish, and French ancestors; oldest of eight children (six boys and two girls) born to Thomas and Martha GRAY (nee DeJARNETTE). Thomas GRAY was born in Bourbon County, Kentucky, April 19, 1827, and Martha GRAY was born in Harrison County, Kentucky, February 10, 1829. Thomas Gray was the son of William GRAY who served in the War of 1812 and was wounded at the Battle of the Thames, and Martha DeJARNETTE was the youngest daughter of Abijah DeJARNETTE, for many years a prominent citizen of Harrison County.

"Mark" [Marcus] moved with his family to Owen County in 1866. On December 24, 1883, he married Miss Theresa KACHELHOFER, a native of Berne, Switzerland, who, at 10, crossed the ocean and located with her parents in Alabama. One child, Caroline Martha, born November 30, 1887.

Sudden Death, Monday, of W. L. COLLINS of Crittenden, of LaGrippe; was born in Pendleton County in 1825 and is a son of Richard and Lucy COLLINS. Richard COLLINS, a Virginia native and life-long farmer, moved to Madison County, Kentucky first. W. L. graduated from the Baptist Theological College at Covington. Engaged in merchandise business at Sherman from 1851 to 1870. Then farmed, owned one of the finest farms in the county at his death. In 1860 he married Miss Alice M. LINDSEY, daughter of Honorable O. J. LINDSEY. Four children: Richard L., Marguerite, Guy W., and Carl C. Always a Democrat and for many years a devoted Christian church member. Exemplary husband, father...who did much good and was greatly loved.

Knoxville News: Marriage of Huston ELLIOTT, about 55, and Miss Lizzie CLARK, 18. "It is the second adventure for the groom who is a lusty old veteran of the late war."

Corinth News: Born to the wife of R. T. GENTRY, a boy.

Marriage of Miss Clara BRACHT and W. R. BRASFIELD of Lexington, horse breeder and dealer, last Friday at the Lexington Second Presbyterian Church. She is sister of Mrs. Lilly B. SMITH, our postmistress, and Mrs. O. P. ELLISTON, Al, Gus and Brutus BRACHT of this county. Maid of honor was Mrs. Lilly SMITH, a tall blonde with a profusion of burnished hair, and best man was Will SAMUEL. Married by Reverend Mr. FULTON. Senator NEEDHAM is guardian of the bride.

Divorce suit of Mary ZINN against Dr. W. J. ZINN of Cincinnati last week. Witnesses named.

Cartersville News: Death of Rev. Cornelius SKIRVIN, 48, on January 26; suffered for five years; church member of 33 years; and minister for 20 years.

Mt. Pleasant News: The many friends of J. G. EPPERSON are sorry to hear of his death.

Corinth News: Death of J. G. EPPERSON at his home here Thursday of consumption. Leaves a wife to whom he had been married less than a year. Buried Saturday by Oddfellows and Knights of Pythias, to which he belonged. Funeral at the Methodist Church by his old pastor Mr. NORTHCUTT.

Obituary for Cornelius SKIRVIN who died the 26th of January 1892, was born the 20th of Mach 1844. Member of the Baptist Church at 11; a Mason for 20 years.

Charley ADKINS and Miss Candace CASON, both of Sherman, were married in Cincinnati last Wednesday. Bride is the daughter of the late Louis CASON.

A new post office has been established at Blanchett station with Mr. BLACK as postmaster.

Death of Mrs. L. HULETT at the Williamstown home of H. Clay WHITE early Wednesday morning of LaGrippe and pneumonia; leaves a son, her only child [not named]. Her remains will be taken to Burlington, Boone County, Kentucky, today, where she will be interred with the remainder of her family.

Issued at the February term, Monday 8: Will of the late R. L. COLLINS admitted. Mrs. Elizabeth COLLINS qualified as executrix.

Corinth News: Owen County furnishes another sensational killing this week. At a dance Tuesday night near Coney, Ben WHITE of New Columbus engaged in a difficulty with Gus NEAL and finally shot him severely in the hip, whereupon White was instantly killed, presumably by John Wesley NEAL. Bad whiskey was at the bottom of the trouble.

Petitions filed with Grant Court of Common Pleas by Laura and R. B. CUMMINS and Virginia and B. F. VALLANDINGHAM, husbands and wives.

