Corinth Baptist Church

The Corinth Baptist Church was organized July 4, 1878 by C. H. McDowell who had been sent for that purpose by the Elkhorn Association. In organizing the church he was assisted by sister churches: Williamstown, Georgetown, Covington, Friendship, Carrollton, Pleasant Grove and Shiloh. The first clerk was James A. Estes. There were twenty-six charter members. In December 1892 the treasurer reported $53.35 had been collected of the $67.50 subscribed and this has been paid to Pastor J. W. Waldrop as his salary.

The lot for the church building was purchased from George W. Henry for $175. Mr. Henry donated $75 of this amount. While the church building was under construction, the group met in the Methodist Church. The first service in the new building was held September 1, 1895, with the dedication service October 20, 1895. The speaker for the dedication service was Professor J. J. Rucker, Georgetown College.

In May 1895, the church agreed to pay the pastor $100 per year in addition to an amount donated by the Elkhorn Mission Board. In June 1915, Bradley Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Jones of Corinth, became the pastor of his hometown church. During his ministry the church voted to have two services each month instead of the usual one service. In 1917 Bradley Jones, who received both his A.B. degree and Doctor of Divinity degree from Georgetown College, resigned from the work at Corinth to work in other fields. Mr. Jones, the author of several books, also served three years as missionary to the Phillippines, and for many years as chairman of the Bible Department at Carson Newman College, Jefferson City, Tennessee.

The present building was erected and dedicated in 1959. The dedicatory address was given by Dr. Charles R. Daley, editor of the Western Recorder.
