home of her son, C. W. BURTON, near Mt. Zion, Monday, January 9, 1905; was
buried at Mt. Zion yesterday.
Thomas
[Tom] Hendrix VIOLETTE, who was badly injured by a freight train on Monday
of last week, January 2, 1905, died from that accident Sunday at his mother's
High Street home; was 16 last May 21; was second son and third child of Dr.
J. D. VIOLETTE; survived by his widowed mother, brother, and sisters, and
aged grandmother; was buried beside his father in Williamstown Cemetery;
was in 8th grade here and member of the football team; six of whom were
pallbearers.

Death notice of the mother
of Mrs. R. H. ELLISTON from last wee's Bracken County Review (Brooksville,
Kentucky): Mrs. Clara J. WILLIS died January 19, 1905 at the Brooksville
home of her son, Dr. Harry WILLIS, twenty years after the death [in 1884]
of her husband, Judge Benjamin G. WILLIS, who she married January 29, 1845;
she was the daughter of Gen. John PAYNE and was born in Augusta, Kentucky,
January 12, 1825; a woman of superior intellect, refined by culture and Christian
character; was Methodist for over sixty years; was buried beside her husband
at the old PAYNE Cemetery at Augusta; all children present for funeral except
youngest son, George.
An
attempt at suicide by Arch GRUBBS, a prosperous farmer near New Eagle Mills
one day last week, failed. He slashed his throat three times from side to
side; no explanation; is better.

Claude PAYTON, a prominent lawyer of Sylvester, Georgia, married the beautiful
daughter of O. N. GREGG [some time ago], but she died while they lived near
Barnesville, Georgia, with her husband and two children
surviving.

file a suit to be paid (which he

Mrs.
Mary Hume BURLEY, the oldest colored person in Grant County, died at her
Williamstown home Saturday, February 18, 1905; known to be at least 101 and
may have been older than that; "Gove." CLARK, who is past 92, remembers she
was a grown young woman when he was a
boy.

News: Chester SIMPSON, a Cincy street car conductor, returned home after
attending the funeral of his grandmother, Mrs.
WOODYARD.

E. J. MITTS, who lived in this area for 35 years moved to

wife of J. G. BLACKBURN, cashier of the Independence Deposit Bank, died at
her home suddenly Tuesday shortly after arising quickly to answer the telephone;
was a sister of the grocer, B. S. FRANKS; funeral will be this Thursday at
the Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

SEBREE and Edna WILLIAMS, of Mason, surprised their friends by being married
at Covington last Thursday, February 16, by R. U. V. W. DARLINGTON of the
Scott St. Methodist Church.

Miss Lucille CLARK left for an extended visit to her cousin, Miss Mamie HALE

The remains of Mrs. Anna YEAKLEY, daughter of Mrs. Greenberry READNOUR of
near Cherry Grove, who died at the home of her mother about two weeks ago,
and which were shipped to her Philadelphia home Sunday, February 12, reached
here and were buried beside her husband, who had been dead only a few months.

ROBINSON, about 70 and one of the cleverest colored men in Williamstown,
died Sunday at his Cynthiana Street home; was one of a very few of his race
here who owned a home of his own; always conducted himself in such a way
as to hold the confidence and esteem of all; funeral by Rev. J. D. REDD.

Ridge News: Mrs. Sarah CLARK died at the home of her son Wm. M. CLARK last
week, and was buried at Williamstown; was about 80 and a good Christian woman;
her daughter, Mrs. Ruth TOMLIN of Cincy, was here for her funeral.

on his farm near here, after a year in Bellefontain,
Ohio.

Kate BRUMBACK, wife of Frank BRUMBACK, died at her home on the Falmouth Pike,
just east of Williamstown, Friday, February 17, 1905; burial was Saturday
at Williamstown Cemetery, beside other of her children that had died; almost
an invalid for many years with lung trouble; member of Williamstown Baptist
Church for twenty years; daughter of Oliver P. and Nancy (BARKER) INGRAM,
deceased, was born near Walton, Boone County, Kentucky, March 5, 1843, being
one of ten children; seven boys and three girls; was married to Frank BRUMBACK
of near Gardnersville, Kentucky in 1865, and they had ten children; husband
and four children survive: Ellie, Thomas, and Edward of Williamstown, and
Mrs. Robt. BEARD of Hamilton, Ohio.