Biographical sketch of J. Kinsey HUTCHERSON of Corinth, born in Harrison County, near Cynthiana in 1835. His grandfather, J. Y. HUTCHERSON came from Virginia to Harrison County, when the father of Kinsey--James Y. was about 12 years of age. James Y. HUTCHERSON married Lucy RODGERS of Harrison County. Kinsey married in 1855 to Miss Mary E. HAYES of Harrison County; no children. Member of Colemansville, Kentucky Christian Church since 1860. Confederate who served under Morgan, Bragg, and Humphrey MARSHALL. His wife died and he married, secondly, Mrs. Ann HAYES nee SHEPARD, to whom six children were born, but two survive. Second wife died 1875. He moved to Corinth in 1877, establishing the Corinth Flouring Mills with his brother. In 1879 married, thirdly, Miss A. T. WHEAT of Corinth; five children.

Death of Honorable Adam RENAKER of Cynthiana, ex-Representative from Harrison County, Tuesday. Burial at that place.

Marriage of Miss Lizzie W. BAILY, formerly of Williamstown, late of Natural Bridge Station, Virginia, to M. F. WHARTON, an attorney of Luray, Virginia, at the Episcopal Church. She is the daughter of T. R. BAILY of this place. Married by brother of the groom, Rev. H. M. WHARTON of Baltimore. [reported in the February 8, 1892 Baltimore Sun]

Mt. Pleasant News: Married at the home of the bride's parents, Thursday, February 18, Lewis BURROUGHS to Miss Addie LAWRENCE. They took the train for northern Indiana.

Corinth News: Death of Reverend J. H. GUILL, a minister of the M. E. Church, South, of consumption here Wednesday. Funeral preached by Rev. M. S. CLARK Friday.

Died at the home of James SANFORD near Harrisburg, Owen County, Kentucky, Monday morning, February 16, Joseph [Joe] QUALTERS. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, March 1, 1871. His mother died when he was 8 months old. Father died when he was 13 years old, leaving him and 2 sisters. Lived with John LAYLE, Esq., last five years. Funeral preached by Reverend G. W. HILL at the Baptist Church in Harrisburg, Wednesday, February 18. Buried in the Odd Fellows Cemetery at Owenton.

A Mr. HENLEY, living at Locust Grove, is very low with consumption. His extreme poverty makes it a pitiable case, the neighbors having to keep him up. If he has relatives or friends and they want to see him alive and help to keep him, it is time they were showing up.

Mr. Morgan SIMPSON, of Williamstown, "has went and gone and got married" [to whom?]. He came to Doudton to find his choice.

Mason News:
1. Harvey BARNET, formerly of this place, died in Cincinnati last week. The remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Grassy Run on the 3rd.
2. Miss Kate MITTS of this place, and Mr. SEE of Georgetown, were married on the 3rd.

Flingsville News: Died on the 4th, Aunt Lydia Ann MANN, aged 76 years. Leaves four sons and two daughters. Member of M. E. Church. Funeral at her home by Rev. WYATT. Buried in the old family graveyard.

Heekin News: Married at the home of P. G. HARRISON on March 3 - John E. MARTIN to Miss Sarah B. SANDERS by Rev. P. H. HOFFMAN. Bride lived with Harrison family for about ten years.

Mt. Zion News: I. R. FRANKS [and wife] married last Tuesday; went to Queen City, returning home Wednesday evening for serenade.

Death of Dr. W. G. FRANK, quietly Wednesday at the Johnson House [in Williamstown]. Was 53 and in good health until 7 months ago. Leaves six children: Mrs. W. C. JOHNSON Jr., Dr. Ethel, Mrs. Rosa GARVEY, Carl, Batty, and Bain. Medical diploma from Transylvania University in Lexington. Practiced medicine until 1880, then took charge of Bank of Williamstown and later, Grant County Deposit Bank. Four brothers and 3 sisters survive him. His first wife was Miss Lutie COLLINS and his second wife Miss Rosa ROBINSON of Warsaw, Kentucky. Burial will be Friday in Williamstown Cemetery.

1. Mr. THOMPSON and Miss Annie MIDDLETON at the home of the bride's father near Knoxville, Ky., on the 17th by Rev. M. M. ARNOLD of the Short Creek Baptist Church.

