Mt. Pleasant News - Marriage of Miss Daisy PETTY, daughter of Rev. Elijah PETTY, at his home, Sunday morning, December 25, to Mr. R. DUNN by Rev. PETTY.

Double Wedding at the home of U. M. NORTHCUTT, the bride's father, near Oak Ridge Baptist Church last Wednesday morning: [1] Wm. C. WARE, son of R. F. WARE, and Miss Corinne NORTHCUTT, and [2] Robert M. HOUSTON and Miss MINNIE NORTHCUTT by Rev. J. H. LIMERIC of the Christian Church.

On Tuesday night Mr. Ben BALLENGER lost another child from diphtheria, making three he has lost this week.  [see next issue]

Cherry Grove News - 30th birthday dinner given for Mr. ATKINSON at his home on New Year's Day.

Doudton News - Two of Ben BALLENGER's children were buried at Mt. Carmel Cemetery last week, making three deaths in his family in eight days from diphtheria.

Ben BALLANGER lost his fourth child from diphtheria last Tuesday evening. He has two children yet living, a boy about 6 years of age and a babe three weeks old.

Death of Richard M. DUDLEY, D. D., President of Georgetown College last Thursday. Was buried Saturday. Was editor of the Western Recorder before 13 years as president of Georgetown. [see next issue]

Death of Marion WAYLAND, influential citizen and wealthy farmer of Dry Ridge; heart trouble in presence of his wife Thursday morning, 12th. Funeral at home preached by Rev. G. W. HILL at his home Friday, followed by burial in Williamstown Cemetery. Leaves wife, aged parents, and 3 brothers; born February 13, 1853; married October 8, 1878 to Miss Lucia CONRAD, daughter of the late I. B. and Elizabeth CONRAD.

Death of Clovis, 22 months old little child of John and Isa CAMMAC on Wednesday, the 11th, near Jonesville, who fell into the fire and was so severely burned as to cause its death after two days of intense suffering. Funeral was preached Sunday by their pastor, Wm. McMILLAN, at Macedonia [Baptist Church]. [Burial was probably in cemetery adjoining church grounds visited by your abstracter in March 1991.]

Death of Alfred BICKERS, a prosperous and honorable citizen of Mason, Tuesday night [January 24, 1893] of heart trouble; was subject to spells at night but died without evidence of pain according to his surviving wife. Funeral will take place today [January 26, 1893].  [see 2-2-1893 issue]

In Memoriam of Ada, daughter of E. J. and Fannie MITTS, who died last Friday evening of consumption, aged 29 years, 10 months, and 5 days. At 14 joined Baptist Church at Grassy Run. Funeral [at Heekin according to 1-26-1893 issue]. Preached by Rev. G. W. HILL at that church Sunday, January 22. Buried beside her sister, who, last April died; survived by parents and family.

Newlywed reception for Mr. and Mrs. J. Willard HALEY (nee COLLINS) held on the 16th at the Hotel Alms. Mrs. Alice Lindsay COLLINS, her mother of Kentucky; Mrs. LINDSAY, her grandmother now past 80. [married in December 1892]

Death of Frank BUSH, railroad man, by being crushed between two cars last Friday afternoon at Williamstown; former Williamstown resident. Was raised by W. P. GIBSON of Sherman and had lived several years with S. B. ARNOLD of Crittenden; remains moved to Walton for burial. Had no relatives in the part of this part of the country.

Burial of Alfred BICKERS last Thursday [January 26, 1893] at White Chapel in this county; given funeral rites of the I.O.O.F. by 30 Odd Fellows present; funeral cortege of twelve miles from Crossroads to White Chapel, "which is an old burying ground of the Bickers family"; 200 persons present. Born in Owen County March 15, 1831; died suddenly of heart disease at his home [Mason, Grant County] January 24, 1893 [short of 62 years old]; became member of Centurion Lodge March 11, 1871, by initiation; Christian gentleman. [see 1-26-1893]

In Memoriam - Nancy RISEN, wife of Joseph RISEN, died at her home near Oak Ridge, Kentucky, November 14, 1892, aged 64 years; was born July 14, 1828 in Clark County, Kentucky. Married January 25, 1852 to Joseph RISEN. United with Methodist Church in 1844. Leaves 5 children.

