News - Jessie KING, of Lexington, a brakeman on the Southern R. R. was killed
by an overhead bridge near Walton last Sunday night; his body fell between
the cars and caught on the bumpers and was not found until the train reached
Sherman.

began housekeeping on Falmouth Street [Williamstown]; he is son of Assessor
R. L. BOSWELL.
Sad
account of the suicide, by poisoning, of the wife of Edward FULTZ, of Westport,
Indiana, last Friday [letter from Mr. FULTZ is dated January 2, 1895]; she
eloped [September 17th] with J. W. [John] MARTIN, who lives in Grant County
with his family; she died in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Covington, leaving husband
and 3 children.

A Rival Lover's Crime - Samuel [Sam] MONTGOMERY killed by his half-brother, George DUNCAN, yesterday [January 18, 1895] at Williamstown; was courting Miss Henrietta ALLEN, a music teacher, daughter of a farmer near Williamstown; MONTGOMERY had shot DUNCAN two months before. [Actually the tragedy occurred in Williamsburg, Whitley County, not Williamstown.]

Thursday night, in childbirth. Her remains were interred in the cemetery
at Crooked Creek on Friday.
The
common school at Cherry Grove [Hardscrabble] was destroyed by fire one night
last week.
The
wife of John R. CLARK, who resides about 1 mile south of town, was burned
to death on Thursday night of last week [clothes caught on fire]; died next
morning leaving 2 week old baby and husband who is an aged Union army veteran
and pensioner; she was buried Friday at Hardscrabble
graveyard.

John BICKERS and L. WEISENBURG, of Frankfort and L. WEISENBURG, of Frankfort,
were attending Circuit Court here the first of the week. [The latter was
plaintiff vs. CARDER and VALLANDINGHAM and was awarded $1,750 - in the next
issue.]

Joe M. COLLINS died at his Covington home the 14th; was oldest member of
the Grant County Bar.
The
celebrated Cebera ALLPHIN will case began. U. C. left an estate valued at
$70,000 nearly all of which was in cash, cash notes and bonds. By his will
his wife, whom he had married late in life, was devised his entire
estate.
Letter
from Charley PETTIT in California - he was born upon the banks of the Licking
[river] during the cornshucking time of the year 1862; his grandfather came
from Virginia, settled in Kentucky and raised a large family, most of whom
have had considerable trouble in evading the revenue
laws.
Death
of Dr. Wm. T. McGINNIS, son of Hon. H. T. McGINNIS, of Eminence, Ky., at
his father's home on the 12th of typhoid fever; prominent physician who nursed
his sister, Mrs. Grace MOODY, following her to the grave by 3
weeks.

Fred[erick] DOUGLAS, the colored orator and statesman, and the greatest of
his race, died very suddenly at his home in Washington, D. C. on the 20th,
aged 78 years.

John VANARSDALL, of Mercer County, who shot and killed Dr. HARROD a few months
ago, has been found not guilty.

to the wife of Wm. STROUD Jr. on the 22nd, an 8 pound
girl.

W. BELEW, of near Knoxville, died at his home on last Wednesday. His remains
were interred at the Smith Burying Ground in Pendleton County. Mr. BELEW
was 40 years of age at the time of his death and leaves a wife and 6 small
children.

Courier - I wish to correct the mistakes concerning my Mother's death. She
was burned on Wednesday, February 6, about 9 o'clock. She went to lay the
baby in a large chair, and I think her clothes caught on fire in the back.
She was alone in the house. Her clothes were all burned off of her and top
of one shoe. She was buried in Williamstown Cemetery Thursday evening at
3 o'clock. The baby was about a month old. Julia

Ben BARNETT, of near town, died on Tuesday and was buried at the cemetery
at this place [Williamstown] yesterday. Her death was produced by a severe
attack of malarial fever.
Mrs.
Elizabeth WHITE died at her home, 2 miles from Crittenden, Saturday night,
February 23, 1895, of paralysis; was born November 11, 1832; last October
38 years ago she was married to Thos. WHITE Esq [who] died 28 years ago this
month, leaving 3 children to raise; she leaves 2 daughters and a son; funeral
preached by the writer, Rev. G. W. HILL; buried in the family burying
ground.

- John B. RANKIN, for 18 years a citizen of Williamstown, died at Midway,
Kentucky on March 9th [1895]; funeral at Williamstown and burial in town
cemetery March 11th; born and reared in Scott County; was 67; his father
was Thomas RANKIN, a Methodist minister who travelled the Williamstown circuit
for years; his brothers were William S. RANKIN, a Williamstown lawyer, and
Hugh RANKIN, Methodist preacher; wife was Miss Elizabeth FITCH of this county;
leaves 4 sons, 2 daughters, and 2 sisters, Mrs. S. B. FITCH, of this county,
and Mrs. Mattie DAUGHERTY, of Somerset, Ky.; died of la grippe at the home
of his son, Wayne RANKIN, near Midway, Ky.; life long member of Methodist
Church.