3. David JOHNS and Miss Annie STEVENS will be married today at the Knoxville Baptist Church.

Stella EVANS, daughter of John W. EVANS of Stewartsville, died March 17, and is buried at the family grave yard at Salem Church on the 18th.

Death of Mrs. W. H. PENICK, near Mason, at her home last Friday evening after lingering illness. Funeral preached by Rev. G. W. HILL at Bethel Church, Sunday, 20th, followed by burial in Williamstown Cemetery.

Locust Grove News: Marriage of Hubert ABERNATHY to Miss Emma McKINZIE on the 23rd at the home of the bride's parents, Robert McKINZIE. Attendants were cousins of the bride, Robt. ABERNATHY and Miss Maggie McKINZIE. Married by Rev. G. W. HILL. Honeymoon to Cincinnati.

Mason News: Tom STROUDE died near this place on the 24th. Buried at Williamstown Cemetery.

Dry Ridge News: Marriage of J. A. JUDY and Miss Mary A. McKINSEY on the 23rd. Also Squire ABERNATHY's daughter and Mr. ABERNATHY.

Obituary of Mrs. W. H. PENICK, after lingering illness, at her home near Mason, this county, Friday, March 18, 1892, aged 65 years, 6 months, and 13 days. Was Methodist for more than 40 years. Funeral preached by Rev. G. W. HILL at Bethel Church near Mason. Burial in Williamstown.

Death of Mrs. Sarah ELLIOTT, of Hardscrabble, very suddenly at her home at that place Tuesday. She was one of the oldest women in the county.

Death of Thos. STROUD, an old land mark and old Union soldier, last Thursday after short illness. Brother of Mrs. Wm. STROUD and Mr. J. H. WEBB, of this place; was living with his second wife on a farm near Mason where he died. Buried in Williamstown Cemetery.

D. C. POINTS appointed guardian of Carl and Bady FRANK, Rosella, Genia, Edith, and Emmet HOGAN.

Edgar GARVEY, wife and children of Erlanger, attended the funeral of their father, Dr. [W. G.] FRANK, at this place last Friday.

Jeff TURLEY of Owenton, will marry April 6, Miss Nannie CASTLEMAN of Glencoe, at her home.

Death of B. H. STANSIFER, prominent business man, of pneumonia at his home near Bracht Station, Kenton County, Kentucky, April 14, 1892. Born in Boone County, December 9, 1840. Survived by aged father Abram and 5 or 6 sisters. In 1863, was married to Miss Julia A., daughter of W. L. ROBERTS, deceased. Wife and 2 adult sons survive. Funeral at his home by Elder Wm. RUPERT of Winchester, Saturday, and burial at Highland Cemetery.

Mason News: Mr. SMITH and Mrs. MARKSBERRY were privately married here one night last week. It is the third marriage for the groom and second for the bride.

In Memoriam: Miss Docia MITTS, daughter of E. J. and Fannie MITTS, was born February 11, 1869, and died April 2, 1892, after a protracted illness. United with Baptist Church at Grassy Run in 1888, where her funeral was held by Rev. Chas. BAGBY. Burial in the family burying ground at Grassy Run.

Obituary of Mrs. Lucy H. JOHNSON, aged widow of J. A. JOHNSON, who died very suddenly Sunday at her Main Street home of heart disease. Funeral preached Tuesday at the Methodist Church by Rev. P. H. HOFFMAN and burial in Williamstown Cemetery. Was past 71, having been born in Fayette County November 22, 1820. Her maiden name was CARTER; married early in life to John H. DOWNING, from whom the town of Downingsville gets its name. After their marriage they moved to this county and located on a farm at what is now Downingsville. Five children were born, three of whom died in infancy; the two who lived to maturity are Mrs. J. A. McPHERSON and Mrs. W. C. JOHNSON Sr., who died some years ago; Mr. DOWNING died in 1847 and in 1854 his widow was married to Dr. J. A. JOHNSON of this county, from which union resulted two children, namely, W. C. JOHNSON Jr. and Mrs. Etta THEOBALD, both of whom live in Williamstown vicinity. Mrs. Lucy JOHNSON has lived in Williamstown for thirty years.

Observer writes of visit to Gum Lick Springs, old site near Pendleton and Grant County line. Old hotel there originally owned by Henry WOODYARD, who sold it to Reuben [Rube] COLEMAN who died in 1861.