In Memoriam - Ethelbert LOOMIS died December 31, 1892, aged 27 years; leaves wife. Married Miss Kate CALENDER May 26, 1892. Funeral preached by Rev. Wm. McMILLAN at Grassy Run Church on Sunday, January 1, 1893.

B. F. LEMON and wife have been entertaining a new son at their house since the 20th.

H. C. CHINN of Bourbon County, [administrator] has erected a monument at the grave of T. [Thos.] R. KENDALL.

Mrs. Lucia [Lucinda] C. WAYLAND qualified as administrix of her deceased husband [Marion WAYLAND] with her brother, R. P. CONRAD, surety.

Uncle James SMITH, aged 84 years, living near Mt. Zion has succeeded in getting a pension of $8 per month from date of his application. He was in the Black Hawk War in 1832.

P. T. BEAUREGARD, Confederate general, died in New Orleans on Monday.

Married at the M. E. Church south parsonage, Williamstown, on February 22, by Rev. P. H. HOFFMAN, W. H. S. TAYLOR of Ohio and Miss S. Florence BEACH of Grant County.

Newton J. CASON, living on Upper Street, died of typhoid fever yesterday, unexpectedly.

Mrs. Marcus C. LISLE, wife of Congressman Lisle of the 9th District, died at her home at Winchester last Friday.

Steve BEVERLY of Stewartsville, recently eloped with the wife of S. T. PRICE, were arrested in Aurora, Indiana for adultery. Mrs. BEVERLY put up bond for her husband, which was forfeited. Mrs. Price was fined $25 and 10 days in jail.

Mt. Zion News - Married Henry JUMP to Mrs. Bell FERREL; they journeyed to Williamstown.

Mt. Zion News - Uncle Johnathan WILLIAMS, 87, lately of Sherman, died very suddenly on the 10th. Buried Monday, the 13th, at Independence, Ky.

Flingsville News - Married at the bride's home at this place on the 2nd, Miss Lou MANN to H. D. MAINS, by Rev. WYATT of Morning View. Wedding supper at groom's fathers at Peach Grove, Pendleton County. Will live at Montgomery.

Death of Mrs. Isabella JEFFERS on the 8th at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. T. HINTON, after five weeks of pneumonia; in her 75th year. Member of Christian Church since 1842. Widow of Thomas JEFFERS who was well known in Grant County and church elder. Leaves two daughters and two sons, namely, N. H. and A. T. JEFFERS and Mrs. J. T. HINTON and Mrs. Vina SMITH. Funeral at Christian Church by Elder G. W. YANCEY of Cynthiana. Buried in Williamstown Cemetery.

Death of "Uncle" Johnathan WILLIAMS of Sherman suddenly at his home last Saturday. Buried at Independence Monday. About 85 years old; survived by all of his children; survived by his second wife whom he married last October; 4 grandchildren survive.

Keefer News - Two weddings Wednesday: Messrs. Tom ACRE and Hade ALEXANDER to Misses Nora and Agnes MASON.

Sherman News - A family reunion was at the home of Wm. POINTS last Saturday March 18 in honor of his 79th anniversary.

Mt. Zion News - Saturday was the 79th birthday of Hon. Wm. POINTS.

1. Dr. W. H. DAUGHERTY lives in Corinth; native of Harrison County; president of Corinth Deposit Bank; 58 years old.
2. James P. WEBB is a native of Tar-Heel [North Carolina?] but has lived in Grant County since boyhood; sheriff from 1872 to 1874; county court clerk from 1880 to 1888, etc.
3. Hon. D. S. CLAY is a lawyer since 1884; born and raised in Grant County; now 45 years of age.
4. Dr. O. P. HOGAN is youngest son of late O. P. HOGAN and 42 years old. Born and raised in sight of Williamstown; medical degree from New York University in 1872 but never engaged in profession; breeder and trainer of trotting horses.
5. Hon. C. D. REED is currently county representative; native of Bourbon County; 68 years old.
6. Hon. William POINTS would not accept nomination if tendered; has twice served in that position; 80 years old; wealthy and influential farmer.
7. Hon. W. W. DICKERSON's term in Congress expired March 4, will not be a candidate.
8. R. J. BLACKBURN is the leading Republican receiving votes by Courier readers; owns large tract of land near Sherman.

