HENRY CHILDRES and Mary his wife of Grant County to SIMON NICHOLAS, ROBERT CHILDRES SR and WILLIAM CHILDRES, trustees of the Dry Ridge Meeting House in Grant County for $2 - land in Grant County, being part of a tract on which the said Henry and his wife now live and whereon the meeting house now stands, beginning at a stone corner to ROBERT CHILDRES and said Henry's line....consisting of 96 poles....the said lot is also intended for the purpose of erecting if required, a public school house. 13 July 1820.
Revolutionary War Veteran: JOSEPH SPENCER aged 76 years, a resident of Grant County swears on oath that he served in the Revolutionary War. In September 1775 he was appointed in a minute battalion commanded by Collo. L. TALIFRAW. In 1776 he was appointed Capt. by Collo. WILLIAM DANGERFIELD in the Virginia Line. He made an original declaration on 13 February 1819 and was granted a pension certificate #60. He states that he was a resident citizen of the U.S. on 18 March 1818 and since then he has not disposed of any of his property with the intent to diminish it. His schedule of property includes 125 acres of land, 2 old Negroes, 2 old mares, and one colt, some cattle and hogs. He is a farmer but "very informed and totally incapable to pursue it". He has in his family a wife, SARAH SPENCER, aged 74 years who is infirm and unable to support herself. Also JOSEPH D. SPENCER aged 47 years who is not able to support himself in consequence of injuries sustained on a campaign under General WAYNE and in the late war under Gen'l HARRISON. Also living with him are Joseph and Milly - two slaves both old and inform. Statement given 21 August 1820. Recorded: 21 August 1820.
Revolutionary War Veteran: WILLIAM WHATON aged 73 years on March 1 last, of Grant County, he served in the Revolutionary War, he enlisted on September 1, 1774 for three years in the company of Capt. SAMUEL MILLER attached to the 8th Penn. Reg't commanded by Col. McCOY in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. "He was in the battles on the western waters the place where he enlisted to serve at in 1777 then commanded by Captains BRADY and CLARKE on scouting parties on said waters....the western waters being headquarters for Col McCOY's army at that time." On April 21, 1819 he was issued pension certificate #9563. He was a resident of the U.S. on March 18, 1818 and he has not since then disposed of any of his property. His property schedule includes one horse and one note. He is also indebted to various person for $44. He is a weaver by very infirm and totally incapable to pursue it. He has living with him his granddaughter, AGNES NILN(?) aged 16 years, very weakly. 21 August 1820. Recorded: 24 August 1820.
Revolutionary War Veteran: JOHN
LAWLESS aged 70 years next March 11, resident of Grant County swears that
he served in the American Revolution. He enlisted in the regular service
on August 10, 1776 for the term of 3 years in the Company of Capt. WILLIAM
BLACKWELL attached to the 11th Virginia Regiment, commanded by Collo. MORGAN
in Fauquair (sic) County, Virginia. He was in the battle of Brandywine on
September 11, 1779 and at the battle of Germantown at that time under the
command of Capt. JOHN MARSHALL. He was then sent to Virginia with a detachment
as baggage guard with plunder taken from General BURGOINE (sic) under the
command of Capt. BUFORD. He was then put under the command of Capt. HOGG,
commanded by Collo. PARKER and sent to the State of Georgia where he served
his time out and was discharged on August 10, 1779 at a widow STARKS'es about
9 miles from Augusta, between Augusta and Savannah, that place being the
headquarters for COLLO. PARKER's army at that time. He was issued a pension
certificate on February 15, 1819 - for $46. He was a citizen of the U.S.
on March 18, 1818 and he has not disposed of any of his property. His schedule
of property includes one horse, household items, farming tools, sheep, hogs
and two cows. He is a farmer but is totally incapable to pursue it. His wife
is living with him - POLLY LAWLESS - aged 66 years. She is very inform and
totally incapable of supporting herself.
