Drafted Men

The drawing of the numbers of men who are registered for military service was made in Washington last Friday. The drawing was not finished until 3 a.m. Saturday morning. Grant County's quota is seventy-one, and a list of the first one hundred and forty-two, one-hundred per cent more than the required number is published herewith. In making the drawing Grant County is given credit for eighteen men who have enlisted and who were registered. This places Grant's total quota at eighty-nine. As soon as the official result of the drawing is announced from Washington, the men whose number appear in the draft will be called before the local boards of exemptions. One-third of the list will be called the first day and so on until the list is made up of those who will serve their country as soldiers in the war.

If the list of 142 names is exhausted before the required number is secured, the next in the order drawn will be called before the board until the entire list is filled. It is expected that the 142 numbers drawn out first will be sufficient. Exemptions will be made on the grounds of physical disabilities, men with families who are solely dependent upon them for support. Those who claim exemptions on the ground of having dependents will be required to make an affidavit and heavy penalties are prescribed for false statements.

The local board of exemptions is composed of Sheriff W. P. Williams, County Clerk H. W. Webb, and examining physician, Dr. A. V. Menefee. The decision of the examining physician will not be final as the drafted man will be passed on to another physician who will examine him. Who this second physician will be has not been made known as this is written. While it is not yet known how deeply exemptions will cut into the list, it is quite probable that nearly all married men who have families in this county will claim exemptions, as few of them are in financial condition which would keep their families without their support. The men below will be examined before the draft board.