Death of Squire ABINGTON, 31, of pneumonia, last Saturday in New Orleans, celebrated English sport with reported income of $2000 a day.

 In Memory of Mrs. Isabella JEFFERS who died March 8, 1893, aged 74 years, 5 months; wife and mother.

Mrs. ALEXANDER, wife of Representative ALEXANDER of Owen, died at Frankfort Sunday and was buried in Owen County on Monday.

Marriage of Robert TULLY and Miss Addie ASHCRAFT last week at bride's parents home.

Funeral of Mrs. N. H. WITHERSPOON, niece of J. H. and W. F. WEBB, in Winchester last Sunday. Attended by them and J. H.'s daughter, Laura, Miss Josie WEBB and S. L. WEBB.

Sudden death by pneumonia, wife of Judge James O'HARA of Covington, at Hot Springs, Arkansas where she had been for her health; word received Tuesday evening.

In Memoriam - Everett BANNISTER was born in Boone County, Kentucky, February 28, 1860; married Miss Birdie ELLISTON, December 5, 1883, daughter of W. P. and Sallie ELLISTON, of Elliston, Grant County. Baptized 2nd Sunday in March 1887 at Ten Mile Baptist Church. Long sufferer of consumption. Member of order of R. R. Telegraphers; died March 13, 1893; funeral at Baptist Church in Union, Boone County; buried in Rice's Cemetery which overlooks the home of his childhood.

Mrs. Margarett LOCKHART died at her home near Mason last Saturday morning after a short illness, aged 75; leaves two children and husband and Mrs. R. W. WESTOVER of Dallas, Texas; buried in the cemetery at Mason last Sunday.

Death of T. S. "Uncle Tom" Porter, ex-postmaster [24 years], with pneumonia; ill three days at his Williamstown home Tuesday; born in Boone County 65 years ago. Began teaching school at 21; moved to Grant County in 1859; married in 1865 Miss Elizabeth MERRILL, daughter of Sinc MERRILL; 7 children, all yet living; brother Omer PORTER in Boone County and sister, Mrs. Mary E. JONES in Tennessee survive. Funeral today at his home; resolutions from teachers and pupils of Williamstown Graded School where he was janitor.

Emily BILLITER died at her home last Thursday of pneumonia.

Born to the wife of Sam T. WILSON on April 1, a fine 12 pound boy.

Biographical sketch and picture of Alonzo THRELKELD, candidate for Grant County representative of Mason precinct; born in Scott County October 8, 1845, nearly 48 years old now; third child of seven born to Milton and Mary Ann THRELKELD, also Scott natives; ten children born, eight living, of whom four boys and girls each; moved to Grant in 1875; farmer and merchant. "During the dark days of the Civil War he cast his lot with the "Lost Cause" and served four years in the celebrated John MORGAN cavalry."

News reached here last Thursday morning of the sudden death by paralysis of Mrs. Jennie FRITTS who lived in Williamstown most of her life; died in Belleview, Kentucky; her brother A. F. WILSON and son Robert LUCKY had the body moved to Williamstown where it was buried in the cemetery.

Remains of T. S. PORTER buried in Williamstown Cemetery last Thursday; funeral preached at his home by Rev. G. W. HILL. Large crowd including Graded School students dismissed.

A Grant County Murder - Letter received by marshal of Williamstown from Chief of Police of Detroit, Michigan advising William CONNERS, about 50, is a fugitive from justice; right name said to be Joshua MARKSBURY, who about 23 years ago [actually 1868] killed his father, Willis MARKSBURY [MARKSBERRY] about 7 miles from WIlliamstown, Grant County, with a rifle over a dispute; was arrested but broke jail [while court in session with 8 other prisoners]; fled to Canada and later joined by his family; wife's maiden name was Laura TUNGATE who he married in Kentucky about 27 years ago; had a sister named Mary Ada MARKSBURY who married a Frenchman named Alex O'LEE; Joshua is son of Millie MARKSBERRY who lives above town and a brother of T. J. and Hawkins MARKSBERRY; many of witnesses dead and others are widely scattered; his return will probably not be called.

Born in Grant County in the hills of Fork Lick, 7 miles south of Williamstown on February 24, 1823; now in his 71st year; father, Jas. M. GOUGE a native of Virginia; mother, Ella Jane JEWETT from Maryland; Jeff twice married, first to Sarah CLARK in 1841, daughter of Judge Thomas and Barbara CLARK; they had ten children before she died. He married second, in 1863, to Mary C. FITCH to whom 7 children were born; large land owner, farmer, and stock raiser.

