Ralph Coghill or Cowgill, while living in Virginia, enlisted at Petersburg, served as private in Captain Harrison's Company of Virginia Infantry, and while aiding in the building of a fort, had his back badly injured. He was placed in charge of a team and was engaged in the Siege of Ninety-Six and the Siege of Yorktown. The dates of his enlistment and discharge from service are not shown; he served about two years.
The soldier was allowed pension on his application executed March 18, 1832, at which time he resided in Anderson County, Kentucky; his nearest post office then Lawrenceburg, Kentucky; in April 1832, he lived in Spencer County, Kentucky.
Ralph Coghill (as his name was then recorded) married January 30, 1821, Polly (Mary) Poindexter of Franklin County, Kentucky, where the wedding took place. He died November 9, 1835 in Anderson County, Kentucky, the age of the soldier is not shown.
Mary (Polly) Cowgill, or Coghill, the soldier's widow was allowed pension on her application executed April 12, 1853. She was then a resident of Camdenville, Anderson County, Kentucky, aged 55 years. The date and place of her birth and names of her parents are not shown.
There is no reference to children of the soldier, Ralph Cowgill, in this claim. In 1837, reference was made to one, Robert Poindexter, but his residence or relationship to the family were not stated.