and Stewartsville, lost two noble Christian women within 48 hours of each
other, who had been neighbors and friends all their lives; first to go was
Aunt Polly HARRISON, near Heekin, who was a daughter of Phillip GAUGH and
widow of Uncle Jack HARRISON, dead for twenty years of more; she had just
passed her 82nd birthday; her funeral and burial was at/near her Salem Church;
Mrs. Sarah FLEGE, past 79 and wife of J. F. FLEGE, soon died later; was a
daughter of Barnett WOODYARD, long since dead, and a Christian Church member;
buried Sunday in Williamstown Cemetery; "no better or worthier women ever
lived or died in Grant, that these two grandmothers, in Israel, and they
each, though dead, live on in the useful and worthy lives of their numerous
descendants."

was the daughter of Phillip GAUGH; she married when she was seventeen and
mothered twelve children, seven of whom survive: five sons - P. G., W. P.,
Burwell N., Wesley T., and C. L. and two daughters - Mrs. F. M. ECKLER and
Mrs. Rev. W. H. H. DITZLER; her husband died more than twenty years ago.

died. She was born November 11, 1825; joined Christian Church at 18; on October
18, 1853, she married John F. FLEGE who is 81 now; they had severn children,
two boys and five girls, four of whom are dead; the three who survive are
Mrs. W. M. SIMPSON, Mrs. marion COLEMAN, and John M. FLEGE, who is known
best in Grant County for his labor in Sunday School work; Sarah was 79 years,
3 months, and 23 days old; her last words were: "Nearer my God to Thee. Meet

his life was full of adventure and last survivor of the Lopez expedition;
in 1861 was member of State Railroad Guards under Col. Jasper HUME; in 1862-3
joined Co. K, 4 KY Vol. Inf. under Col. Speed S. FRY; in 1864 re-enlisted
in Co. K, 4th KY Mounted Inf under Col. J. B. CROXTON; discharge for disability,
came home, re-enlisted in 53rd KY Mounted Inf. under Col. McGIBBEN to end
of war; was in battle of Cynthiana, Stone River, Kenesaw Mt., Atlanta, Jonesboro,
Corinth, Chickamauga, Chattanooga, and was in Sherman's famous march to the
sea [Savannah, Georgia]; lived in Williamstown for over 50 years; often visited
his cousin, Mrs. Elizabeth PECK; Harry HARRISON to whom he was fondly attached,
brought his remains to Williamstown

SIMS, bachelor son of Tom SIMS who lived on the Greenville Pike, East of
Dry Ridge, and Mrs. Sarah RACE, who lived on the same road; both were taken

Revolutionary fame; was a Confederate and Gov. of Virginia.

two sons, John and Millard CARTER, of Williamstown, and one daughter, Mrs.

In Memory of Geo. H. NORTON, one of God's noblemen and an old fashioned Kentucky
gentleman; was for many years Grant County surveyor; was born October 16,
1825 and died June 4, 1905, having lived 79 years, 7 months, and 18 days;
on November 19, 1850 he married Elizabeth HUTCHINSON, to whom four children
were born; Eliz. died January 12, 1873; then he married Fannie THOMAS, August
18, 1874, to whom two sons were born; all children are devoted to him and
the two youngest sons are devoted to the care of their parents; he lived
for nearly 50 years in the home where he died; he joined the M. E. South

Wednesday, June 14, 1905, at Crecelius, Meade County, Kentucky, about 15
miles below Brandenburg, on the Ohio River, Misses hallie, Mattie, and Fannie
BOOTH, daughters of Dr. Galt W. BOOTH were drowned while wading in a well-known
sand bar with a boy cousin, 12 or 13, and their younger sister, Lucy, 11;
they were nieces of this Editor [Tim Needman?], the daughters of the next

Death
and Burial of Baby Newton CRAM in faraway Songdo, Korea, written for the
Korea Methodist by Miss Ellasue C. WANER; parents were Mr. and Mrs.
W. G. CRAM; baby lived 17 months and 17 days; died 30 hours after noon of
Tuesday, March 21, 1905; Koreans do not have coffins, so friends made the
casket; was buried on the slopes of the beautiful Han
River.
There
was a quiet, merry marriage of deaf mutes at the home of S. M. BILLITER and
wife, Wednesday, June 21, 1905, between Miss Mary Emma HARVEY and W. H. KILGOUR,
of Cincinnati; the bride has been with SPARKS-BILLITER family for more than
20 years.

ago from paralysis; was a staunch Republican; charter member of the Williamstown
Lodge, Knights of Pythias; buried at Williamstown Cemetery Tuesday after

MARKSBERRY, 27, of Crescent Springs, Kentucky, a Cincinnati Southern Railway tower man near Lagoon Park, was pulled beneath a train Thursday and died from injuries at the Good Samaritan Hospital the same day; was a well remembered Grant County boy; the son of Rev. Thos. MARKSBERRY and a Miss SHIPP, a distant relative of Alvin LOWE.