Biographical sketch and picture of Corinth's Dr. W. H. DAUGHERTY. Born in Harrison County, Kentucky on March 20, 1835, the oldest of six children born to James and Mary F. DAUGHERTY; father was farmer and mechanic who died in 1867 from exposure in the Federal army; his grandfather was Henry DAUGHERTY, a native of the "Emerald Isle" and served in the War of 1812; W. H. moved to Grant County when 4 years old; raised in what is now Cordova district; maternal grandfather was T. T. THOMPSON; in 1858 married Miss A. B. MOZEE of what is now Cherry Grove, this county; no children. Dr. DAUGHERTY's most distinguished service to Grant County was in getting a part of Owen County cut off and added to Grant (now Corinth and Keefer districts); has educated orphan boys.

Biographical sketch and picture of O. P. HOGAN. Was born in Grant County June 13, 1851, the youngest son of Overton P. HOGAN, a historic figure in annals of Grant County; brother, W. N. HOGAN elected to Legislature in 1883 but died before serving as did his father who was elected in August 1885.

Inquest of lunacy held over Mrs. Dr. R. P. THOMAS. Her mind was found to be imbalanced and she was ordered to the asylum at Lexington.

ELLISTON, candidate for state senator; known as "Bob", born among the hills of Ten Mile Creek in the Flat Creek precinct; Virginia ancestors; father, Hiram ELLISTON of Williamstown; in 1887 married Miss Clara WILLIS of Brooksville, Kentucky, daughter of late Judge WILLIS of Bracken County; of several children, only one, Will C., a boy of 12, is living.

Grant County mob lynches Jim COLLINS, horse thief, at Sherman within 300 yards of the spot where he was born, last Wednesday. On June 18, 1841, William S. UTTERBACK was assassinated by Lyman CROUCH and Smith MAYTHE, who on June 10 [probably 20] was hung by a mob of 350.

Instant death of William HOWE of Sherman by train on railroad crossing near John CONRAD's last Tuesday morning. Body conveyed to his family at Sherman.

Negro outraged and murdered two RAY girls at Bardwell, Ky.; was killed by a mob.

Death of Cebera WOODYARD, 74, farmer, last Friday at his home one mile east of Cherry Grove in Grant County. Born north of Williamstown, March 21, 1819; parents were William and Rebecca W. WOODYARD of old Virginia stock. He was one of ten children - 3 boys and 7 girls - all dead except one sister in Illinois; he married April 18, 1841, Elizabeth COBURN, of this county; lived together more than 50 years until death; had five children - 3 boys and 1 boy [as printed]; 2 girls now dead; those living are Mrs. J. K. PAGE, Mrs. C. S. SIMPSON, and George WOODYARD; buried Saturday in Williamstown Cemetery.

Baby [Anna C. LEMON] left at doorstep of colored man in Williamstown the first of May, who was adopted by J. R. LEMON and wife, died last week of cholera infantum; was buried in Williamstown Cemetery last week. [see next issue]

Zion, after short illness, last Sunday morning, August 27, [1893]; was born in Carter County, Tennessee, August 3, 1810; daughter of Jacob and Sarah POLAND and eldest of 12 children - 4 daughters and 8 sons - namely, Polly, Jessie, John, Elijah, Joseph, Reuben, Jacob, Elizabeth, Julia, Sarah, William and Isaac, six of whom survive, four sons and two daughters. When about 18 her father moved from Tennessee to Gallatin County, Kentucky; united in great revival of 1842 with Old Providence Baptist Church which later was new Oakland Church; after deaths of parents she lived with her brothers-in-law, Josiah ELLIS of Gallatin County and P. G. WEBSTER; funeral at Mt. Zion Monday, August 28, by Rev. HILL.

Marriage license was issued Monday to J. J. REDMAN, 54, and Marinda Ann SIMPSON, 29.

