David T. Franks

Readers of the Courier will remember that one day in the early part of the year that Dave T. Franks was shot and killed in the Blind Tiger in the town of Crittenden by Harve Sanders. An inquest was held over the body of Franks and a writ issued for Sanders charging him with the crime of murder. However before the writ could be issued Sanders disappeared. Later the Grand Jury indicted him for murder and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest and still he could not be found.

A few days ago the Grant County Fiscal Court learned that Sanders was hiding in the Mountains of Bath County, Kentucky and that he could be brought to Williamstown for the sum of $25. This expenditure was authorized by the court and last Saturday Harve Sanders was brought to Williamstown by a constable of Bath County. He was lodged in jail and there he will remain until the next term of the Grant Circuit Court, which convenes on the first Monday in Next February. Under the indictment he is not entitled to bail and can give none until a preliminary hearing is given him.

The killing is shrouded in considerable mystery as no one was immediately present when when it was done except the dead man and his slayer. However, Mrs. Sanders made a statement or two to other parties after the killing as to how it occurred that may now throw considerable light upon the tragedy.

As reported in the November 3, 1898 issue of the Williamstown Courier .