W. D. ELLISTON received word Saturday morning that his step father-in-law,
Daniel BROWN, of near Poplar Grove, Owen County, had committed suicide by
hanging himself. The cause of the rash act is attributed to an attack of
grip.
4.
Untimely death of Dr. ALLAN, of Warsaw, reported; he had a large practice
here at one time.

next married daughter of B. P. CLARK in Ky., by whom, 5 children were born
- Marcella Kate, Elbert Clark, Albert Porter, Jennie Pauline, and Henry Bryant;
2 of his sons are twins; he is a Republican and a
Baptist.
2. H. Z. ALLPHIN came to Grant County about 32 years ago; was born in Schuyler County, Illinois, September 10, 1842; his parents were from Virginia and lived in Kentucky prior to his birth and return to the State; one of the foremost teachers in Grant, in charge of the largest and best paying schools in the county; married in 1866 to Miss Lucretia LUMMIS, who died in 1882; in 1883 he married Miss Lucinda LUMMIS; 7 children born to these two unions - 2 girls and 5 boys - all living; owns a good farm across Eagle Creek; represents the voting precincts of Corinth, Mason, Keefer, Cross Roads, Stewartsville and Downingsville [places wherein many BICKERS resided]
3. William SHIELDS was born April 30, 1858, in the Oak Ridge neighborhood, where he yet resides; son of J. T. and Francis SHIELDS; a Republican and a farmer; wife is daughter of Louis E. BURROUGHS; 3 children: Grace, Cecil and Stella.
4. James M. THOMPSON, of Elliston, was born in Nicholas County, Kentucky April 27, 1842; served with Humphrey MARSHALL in the Confederacy and, after the war, settled in Grant County; married Miss Julia ARNOLD, daughter of Rev. J. M. ARNOLD; they have 2 children: Marion A. and Carrie E.

last week. [He] was one of the oldest citizens of Grant County, at the time
of his death being in his 85th year. He had lived nearly all of his life
in this county. He raised quite a large family of children; several of his
sons are still living in Grant.

Saturday, the Cincinnati Enquirer, reports about "Plunger Doc" MARTIN
or Dr. E. D. FRANK, who was born and raised at this place [Williamstown],
being the eldest son of Dr. W. G. FRANK; his brother, Karl FRANK, and
brother-in-law, W. C. JOHNSON went to Cincinnati to pick him up after losing
a small fortune on race horses, he tried to end his life last night by taking
a dose of morphine.

of the sad and horrible death of the youngest son of Dr. W. H. ROBINSON,
of Corinth, reached here yesterday. While the northbound Q. & C. train
was leaving the Corinth depot the boy attempted to leap upon the steps of
one of the cars, and missing them, was thrown under the wheels and cut to
pieces.
Doctors
performed a very painful operation on Russell, the young son of Jesse CHIPMAN,
Monday.

Richard LEE, a prominent young lawyer of Frenchburg, Ky. and a brother of
James L. LEE, of this place, is visiting his brother and father-in-law, D.
S. CLAY. His wife and children are with him. Mr. LEE is a Grant County boy
and is doing well in the mountains of Ky. He says that one of the most serious
difficulties which confronts a lawyer in the mountain country is the disposition
of many of his clients to pay their fees in cow skins and moonshine
whiskey.

work. In Elliston on Wednesday afternoon of last week; Uncle Jimmie D. ELLISTON
died naturally that day also; R. A. DICKERSON was shot from the train by
Dr. A. G. ELLISTON, of New Castle, Henry County, youngest son of Uncle Jimmie
by his 2nd wife, who was a sister to Dr. William McGINNIS and John T. McGINNIS;
formerly of Grant; DICKERSON was the son of William S. DICKERSON, who died
about 12 months ago; his mother was a McGINNIS; the involved men were cousins;
DICKERSON leaves a wife and child; buried in Williamstown Friday.

June 6, 1817; his father was Dr. Joseph LEWIS, a revolutionary soldier, and
his mother, Keturah DENISON, a descendant of George DENISON, a soldier in
the army of CROMWELL; in 1847, he married Miss Caroline Matilda CANNON, who
was born in Bourbon County, Ky. in 1825; 6 children: 4 living and 2 died
in infancy.

- James D. ELLISTON ["Uncle Jimmie D"] died at his Elliston Station home,
Wednesday afternoon, August 7, 1895; was oldest son and child of Robert ELLISTON
deceased, and a brother of W. P. ELLISTON who died less than 1 year ago,
was in 76th year being born December 4, 1819; married November 10, 1841 to
Miss Ellen SPENCER, a daughter of prominent Gallatin County family; 5 children
were born, 3 sons and 2 daughters; 2 survive, J. K. P. and G. M. D. ELLISTON;
his wife died July 30, 1863; on February 26, 1866 he married Miss Judith
Ann McGINNIS, a sister to John T. and Dr. I. W. McGINNIS, who both reside
in New Castle, Ky.; 2nd wife died December 4, 1875, when his 2 little children,
aged 7 and 5, were taken in by his wife's family; James' mother died in his
early childhood; his death was barely 1 mile from where he was born. Lived
with Mr. and Mrs. Smith COLLINS and 2 daughters who rendered him kind service;
his brother, Hiram ELLISTON, lived in Williamstown; funeral was preached
by his pastor, Rev. William McMILLAN at his home on August 18; his body taken
to old Ten Mile and buried in the church yard by the side of his first wife
and 3 of their children.

