at the residence of Mrs. Cora HOGAN on Paris and Falmouth Streets, Jas. A.
O'HARA and Miss Eugenia HOGAN were married by Rev. Willard G. CRAM of the
Methodist Church; a school mate of the bride; they left for
Cincinnati.
John
M. RISEN, prominent farmer of the Oak Ridge neighborhood, died at his home
last Saturday afternoon; ill for 6 weeks with lung and stomach trouble; was
a son of Joseph and Nancy RISEN; born and raised within a 1/2 mile of the
spot in which he died; his father died 25 years ago of milk sickness; his
mother died about 5 years ago from being thrown from a runaway buggy; his
parents and brother, Joseph RISEN, lay buried in a neglected and decaying
private burying ground on the farm of W. D. WESTOVER; John RISEN, at the
time of his death, was 42 years old; his funeral was Monday at the Oak Ridge
Baptist Church and he was buried in the cemetery at that place; some 15 years
ago, he was married to Miss Lizzy DENNY of Cordova, to whom several children
were born; is survived by his wife and children, and 3 married and 1 single
sister [as printed]; resolutions from his Williamstown Lodge No. 74, K. of
P., mentions his wife, Miss Elizabeth DENNY, daughter of William and Nancy
DENNY, [who married him on] September 15, 1881; to this union 4 children
were born: William, Fannie, John, and Elizabeth; he was 45 years of age at
his death [notice different age above]. [Virgil CHANDLER's Grant County
Cemeteries, Volume III, Page 179, state "John M. RISEN, aged 44 years, 10
months, 28 days, death date, January 8,
1898."]
James
KELLEY and daughter of near Morgan were drowned in a branch near Livingood
Station Sunday afternoon. They were attempting to cross when the water upset
their buggy and they were carried by the current out into the Licking. Their
bodies had not been recovered on Tuesday
morning.
Emmett
ORR, for 20 years connected with the Owen News, has disposed of that paper
and, after his term of office has expired, will moved to North Dakota where
he has large interests in town sites and farming lands. It was up there that
he met and married his charming wife and to her early home he will
return.

buried in Lexington Cemetery; Nathaniel BLACKFORD, a brother, will visit
in Williamstown for a few weeks; and aged uncle [Jacob SANDUSKY of Shelbyville]
was killed instantly in the same
accident.

Unspeakable
Crime Committed on An Aged Woman. Husband cover with a pistol while his wife
is assaulted [near Crittenden]. Accused are Robert BOLDEN, John STURGEON,
Elmer POINTS [son of W. H. POINTS], and Kirt McBEE; the latter two tried
to prevent the outrage.
On
Monday a writ was sworn out by Ed. FURGESON against John SHINKLE charging
him with the offense of seduction on promise of marriage with his sister,
Lucy FURGESON. The writ was directed to Grant and other
counties.

William LOWE of the Mason neighborhood, was adjudged a lunatic and taken
to the Anchorage asylum; he is 20, strong and healthy, but epilepsy developed
and he was at times dangerous.

Commonwealth of Kentucky vs. Robert CAMPBELL, charged with drawing a piston
on his wife; not guilty.
Letter
received from the prodigal John J. SECHREST, written 2 months ago from Fort
Yukon on the Yukon River in Alaska; he left Grant County several months ago
owing several people money.
Mrs.
J. D. DAUBMAN, wife of J. D. DAUBMAN, who resides on the Yancey farm north
of town, died last Thursday, January 13; husband and a few close friends
of the family accompanied her remains for funeral and burial at Ruddell's
Mills in Bourbon County; she was born in Bourbon County January 28, 1853;
she married April 27, 1892; no children blessed their
marriage.

CARLISLE, youngest son of the late John G. CARLISLE, died suddenly at his
New York City home on Sunday.

STEPHENS, wife and infant daughter, left Monday to make their home in Oklahoma

the determined resistance of her father, Miss Daisy LANCASTER of Corinth,
and James A. REDNOWER were married Monday at the LeClerk Hotel in Vevay,
Indiana; she is only daughter of J. W. LANCASTER, after the elopement, they
now live at the home of the groom's brother-in-law, Doc
MOORE.

Jim", James O. BERRY, the millionaire tramp, died this morning [January 17
at Paducah, Ky.] at the New Richmond Hotel; was about 40 and married
twice.

relatives; has used tobacco 65 years, showing "plainly that tobacco is a

on the 26th for his mother, Aunt Duck LAWRENCE; 6 children and 14 grandchildren
were there; she has never lost a child or grandchild; "the children's father
who had fallen asleep [died] left his portrait on the wall looking as though
he was glad the children had come."

