Clarks Creek Baptist Church

The Clarks Creek Baptist Church was organized on December 19, 1846 by Elders David Lillard, Joseph Crouch and P. H. Todd, assisted by messengers from the churches at Ten Mile, Mt. Zion, Mussel Shoals and Dry Ridge. The charter members were Elizabeth Kuhn, B. F. Green, Nathan Hendrix, Sabra Hendrix, Jackson Bass, James Webster, Meshack Webster, J. M. Arnold, John W. Evans, Elizabeth Hatton, G. S. Gravit, Jane Webster and James Webster. The first minister was Elder P. H. Todd. The church affiliated with the Ten Mile Association in 1847. J. W. Evans was elected deacon.

On June 17, 1847, A. J. Kuhn gave an acre on or near Clarks Creek on which to build a meeting house to the church's trustees, B. F. Green, Mason Hendrix and Jacob Kuhn. Records indicate that the church left this site in 1872 to rebuild at the present location on land given by Bela Swinford. Over the years this original building has been remodeled and Sunday School rooms have been added.

Available records reveal that Elder W. J. Green was ordained as a minister in 1868 and William McMillan and Lewis Theobald were licensed to preach in 1876. Montana Carter McCormick played the organ here about 1900. The 1901 souvenir edition of The Williamstown Courier reported that the church had a membership of 198.

The Clarks Creek Baptist Church has a well-kept fenced cemetery on one side of its white frame building. A short walk through the pretty cemetery reveals some stones spanning 81 years (1874-1955). No inventory of stones in this cemetery has been published to date.