Dead,by an Operator's Blunder, Freight Trains Collide Head-End on the Southern,
just north of Blanchet, Ky., at 11 o'clock Saturday night. Fireman George
SLOSHER, 26, of McInerney's [boarding house] on Oak Street in Ludlow, was
crushed to death. W. H. HENDRICKS, a tramp from Ft. Lodge, Kansas, also crushed
to death and died on the train which was bringing him to Cincinnati for aid.
Papers on him identified him as a blacksmith in search of work. SLOSHER later

united Dr. C. F. VIOLETT and Miss Susie DEAN in marriage; groom was 16 and
a young physician of Napoleon; bride was eldest child of the late Wm. DEAN
and was 21; they had 12 children; 11 of whom still live - an infant son died
June 3, 1861; 8 of the children are married and live within 20 miles of the
old parental home; the eldest is Mrs. J. T. WILLIS, of Williamstown; the
youngest is Mrs. J. J. GARRISON, of Union, Boone County; last Tuesday, the
golden anniversary was celebrated about 1/4 mile from where they were
married.

on Trial - William CONRAD vs. J. B. SANDERS. CONRAD alleged that SANDERS
had alienated the affections of his wife, broken up his home, and destroyed
his happiness; at the time, he and wife were separated but living in the
same house, pending divorce action which was granted; Mrs. CONRAD is a daughter
of Jacob RENAKER, of Dry Ridge, one of the richest men in the county; she
was given custody of the children.

of Patrick FLANNELLY, of Grant County, on October 14, at age 69 years; due
to stomach trouble; had 3 sons: Michael, Martin, and John, all well known
in northern Ky., and one daughter, Mrs. Charles HALPIN; given last rites
of Catholic Church; born in county Sligo, Province of Connaught, Ireland
in 1826; in 1846, at age 20, he married Miss Margaret CULLY; started shortly
for America, settling first in Ohio, then Ky.; 4 children survive; was interred
from St. Joseph's Catholic Church; funeral by Father BIELER; buried in adjoining
cemetery beside his beloved wife, who died 3 years

- Frank TURNER is a free man after serving 16 years of a life sentence in
the Kentucky penitentiary for the killing of Frank JUDD; Governor BROWN gave
the pardon on the condition that he leave Kentucky and never return; he is
now in Kansas City and will be joined by his old mother and two of his brothers,
Charley and John, who are going to see him; "one of the worst crimes committed
in Grant County"; was tried 16 years
ago.

of John J. LANDRUM, of Broad Ridge, last Friday, of heart failure; was born
November 4, 1818, being 77 years, and 10 days old; in 1841, he married Miss
Sarah A. ECKLER and, sometime after she had died, married in 1871 to Miss
Elizabeth ECKLER, sister of his first wife, who survives him; 15 children
were born to these two unions, 10 of whom are living; funeral preached by

Death
of John F. SHERIFF, of Cherry Grove, at home last Sunday; a proud Irishman;
was born in Londonderry County, northern Ireland, December 11, 1817, the
5th son of 11 children born to Samuel and Margaret SHERIFF; 10 boys and 1
girl; his father was a tenant farmer and strict Presbyterian; parents came
to America and Cincinnati in 1837 (except one son); Samuel bought 800 acres
in 1838 in what is known as the Sheriff neighborhood; in 1841 Samuel died
and his wife died a few years later; only 3 of John's siblings survive him:
William J., Henry B., and Robert; John was buried in the cemetery at this
place [Williamstown] Monday.
In
Memoriam - Fannie May SEE, daughter of Richard and Katie SEE, died October
4, 1895, aged 18 months, 2 weeks and 2 days. Her death was caused by whooping
cough.
Death
of Uncle Jerry RUDICILL, at his home about 2 miles west of town on Wednesday,
November 20, 1895; he was one of the oldest landmarks of this neighborhood
for the last 45 years; was born in Brown County, Ohio, November 20, 1813
and died 82 years later; on January 7, 1834, he married Sarah GALLANT, to
whom 7 children were born, of whom 3 survive: Jerry Jr., Uriah, and Mrs.
Sarah Jane CLARK; his wife died some years ago; a bricklayer, only one brick
house in Williamstown is not part of his work; funeral was preached at his
home by Rev. REAGAN; buried in Williamstown
Cemetery.

illness at 75 years, 5 months, and 13 days; in 1839 she married Lewis STEPHENS;
they had 13 children, 7 boys and 6 girls, 9 of whom survive her along with