STURGEON, wanted for a charge of rape [of Mrs. Sarah FAULKNER] in Grant County,
has been arrested in Marysville, on the western borders of Kansas; BOLDEN
is also in that state. Sheriff G. S. WEBB has gone to bring him
back.

and mother.

was married and had a large family; was buried in the family burying around

old at death; in 1868 she married James Wilson, who survives her; funeral

Memory. David T. FRANKS, who came to an untimely death at the hands of his

- Achilles BROWN of near Dry Ridge, commonly known as Chill, died at his
home last Friday and was buried in the Old NICHOLS burying ground Sunday;
was born January 28, 1832; was never married and leaves two half brothers
and one half sister.
Grant
County has lost three paupers by death during the last week. Ephraim KNIGHT
and Charlie YORK and a little NEGRO boy. The Negro was buried in the colored
cemetery at Crittenden and the other two were laid to rest in the county
lot in Williamstown Cemetery.

M. RAINES, a Church of Christ preacher of Cincinnati, is a Grant County boy;
was born and raised on the waters of Grassy Run Creek about 6 miles west
of Williamstown.
Mrs.
McBEE qualified as the executrix of her husband's, Thomas McBEE, last will
and testament. She lived with her husband in the same house in which she
now resides for more than 54 years prior to his
death.

Memory - Mrs. Hattie PINKARD, wife of N. H. PINKARD, died at her home near
Williamstown on the 14th; was about 60; husband survives; funeral was at
Williamstown Methodist Church; buried in Williamstown Cemetery, overlooking
the town.

Thomas PARR, who lives near here, committed suicide by hanging himself with
a piece of bark Sunday evening about 1 o'clock. His body was not found 'til
5 o'clock in the afternoon and he had been hanging nearly 4 hours. The Coroner
of Scott County held an inquest Monday morning and rendered a verdict that
deceased came to his death by his own
hands.

WALDROP Sr. was born in Louisa County, Virginia, April 16, 1808; died May
27, 1898 at the age of 90 years, 1 months, and 11 days; paternal ancestors
were English; maternal ancestors were Scotch; married January 1833 to Miss
Lucy Duke SIMS of Hanover County, Virginia, by Elder Elie BALL, a famous
Baptist minister; her only brother, S. P. SIMS, moved to Kentucky about 1832,
and soon after moved to Grant County until his death, leaving a large family
living in and near Williamstown; my father and mother with one child (the
writer, J. W. WALDROP) came to Kentucky in September 1836, settling first
at Dry Ridge, then in Boone and Carroll Counties; he moved to Owen County
in 1840 and Owenton in 1889, where he died; he had 6 brothers and 4 sisters,
all dead; were parents of 8 children - 2 girls and 6 boys - of whom 5 are
living; his wife passed away August 2, 1869; he married secondly Mrs. Mary
ROBERTS of Henry County, November 1872, who survives
him.

Emma MERRILL was born in Williamstown, Kentucky, June 10, 1856, and died
in Lexington June 10, 1898, being just 42; one of four children, all girls,
born to Mr. and Mrs. St. Clair MERRILL, and is the second to die; Mrs. Lizzie
PORTER of Williamstown and Mrs. Eva RUSSELL of Russellville, Kentucky survive
her; came from old and respected Grant County family; failure of health caused
her removal to Lexington; funeral was at the home of her sister, Mrs. Lizzie
PORTER on Sunday, June 12, followed by burial in the Evergreen Cemetery across
the street.

Turley WEBB, the 20 months old son of Sheriff G. S. WEBB, who was so badly

after the accident; Tuesday he was buried in the Williamstown Cemetery; parents
survive him.

Sudden
Death: Leon LATIMER, farmer of the East Williamstown district, died very
suddenly at his home last week of typhoid fever and exposure; left a wife,
children, and a fair sized estate.
The
little 3-year-old girl baby of Charley CROWLEY, section forman on the Queen
and Crescent, died on Tuesday night after a long and painful illness. Her
remains will be taken to Lexington and interred
today.
At
the residence of W. A. VEST, near Sherman, W. G. McNAY and Hattie C. CONRAD
were married July 20, 1898.

July 29, was the anniversary of the 79th birthday of J. H. MUSSELMAN at his
home on Beech Branch; all of his living children live near his home; he and
wife have spent almost all of about 45 years of married life in this home;
he was one of the early settlers of Grant
County.

Leonard McGLASSON, 70, of Mason, died Tuesday; since his recent marriage
his health has been precarious; was buried Tuesday afternoon at Williamstown
Cemetery; was born in Kenton County November 21, 1827; father was James McGLASSON
and his mother was formerly Jurida HUFFMAN, both Virginians; they moved to
Grant County in 1831; Leonard lived for a time in Ohio, then Boone County,
Kentucky until March 10, 1898 when he returned to Grant; was a farmer and
carpenter; married November 28, 1852 to Martha A. DILLARD, who died some
years since; they had two children: W. P. McGLASSON and the wife of Millard
GOUGE, both living at Mason; at death was the oldest Oddfellow in Grant
County.