Rest: Lula, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Milton LAWRENCE was born in Grant County,
June 29, 1879; October 25, 1899 she married Carl CHILES to whom were fathered
two children, little Emmet and Viola; they moved to Hamilton, Ohio March
5, 1904; took ill 10 weeks ago and died July 12, 1905; leaves behind parents,
four sisters, and three brothers, of whom one sister and two brothers have
died; at 14 she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined the Church
of Christ at Mt. Pleasant, Kentucky; she often said, "I have no fear of death.";
one sister named Lizzie; verse follows, signed, Wesley HATCHER, minister,
High Street Church of Christ, Hamilton, Ohio.
The
last man killed in the Civil War was George CALDWELL of Logan County, Kentucky,
a member of the [Confederate] Orphan Brigade which was fighting near Statesburg,
South Carolina on April 29, 1865; he was a private in the 9th KY Infantry,
commanded by Col. John W. Caldwell. --Confederate
Veteran.

San Diego, California paper reported that on Sunday, July 30, 1905, Jacob
[Jake] W. MOUNT, a former prosperous merchant of Williamstown, Kentucky committed
suicide at his home by shooting himself with a revolver in the abdomen (while
his wife was at church); came to California for his health and was suffering
from an attack of indigestion; left a note and he had gone through his papers
drawing checks payable to his wife.

wife of John G. CARLISLE of Kentucky, ex-Speaker, Senator, and former Secretary
of the Treasury, died Friday, August 4, 1905, at their summer home at Babylon,
Long Island; would have been 70 on the 29th of August, 7 days older than
her husband who was at her bedside with her daughter-in-law, Mrs. W. K. CARLISLE
and two granddaughters, jane and Laura CARLISLE; will be buried in October

HAGGARD, died at the home of her parents near Williamstown, Thursday, August
3, 1905, and her remains were taken to Mt. Pisgah [Methodist Church] for
burial. Her death was a sad blow to the devoted family, but they are comforted
in the thought that "of such is the kingdon of heaven," and that when life
ends with them they will meet the little on
again.

County Bar Resolutions on the death of Capt. John CARNES who was born in
Tuscarawas County, Ohio, October 9, 1829; joined Bar in 1872 and practiced
until 5 years before his death, making him the oldest practicing lawyer in
Grant County, lived in Grant County from 1846 to 1901 when he moved to Oklahoma
City; died at Emporia, Kansas, July 31, 1905, while visiting his
daughter.

brother-in-law, Bruce FRANKS; couple will live with groom's parents on Falmouth

Last Thursday, James SNOW of Stewartsville was injured in a steam thresher
and was carried to the house of John GAUGH; he died there Monday.

Mrs. N. M. SMITH of Stewartsville and her son, Vernon, returned from visiting
her daughter, Mrs. C. A. CAWLEY at Greencastle, Indiana.

Kentucky, August 23, 1905. George SMITH and his son, James D. SMITH, of Elmville,
were shot and killed while they worked in their field by neighbor, Cal NEWTON,
a teacher; both had large families; George was a Union soldier.

after 16 days of illness; Georgie was 8 years, 3 months, and 5 days old;

Adam LEWIS, 60, the Negro giant of Bourbon County is dead; weighed nearly
400 pounds and was 6 feet 3 inches tall; coffin had to be made in Cincy;
has daughter who lived with him and weighed over 300
pounds..
Correction:
Two weeks ago we reported a child born to the wife of Marion SAYERS. It should
have been Marion SORREL.

of James CORRIGAN who was born in Ireland, May 10, 1846 and came to America
in 1866, settling in Cincinnati as a stone mason for a few years; when the
Downingsville bridge across Eagle Creek was erected in 1881 he did the stone
work and remained to live in Williamstown ever since; many walls and foundations
in Williamstown were made by him; he was a Catholic and like most Irishmen,
a Democrat; last Thursday, August 24, 1905 he was found dead in his bed at
the Southern Hotel in Georgetown where he was working; had ever married and
leaves a brother in Cynthiana and a sister in Louisville that he visited
often.

BYRD.
Elliston
News: James K. POLK and Miss Icie WEBSTER were married at Mt. Zion last
Wednesday.