On June 18, 1841, Wm. S. UTTERBACK was robbed and severely attacked by two desperate men, Lyman CROUCH and Smith MAYTHE, who were taken by about 350 men from jail and were hung from a tree on July 10, 1841.

Uncle Jesse ROBINSON of Mason was in town last Saturday. He is now 90 years of age.

Death of Francis SIMON, of near Corinth, Friday; funeral by Rev. HENSLEY on Sunday at the old homestead where he spent the greater part of his life. Was born in the village of Piere, near Havre de Grace, in France in 1806; emigrated in 1830 to the island of Mortungue where he lived until 1836, when he came directly to Kentucky, locating where he has always resided; left briefly for New York to learn the English language; soon after he married Eliza, daughter of Jacob MUSSELMAN; his wife, 76, survives him. Nine children of whom only four survive. Was one of the largest land owners in the county.

Death of Mrs. Sallie A. ELLISTON, wife of W. P. ELLISTON, at her home in Elliston July 25, 1892; was 69 years, 7 months, and 7 days old; converted 50 years in the long to be remembered revival of 1842. Married on December 15, 1851 and issued four surviving children. Invalid for many years.

Hon. John W. GREEN, candidate for Circuit Judge of the 15th District [Grant's] gives biography: a native of Grant County, but has lived for many years in Owen County; about 20 when he enlisted as Confederate; 2nd and 1st Sergeant and 1st Lieutenant; lost a leg in August 1864 battle at Jonesborough, Georgia; returned to Owen and elected sheriff and later, county judge.

Born to the wife of J. L. LEE, on the 15th, a boy [in Williamstown].

There were three funerals in Williamstown last Friday: T. R. KENDALL of Sherman, A. THRELKELD's child of Mason, and Mrs. Clarence STROUD of Williamstown.

Marriage of Harry HARRISON to Miss EMMA BOYER at the bride's home, last Thursday, by Rev. P. H. HOFFMAN of the M. E. Church; honeymooned in Cincinnati and will live in Williamstown.

Death of Thomas Ross KENDALL, of Grant County, at his old home in Bourbon County; was brought to Williamstown Friday for his funeral at the courthouse and was buried in the city cemetery. From his 1887 biography in the Kentucky history: born in Harrison County, Kentucky in 1849, a son of Newton and Ann E. (Ross) KENDALL; his grandfather, Lewis KENDALL, a Virginia native, came early to Harrison County as a farmer and squire. His mother, a Missouri native, came to Kentucky at an early age; Scotch descent and granddaughter of old Dr. ROSS of Lexington; her grandmother was Phoebe NELSON of Harrison, who married in 1810. T. R. settled in Grant in 1859 and always a farmer; 450 acres of land. In 1875 married Georgie WILLIAMS of Bath County, Ky. She died in 1882, leaving one child, John Newton [15 years old now; will live with Mr. CHINN of Bourton County]. Democrat and member of the Christian Church.

Local Inkings [Williamstown News Column] - Esquire BEASLEY, the man of Aberdeen [Ohio], who married [as many as 5,000] runaway couples, is dead. He was elected in 1869.... Many happy couples of Grant [county were married by him.]

Wilson F. MERRELL, 71, died at his home near [Williams]town on last Wednesday after a brief illness; superinduced by age and a severe attack of LaGrippe. Buried in Williamstown Cemetery on Thursday with Masonic Lodge rites; was born in Gallatin County and was one of a family of ten, five boys and five girls, born to John and Cynthia MERRELL, all of whom are dead except two. More than 40 years ago Wilson married Casandria WILSON, sister of uncle Bert WILSON who died at this place only a few years ago. They had five children, all of whom were present at his demise and interment.

Born to the wife of Tom HASELWOOD, the 29th, a boy.

Williamstown: Hon. Daniel DAUGHERTY, great lawyer, statesman and orator, died last Monday.

Suicide by hanging on a peach tree in his own yard, J. K. MOREHEAD of near Knoxville, Pendleton County, prosperous and substantial farmer, last Thursday night [September 1, 1892]; for week or two before he had been drinking excessively and gaming; leaves children and a wife he had not lived with for several years.

