Grassy Run Baptist Church

The United Baptist Church of Christ at Grassy Run was constituted on November 23, 1849. There were visiting ministers and lay members from Mussel Shoals, Crooked Creek, Clarks Creek, Dry Ridge, and Williamstown. There were six members at this time. Brother Elisha Cobb was called as the first pastor. He served until his death in 1854. The membership continued to grow. In December 1851, Sister Martha Ann, "A Woman of Culler" was received into the fellowship of the church.

The first time there was any mention of money was October 1854, when a housekeeper was hired for one year for $6 to be paid at the end of the year. The salary was raised to $10 in October 1857, but by 1878 was $6 again. December 1883, the church voted to "let the house out" to the lowest bidder for twelve months to be kept in good order. Ten dollars was the low bid.

The first treasurer was elected in February 1857. He asked to be "releast from the office" at the April meeting. The vacancy was filled by another Brother. In 1881, the pastor received $6.75 as compensation. In 1882, he received $1.50. In 1893, the pastor agreed to serve the church for %56.25. In September 1857, the church voted to have a pulpit built in the meeting house.

The church voted to send five brothers to help organize a Baptist Church at Mason, Grant County, in December 1883.

Until 1891, the church had been a member of Ten Mile Association. July 1891, they voted to ask Ten Mile for a letter to unite with Crittenden Association.

The first record of mission work was March 1887, when a "commity" was appointed to raise money for missionary work and the pastor requested to preach a sermon on missions on the fourth Sunday in June, In November 1887, the church sent 200 pounds of flour to the orphans' home in Louisville. In October 1889, 50 cents was collected for foreign missions.

In May 1893, a "commity" was appointed to raise $100 to help build the turnpike from near here to old Lexington Pike. Later the church took the job of building it. April 1907, "the church granted Mt. Olivet Christian Church the privilege of worshiping in our house while they were building."

A new church building was erected opposite the old building and dedicated in June 1917. This building is still in use today. In 1962, an addition and a full basement were constructed. Most of the work was done by members and well wishers. The debt was cleared in 1966.
