James Harris was born in 1752 in Buckingham County, Virginia. He married Patte or Pattie (maiden name not stated) on May 10, 1775 in Buckingham County, Virginia. The names of her parents and the date of her birth are not given. She was residing in Floyd County, Kentucky in 1839 and was 84 years of age at that time. They had 11 children. In 1839 reference was made to the following children: Lucy, the oldest, 65 years of age; Sally, 63 years of age; Fanny, 61 years of age; and Samuel, the tenth child, was 45 years of age and lived in Floyd County, Kentucky. The names of the other children are not mentioned.
At the time of his enlistment the veteran was a resident of Buckingham County, Virginia. He stated that he resided there many years after the Revolutionary War then moved to Floyd County, Kentucky. His death was October 3, 1836, but place not stated.
When the veteran applied for pension he stated that he enlisted on September 2, 1777, and served at various times until the surrender of Cornwallis, amounting to 31 months, as Private with the Virginia Troops under Captains William Johns, William Anderson, Charles Patterson and Silas Watkins and Colonels May, William Fleming and Jones. He likewise stated that he was in the battles at the Dismal Swamp and Points of Forks and in the siege of Yorktown.
James Harris was pensioned on Certificate 13986, which was issued under the Act of June 7, 1832. The pension was paid at the Kentucky Agency. Patte Harris, the veteran's widow, was pensioned on Certificate 3119, which was issued under the Act of July 4, 1836. The pension was paid at the Kentucky Agency.