Alma, son of Baily CHILDERS of this place, and a member of Company M., 2nd
Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, died at Ft. McPherson, Georgia last week of
typhoid fever. His remains were taken to Georgetown and buried. [Abstractor's
Note: This is the first reported death of a Grant County soldier as a result
of enlistment in the Spanish-American War. The ENCYCLOPEDIA AMERICA, c1966,
volume 25, page 360x states: "Over 5,000 soldiers and sailors lost their
lives, but of these fewer than 400 were killed in battle or died of wounds.
More than 90 percent of the American casualties were caused by disease."
Many of Grant County's boys were camped at Chickamauga Park, Georgia near
the Tennessee line. If they became very sick, they were sent to Ft. McPherson
Hospital near Atlanta for treatment. Many of Grant's soldiers never saw battle
action.]

MUNSON of near Holbrook, in Owen County, returned home last Monday morning
from the war; was in the regular army (6th Infantry) who "Fought, bled, and
died" in the battle of Santiago; was shot through the lung while scaling
the heights of San Juan Hill and was carried from the field almost a
corpse.
The
infant child of Tom BRUMBACK died of summer sickness Wednesday of last week
and was buried Thursday. The child that died was one of the twins. The other
one has been quite sick, but is
improving.

The following was reported by the Georgetown correspondent of the Louisville
Times, of the 19th: T. F. BROCK in jail on the charge of stealing a horse
from John STONE of Sadieville, committed suicide at the jail last nigh by
taking morphine (supplied by a Negro trusty, Al MARTIN). His trial was fixed
for tomorrow. He was about 38 and married. His father lives at Corinth, Grant
County.
2.
Jack HUTCHESON, formerly of this place, who is in jail at Cynthiana, charged
with horse stealing, attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself with
a towel last week.

Memoriam: Rev. J. W. HALL was born in Florence, Alabama, July 27, 1830, and
died at his home in Heekin, this county, Monday, September 5, 1898; was youngest
son of Dr. Moody HALL; was only surviving member of 8 children; Dr. HALL
was born in Boston, Mass. and married Miss Isabella MURRAY, a Scotch lady;
they lived in Florence and Huntsville, Alabama, then Desoto County, Mississippi
where he died September 1, 1845; J. W.'s mother died in Huntsville in 1832;
J. W. was in the Mexican War; married Miss Caroline Virginia HOMER of Madison
County, Alabama on November 12, 1851; he served in the Confederate army under
General FOREST until his capture in late 1864; then he moved to Campbell
County, Kentucky; July 28, 1882 his wife died leaving 8 children; two died
in the South before the family came to Kentucky; two children, Robert HALL
and Miss Willie HALL died since then; March 22 1884 he married Miss Sarah
J. GROSS of Owen County; survived by his second wife, three sons: D. M. and
John Hall of Heekin, this county, and Dr. Whitty Hall of Bloomington, Illinois;
two daughters: Mrs. Anna HARRISON of Grant and Miss Birdie HALL of Bloomington,
Illinois; memorial services were held at the Grassy Run Baptist Church Tuesday,

Dinner last Sunday in the ASHCRAFT family for N. K. ASHCRAFT, living 1/2
mile south of Knoxville; he is 80 and has eleven living children; all present

Mrs. ASHCRAFT sill have three children unmarried: Miss Carrie, 21, Myrtle

18; leaves parents, brother, and

One
day in early part of the year [1898] Dave T. FRANKS was shot and killed in
a "blind tiger" in the town of Crittenden by Harve SANDERS. SANDERS
disappeared, was found a few days ago in the Bath County, Kentucky mountains
and returned to the Grant County
jail.

HENSLEY, member of Co. G, 2nd Kentucky regiment, returned home Monday, having
been mustered out; is about the only one of the volunteer soldiers from this
place who shows and disposition to re-enlist; will bo to Ft. Thomas in a
few days and enlist in regular ary. C. B. CUNNINGHAM has evidently had enough
of soldier life for the present and has gone to work painting for SANDERS
and TANNER.

SWITZER ordering his paper and correspondence between them; will live in

his liver; would have been 75 on the day of his

when applying for a license, "Hub" was asked his occupation; he said, "I
is a professional fox huntal, sah!"; he took his bride to his Cynthiana Street
residence and is now the happiest colored gentleman in
town.

B. TURNER; bride is daughter of D. J. CHARBONNEAU, with whom they have begun
housekeeping; groom has purchased grocery stock of Mr. CHARBONNEAU, who has
recently leased the Johnson Hotel.

Memory: On Friday, November 24, R. T. KUHN, about 31, of Cherry Grove, died
at home; was born August 22, 1867 near Elliston Station; lived all his life
in Grant County except for a short time in the west; in 1890 he married Miss
Nora YELTON, also of Grant; they had two children; funeral was Sunday at
Clarks Creek Church and he was buried in the church
yard.
