On December 17, 1757, John Graves was born in Louisa County, Virginia. The names of his parents are not mentioned. The veteran married Lydia (maiden name not given) on December 23, 1784 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. She was born on October 2, 1796, place not mentioned. Their children were: Nancy born August 5, 1786, Betsey born April 23, 1789, Salley born October 11, 1790, William born on April 27, 1792, Asa born on November 7, 1793, Zachariah, born July 11, 1795, John born April 22, 1798, Nicholess born July 11, 1799, Lysay born December 11, year not clear, Polly born May 8, 1801, and Jefferson born August 1803. In 1844 John was living in Fayette County, Kentucky and in 1855 Jefferson was living in Scott County, Kentucky.

During the Revolutionary War the veteran lived in Spotsylvania and Orange Counties, Virginia. In 1832 he was living in Fayette County, Kentucky. At that time he stated he had lived in Kentucky 43 or 44 years. On October 31, 1843 he died in Fayette County.

When the veteran applied for pension it was stated that he enlisted in 1776 and served six months as Private with the Virginia Troops under Captain Craig. It was likewise stated that thereafter he served two months under Captain Lindsay, that he was at the Siege of Yorktown and that thereafter he served under Major Divall and guarded prisoners to Wincheste.r Definite dates of service were not given.

John Graves was pensioned on Certificate 4192, which was issued under the Act of June 7, 1832. Pension was paid at the Kentucky Agency. Lydia Graves, widow of John Graves, was pensioned on Certificate 3114, which was issued under the Act of February 3, 1848. Pension was paid at the Kentucky Agency.

Warrant #26574 for 160 acres of bounty land was issued under the Act of March 3, 1855 to Lydia Graves, widow of John Graves, on account of his Revolutionary War service.