Death of Hon. B. N. [Benjamin Newton or "Uncle Newt"] ELLISTON at his Grant County home, September 1, 1893; buried at Williamstown on Sunday, the 2nd; funeral at his home by Rev. Lafe JOHNSON; born in this county at same farm where he died well into his 74th year. Father was James ELLISTON, 2nd representative of Grant County; mother was Nancy JONES [?]; he was 3rd of 8 children born to his parents, 3 boys and 5 girls, five of whom survive; paternal grandparents were Benjamin and Sallie (HEILOR) ELLISTON of Virginia who came to Kentucky in 1824 [?]; this couple had 13 children of whom B. N. was eldest; only Joe T. ELLISTON of Glencoe survives; his mother was left a widow when he was a lad; married in 1883 to Miss Martha McGINNIS, daughter of late Hon. John T. McGINNIS, who survives; no children born to them; served in Civil War with the South in the 4th Tennessee and 4th Kentucky Cavalry.

Minnie MOORE, colored, died of consumption last Friday and was buried in Williamstown Cemetery Saturday.

Oscar BEASLEY with his wife are at home and will in the future make Williamstown their abiding place.

Murder - Scott FIELDS killed Marthy BRYANT near Corinth Sunday. The killing was done in Harrison County. The murderer is yet at large.

The case of Ella MENDENHALL vs. Mace TUNGATE has been reversed and the will of Mrs. TUNGATE will be set aside.

Born to the wife of C. W. [Woster] TURNER on th 16th, a fine boy, 13-3/4 pounds, Dr. J. M. WILSON attending, who said, "this is one of the largest children at birth he has ever seen."

Suicide of Frank WILLIAMS, by hanging in his grandfather's barn [William SMITH], last Friday; two notes on his body read, "My life has been a failure, so I take this means of ending it. F. W. WILLIAMS" and "My whole life has been a failure. F. W. WILLIAMS, Good bye.";  jury said cause was sickness and melancholy; was 22, very bright young man, well educated, good habits, and gentlemanly demeanor; burial on Saturday from the home of William Smith.

Death of Fountain T. HAYDEN, 78, last Thursday at home of his son-in-law, Rev. G. W. HILL; resided in Peaks Mill precinct, Franklin County with his wife; was visiting his daughter, Mrs. G. W. HILL when attacked by la grippe; buried in Franklin County; aged wife was confined to bed at his death; a son, John Hayden, returned with his remains.

Death of I. G. ROBINSON, principal of Williamstown Free Graded School, Tuesday, after illness of four days; born in Clark County, Kentucky, May 28, 1856, the eldest of three children born to Butler and Emma JACKSON ROBINSON; their ancestors were from Virginia and of Scotch-Irish descent; married Miss Mollie HAGGARD of Clark County, on October 23, 1884; she survives; funeral conducted by Oddfellows of Williamstown who conveyed body to Winchester and out in country to his boyhood home and buried yesterday; was 6 foot 2 inches tall and 265 pounds.

Death - Mrs. Louisiana COLLINS, aunt of R. S. SIMS, died last Sunday of pneumonia at her home near Mason.

Death - Miss Hardie INGRAM, daughter of Robert INGRAM, died of consumption Christmas morning and was buried Tuesday.

Near Death - Mrs. Fannie SATTERWHITE and Mrs. Sue PICKETT of Frankfort, and Mrs. Annie BURNS of Louisville, are at the bedside of their mother, Mrs. [Fountain] HAYDEN, who is lying very ill at the home of her son-in-law, Rev. G. W. HILL.

Birth of a new son to Rev. T. J. MARKSBERRY, of Georgetown, who was on his way to Short Creek Church Saturday.

Suicide of Mrs. Dr. A. V. MENEFEE, living with her husband at New Eagle Mills, Christmas night, by taking poison; youngest daughter of J. C. FRANKS of Stewartsville; had been married about 2 years.

Assassination of Martin FINN, young farmer of Pendleton County, living near Falmouth, last Saturday, by unknown parties' "his head smashing into a jelly."

Will of Sarah A. TUNGATE, probated by Mason TUNGATE, appealed to the Court of Appeals; she was a helpless, speechless, bed-ridden paralytic 65 years old; refers to will of her husband, John TUNGATE, written in 1873 and executed May 14, 1887; he died in the spring of 1887; an unmarried son and daughter lived with her; a married daughter lived nearby; son lived in Texas; granddaughter Ella TUNGATE MENDENHALL, recently married, and a contestant to the will, lived 35 miles away; court ruled Sarah mentally incompetent to write her will.