Esquire H. Z. [Zeb] ALPHIN of Holbrook, started to Washington, D. C. last Saturday [for the G.A.R. Encampment Reunion] accompanied by John ALPHIN, Willis RUCKER, and George SIMPSON. Receiving a telegram from Crittenden that his father was dead. He got off the train at Walton and did not make the trip. His father was a very old man and was interred near his home Sunday afternoon.

Married at the home of Mr. JONES, father of the bride on Thursday, October 6, 1892, Charles F. BEVERLY, son of John S. and Mary BEVERLY of Eagle Mills, and Miss Ota JONES of Jonesville, by Reverend J. S. RUGGLES.

Obituary for John Jackson who died in St. Paul, Indiana of paralysis, October 8, 1892, aged 81 years, 8 months, and 17 days; born in Winchester, Virginia, January 25, 1811. Parents moved to Ohio in 1813, when 17 went to Kentucky to learn saddler's trade, following that until four years before his death. On October 5, 1854, he married Margaret H. RUDDLE who survives, no issue by his marriage; joined M. E. Church in 1876; moved to St. Paul in 1889. Slight paralysis while living in Williamstown, then more so in 1889 and September 1892. Buried at Landrum graveyard where she had a child buried.

"Uncle" Barney BONAR, aged about 70, and for a long time a resident of this county, died at his home near Oak Ridge Church yesterday of heart failure. Was once an officer of Pendleton. Leaves large family.

Mrs. RISEN, mother of J. M. RISEN, died Sunday night from the effects of bruises received in a [horse carriage] runaway last week.

Mrs. Naomi SIMS, wife of R. S. SIMS, and sister of J. A. and J. R. LEMON, died at her home near town [Williamstown]last Friday morning; buried at Williamstown Cemetery Saturday; was 42 and leaves husband, 4 sons and 3 daughters; was ill briefly with pneumonia.

Oak Ridge News: Barney BONAR's death was a shock to all; leaves wife, seven children, and host of grandchildren; funeral conducted at the church by Rev. HOFFMAN of Williamstown; buried in the cemetery at this place.

Obituary of Homer FORSYTHE - after lingering illness of some two years, died at the home of his father near Fairview, this county, aged 27 years, 1 month, and 22 days. Married on June 28, 1888 to Miss Ida ADAMS, near Williamstown. Consistent member of the Christian Church at Fairview; buried at Williamstown Cemetery, services and obituary by Rev. G. W. HILL. Survived by wife, little fatherless children, aged parents, and brothers and sisters. [dated November 19, 1892]

Felix CHARBONNEAU has entered suit against the county on account of his falling into the public privy vault last fall at night; came near being drowned.

2. Birth of Grover Cleveland [WEBSTER], boy, to wife of Robert J. WEBSTER.
3. Murder of Wm. B. WEBSTER, shot and killed on the morning of the 5th by Joseph W. "Joe Bill" WEBSTER, no more particulars of the killing available. [Feature article gives the following additional information: Joseph WEBSTER, farmer with a family and son of Joe WEBSTER shot and kill William WEBSTER, son of Berry L. WEBSTER, at Elliston. "They are all farmers, all Websters, and are brave to a fault, and when out of temper are very bad men." Dispute over hauling stone from Joe Bill's farm for the construction of the turnpike.

Mt. Pleasant News: Died on the 28th of last month [November 1892], the wife of Rev. Elijah PETTY, large family of children survive. Buried at the family burying ground. [see Cordova news below]

Cordova News: On the 29th, Rev. Elijah PETTY lost his companion after a brief illness. [see Mt. Pleasant News above]

Negro Marriages: "Judge C. C. CRAM directed and authorized the Elder of the colored church at this place [Williamstown] to perform marriage ceremonies and to compel all the members of his church who are living together as man and wife without authority of law to present themselves at the altar of his church for marriage. Dan BROWN and Miss HUME were married last Tuesday night, being the first couple to present themselves to receive this solemn right."

In Memoriam of our mother, Mrs. Nancy RISEN who departed this life at her home November 14, 1892 in the 64th year of her life. Leaves 5 children; was a faithful member of the Methodist Church for 48 years.

In  Memoriam of companion, mother, and Sister Martha J. PETTY, wife of Rev. Elija PETTY, born August 28, 1849 in Harrison County, Virginia; was married December 14, 1866. Obeyed the Gospel on the second Lord's Day in November 1879; died November 28, 1892; a devoted Christian Church member.
